  4. I was asked to make this for a memory by a friend, his dad passed away in March, he was a train enthusiast & was a member of the RRRR club locally, this is a HO train club where they get together every Sunday. Made from red oak, 4 coats of clear Deft. Comments as always. Thank You

  7. So my lion is finished. How and what do I attach as hardware to the back to be able to hang it and what do I use for attaching it to the wall? What is sturdy enough to hold so much wood both in the frame and on the wall? I have no clue and welcome any advice your generous hive mind might have!

    3 Boxes

I'd normally use my CNC router for stuff like this, but it was tied up with another project. I wanted to try a new (for me) hinge, experiment with different wood combinations, and spray lacquer from a gun for the first time. Erik = Santos Mahogany with Figured Eucalyptus inlay. I learned from this one that it looks better when the figure is on the box and the letters are plainer. Sherry = Bubinga with Guatambu inlay. I like Bubinga, thought I had some yellowheart scraps for the letters but couldn't find it. Edward = Low figured Leopardwood with Wenge inlay. The blade went a bit wonky on the final d. Both nice woods, but next time I'd brush on a 2nd or 3rd coat of sealer before spraying because the pores are very open. All approx 5W x 9L x 2.25H.

  10. Good morning Frank. Being 71 years old I remember well the old 78's, can't remember what I did yesterday though.. The old 78's Were made with shellac and very brittle, not to mention a bit thicker. Would they not splinter along the cut??. Just a thought. Anyway Frank, you keep going with the vinyl as you turn out some stunning work with them. Take care. Rob Roy.

    HAWK BM20 help

I agree w/jt, doug. No matter what we offered up as experienced Hawk owners for help, you were argumentative & your comments about the saw got worse. You'll find there are all levels of scrollers here. Some with the "look what followed me home from the big box store, now what do I do" syndrome, some who can't read the owner's manual before flippin' the power switch, others of us that been at this 25 years or more & can make a saw do most anything we need it to do, regardless of the color. You'll also find that when you come here with an issue, we're more than willing to help you in one way or another. Whether you choose to take that advice is up to you. I, like JT, have several saws, & have worn out a few. And am on my second Hawk. And am well acquainted with them, & the team @ Bushton where they are built. You can learn alot from a scroll saw if you allow it to teach you. First being patience. Easy does it & try not fly off the handle when things don't go just right. Learn to listen, then put the noise to use.

    Fretwork Tray

Fretwork tray designed by Steve Good cut from some rimu tongue and groove from the back of an old wardrobe and a piece of drawer side for the base. One coat of 50/50 BLO and mineral turpentine. I will give it a coat of beeswax once it is fully dry. This was fun to cut and I was able to stack cut the sides and ends which saved time. Rob

  14. Last week we watched an episode of 'Have Gun - Will Travel' in which Quanah Parker was a character. I knew he wasn't fictional, so I looked him up. I just had to do this portrait. The pattern is by Gary Browning and found in his book, "Wild West Scroll Saw Portraits". I enlarged the pattern by 65% to fit an 11" x 14" frame. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and backed with a black mat board. In framing, I used Acrylite, a framing quality plastic. The blades used were FD New Spiral #1 and there are two coats of spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

  15. CA or Super Glue Is a very durable finish for pens that will be used on a daily basis.About 10 -15 coats running on the lathe Sand from about 400 grit to around 2000 or higher.Plastic polish and it looks like glass. But I still prefer a Friction polish finish It just feels better. But higher Maintenance. The friction polish is preferred by collectors.

  16. Normally I use Western Red Cedar for outdoor work. I finish it with several light coats of Spar. I always tell me customers that in 2 years they will need to clean it and respray it for added protection. Keep in mind when mounting you need to use something like deck screws that are outdoor rated. Hope this helps.

  29. I have not yet cut a pre 1950 record only because I have not had one I understand they are made from a completely different material and are brittle I would love to try one and keep looking for them I do have a new contact who gets donations of lots of older style records hopefully he will get some if so I will cut and let you know or if you try before me let me know please , I think it will just be a case of finding the right blade at the right speed to not smash it apart or melt it back in as you cut never know someone may read this thread and has already tried it I cannot be the only strange one to keep cutting vinyl lol

  34. Okay this is a lighter duty one.. it's the triangle shaped one and only have one mounting hole.. the ones I use are more of a D shape and have two holes for mounting the hanger to the project.. very heavy duty.. probably overkill really but I'd rather know it's not going to fall and smash into several pieces that take a chance. http://cherrytreetoys.com/brass-d-ring-hangers/

    More Practice Puzzles

  41. DW, I'll play devils advocate here... actually I have found that people need to touch them, feel them and realize they're puzzles to truly appreciate them. I've had some in stores and of course had to shrink wrap them and they don't sell nearly as well. I keep all 120 of mine on display in their natural state when I'm at an event. When a purchase is made, I shrink wrap it for them on the spot for easier transporting. And of course the 200 duplicates I have with me behind the tables are all shrink wrapped in advance.
