New Toy
Roberta Moreton and 6 others reacted to CATRK for a topic
I've been using a Porter Cable saw for the last 2 years and thought it was cutting ok. The pieces generally turned out good even though I would go through a lot of blades. Well I've been saving the extra money I make selling a few pieces and today my dream arrived. It took about an hour to set up thanks to Steve Good's video. I didn't realize there would be that much difference in a saw, but boy was I wrong. I can't speak highly enough about it. I love my new Seyco. .7 points -

Dominos
125 CSL and 3 others reacted to Chunkthekid for a topic
Thanks to a thread someone posted about a domino pattern, I found the perfect gift to make for my father-in-law. They're whole family plays dominos every time they get together, so I knew he would get some good use out of them. I used 1/2" yellowheart and stack cut two at a time. I had some #7 Olson Skip Tooth blades that were too big for anything else I have cut and I didn't know what I would ever use them for, well now I know. They made quick work of the 1" thick cuts with very little burning. Used the saw to cut the divider line in each domino and burned the dots. He was very happy with them but I didn't allow him to take them home yet. I had a very busy weekend and wanted to get them done so we could play a game last night ( I won!) but I still want to put a coat of poly gel on them to really make the yellow pop. I will post another picture when that part is complete.4 points -
Decorative Basket #5
125 CSL and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Last Monday, I ordered a basket pattern set from Scroller. I never ordered from them before, because they don't seem to give the designers credit. The patterns came in the mail yesterday and I had to make one. I made this small basket without the lid. It measures approximately 5" x 5 1/2" x 3" high. I used 1/2" Hard Maple, FD UR #1 blades, and finished with spray Shellac. I ordered some 3/8" stock to make some of the large baskets. Comments welcome.3 points -
Bookends
MTCowpoke22 and 2 others reacted to RangerJay for a topic
Here are a pair of bookends I just finished up for a Charity Fundraiser Golf Tournament in September. It is the 2nd Annual Presidents Golf Tourney and Auction put on by the Canadian Hearing Society to raise scholarship funds intended to support Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students in their post-secondary schooling. The burl is Red Mali (Australia), the backing is Red Elm, and the base is Walnut.. The patterns are re-purposed from from Sue Mey clock patterns. The burl was a bit of a challenge - I had originally wanted it to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of an inch thick - didn't take me long to figure out that wasn't going to happen - I did try an experiment at 1/2 inch and was steadily breaking drill bits and blades - so finally settled on 1/4 inch - which went OK - but still broke a couple of drill bits. Anyway, I'm reasonably pleased with how it turned out - the grain of the burl is stunning (the pictures do not do it justice) - but I think I would do a little more pondering on how best to cut the golf shaft - and pretty sure I'd do it a little differently ..... Comments welcome, Jay3 points -

From what Kevin has said about his meds and problems, perhaps alcohol should be avoided.2 points -
Thickness
NC Scroller reacted to CharleyL for a topic
Are you sure? A human hair is about 0.0035 inches". Most aluminum foil is about 0.005 inches". Go here for an inch to millimeter chart .http://www.hotwatt.com/inchto.htm 0005mm is incredibly small, much smaller than a human hair. Are you certain that you need something that small? It will almost be transparent. Charley1 point -

I am going to say this again. You need a good pain management doctor who can find a combination of things to make you feel better and still be functional. He can also help with the side effects. How do I know this...I saw my pain management doctor yesterday and see him once a month.1 point -

Congratulations on the new saw. I know what I went through going from a PC to an Excalibur. It was like a breath of fresh air :).1 point -

Keven, I also had to make her a sturdy non-slip step to take with in the car. It's only 3 1/2 in. But it gets her high enough to sit and then pivot into her seat.1 point

The Dragon is ALIVE and walking!! And as usually happens on projects like this, it worked great for the video, but now I get to spend a fair bit of time tweaking the gear train to get it to walk smoothly and consistently. I need to get some thin CyA glue to strengthen the threads in the gears so they they don't strip around the set screws. Thanks for looking folks. VID_20170610_105457224.mp41 point

Looks good! You might consider putting a handrail on the wall side. Then if she gets tired or starts to slip she can lean into the wall, not over a railing, and when she gets up to the door it's easy to hold on to with the right while turning the doorknob with the left.1 point
