    Bookends

Here are a pair of bookends I just finished up for a Charity Fundraiser Golf Tournament in September. It is the 2nd Annual Presidents Golf Tourney and Auction put on by the Canadian Hearing Society to raise scholarship funds intended to support Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students in their post-secondary schooling. The burl is Red Mali (Australia), the backing is Red Elm, and the base is Walnut.. The patterns are re-purposed from from Sue Mey clock patterns. The burl was a bit of a challenge - I had originally wanted it to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of an inch thick - didn't take me long to figure out that wasn't going to happen - I did try an experiment at 1/2 inch and was steadily breaking drill bits and blades - so finally settled on 1/4 inch - which went OK - but still broke a couple of drill bits. Anyway, I'm reasonably pleased with how it turned out - the grain of the burl is stunning (the pictures do not do it justice) - but I think I would do a little more pondering on how best to cut the golf shaft - and pretty sure I'd do it a little differently ..... Comments welcome, Jay

    Thanks Sue Mey

Sue Mey placed my "Nothing Scares me I am a school bus driver" in her email she sends out! This was quite a surprise an for such a great pattern maker to feel I did good enough to be included in her email.

  5. I found one of their patterns in the Spring 2009 Scrollsaw Woodworking Crafts Magazine. Here is the information posted at the end of the article.

  6. Last Monday, I ordered a basket pattern set from Scroller. I never ordered from them before, because they don't seem to give the designers credit. The patterns came in the mail yesterday and I had to make one. I made this small basket without the lid. It measures approximately 5" x 5 1/2" x 3" high. I used 1/2" Hard Maple, FD UR #1 blades, and finished with spray Shellac. I ordered some 3/8" stock to make some of the large baskets. Comments welcome.

    Things I finished.

Just finished these last week. both were fathers day presents. The car was a pattern by Travis. and the motorcycle is a Steve Good pattern that I just added the words to. I already have my next weeks projects ready to be cut so hopefully I will be posting more pictures of things. My co workers have been keeping me busy with things to make. Hope all the dads have a good day and have a great week.. Mimi

    Member Map

Howdy All. I brought back the Member Map. It's fun to see where everybody is. Who knows, there might be a scroller near you! Check it out. It takes data from your profile (the Location section) and puts it on the map. You can also update your location from the Member Map section. There's a button that says"My Location" where you can type in your city or zipcode (I wouldn't put your home address, though). Anyway, it's a fun section to look at. I'm bringing back features bit by bit and checking the impact on our server. I'll roll out other features soon enough too.

    Dominos

Thanks to a thread someone posted about a domino pattern, I found the perfect gift to make for my father-in-law. They're whole family plays dominos every time they get together, so I knew he would get some good use out of them. I used 1/2" yellowheart and stack cut two at a time. I had some #7 Olson Skip Tooth blades that were too big for anything else I have cut and I didn't know what I would ever use them for, well now I know. They made quick work of the 1" thick cuts with very little burning. Used the saw to cut the divider line in each domino and burned the dots. He was very happy with them but I didn't allow him to take them home yet. I had a very busy weekend and wanted to get them done so we could play a game last night ( I won!) but I still want to put a coat of poly gel on them to really make the yellow pop. I will post another picture when that part is complete.

    Scrolling concrete...

As far as lumber goes, lowes has always had a better quailty wood than home depot, and for maple the lowes around here don't sell maple. How are you doing are you on schelude for your puzzle cutting, RJ

  12. I may be wrong, but I suspect that what you have isn't actually poplar. Could it be that somehow some hard maple got mixed in with the poplar?

  13. I guess there's a chance these 2 boards I bought just happened to have a higher moisture content. I plan on buying more from Lowe's because the boards are nicer overall and cut to length so I'll see if they consistently seem denser and harder.

There are some oddities there too. I zoomed in to southern AZ and see there are 3 members from Dragoon. Dragoon is pretty little town in the middle of nowhere with an official population of just 209, (and I think they're counting roadrunners, rattlesnakes and other critters in that number.) I, on the other hand, thought I was south of Tucson AZ. But it appears that I am in Azerbaijan along with a dozen other members. I'd update it but the weather in southern AZ will top 100 again today, while in Azerbaijan it is a balmy 70 so I'll stick around for a bit.

  17. Thanks Dave. I used a tooth pick to carefully apply the glue, so no squeeze out.

  19. If the MultiMax is in good condition, yep would be my choice without a doubt. If the table seems small, there are always ways to add auxiliary table over it.

  20. WOW !! it's easy to see why people like your work, thanks for sharing.

  21. Delta and Dewalt, in my opinion your paying for the yellow paint, both are good saws new, if I were buying used the upper end saws can be had in good condition if you look around and I think there built better, cut better, last longer, and just as easy to repair.also what you intend to do makes a difference..hobby, work, as for size I would stay as close to 20 as I could but would not turn down a good 14..that's still over 2 foot cut to center. Well just thoughts. You seem to have the funds, if you don't rush you should end up happy

  22. Leshko, are there repair shops for any of those brands in Russia? You have a lot of good choices. I would take the Multicut 1 off you list. If you don't like a small table, you might remove the Multimax 18 as well. My personal opinion is that the Dewalt/Delta would be my choice if it were serviceable where you are because they are an absolute joy to use. If not, I would have to go with the Hegner as those are pretty solid, and you could work on those easy enough yourself. I had the plastic connection rod break on mine, and it was trivial to replace.

  23. Out of that selection I would go with the Hegner Multimax 18 if it is in good shape.

    Fred and Julie Byrne

Yea, I tried too, as a pair and individually. Rather disappointing as my google-fu is usually pretty strong. I didn't see much from the last few years but they are referenced in Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts from 7 years ago. Perhaps an email to their editor might provide a bit of info.

Monti, isn't there any contact info on the book you bought, that info is usually on the books. You could do a google search for them, something might show up on that search. Len

  30. Thanks Christian; I have all of Steve Goods patterns but I have not seen the book. I also haven't seen the video on YT so you really helped a lot.

  31. I am going to say this again. You need a good pain management doctor who can find a combination of things to make you feel better and still be functional. He can also help with the side effects. How do I know this...I saw my pain management doctor yesterday and see him once a month.

  32. I hate being constipated from the pills and try not to take them.i hurt so bad getting stoned on them won't happen because of the pain,Masks it.but definitely no more driving on them. i was lucky once.

  33. Look for a calendar with lots of cat images. Pick an image and glue to 1/4" Baltic Birch with 3M 77 spray adhesive. Coat with Krylon Triple Glaze. Glue a piece of 1/8" Baltic Birch for a backing. Then start cutting. That's all there are(sic) to it. bb
