  2. Rescued a table from the skip (dumpster) someone had painted it black well I say painted looked like they poured the tin of paint on it, no undercoat nothing luckily for me it peeled off like a face mask Result! . It was 1/2" thick so thought yea why not make some chunky puzzles from it see how they come out in thicker wood this is the result so far still got some wood left as it also had a shelf that I stripped easy peasy too that will also be more jigsaws as I have some more patterns from Iggy I wanna do as well, I cut the outer part of the puzzle with modified pegas #7 then went back to #3 for the rest, Done the Penguin as well and broke the beak of the baby at the last minute lol so I gave that one to the little fella next door he did not even notice and is at this moment in time painting it , oh had a spare piece of ply so done the chicken one too.

  4. Hallo! I wonder, do you know Masha and the Bear? Be sure to meet you! Moreover, these cartoons are in English and 34 other languages. Many cartoon series are freely available. In Russian, all parts of the cartoon are free. One of my favorites - №27 - "Oil painting". I used a poster, pasted on 1/4 birch plywood. The figurals of the puzzle are made in the form of cartoon characters. Size 12 * 7 "(30 * 17.5cm) 92 pieces, 11 figurals Smile with Masha! English video - 30 parts, but no free "Oil painting" Russian video - "Oil painting". I think it will be fun even without translation.

  6. I agree.I have used poplar in the past, found no knots, sands very easy, paint takes to it like a charm. The thinner wood BB ply unless you have a plainer.

  7. well brett, bein' you're going to paint it, I would suggest poplar. It's easy work with on the saw, sands easy, medium density wood, & takes paint better than hardwood. And clear of knots, where pine isn't. And it's fairly cheap, unless ya live here in NW Kansas. Then its more costly than oak, cherry, maple, or walnut.

  10. I want to scroll the project bellow. What would be the easiest wood to use. The widths of the wood used are 3/4" 1/2" 1/4" 1/8" 3/8" 3/16" I plan to paint the wood with acrylic and then spray it with clear polyurethane.

    Jet scroll saw

I do compound cutting quite often on mine. Have cut 1.5" material with no problem. Haven't had the need to go any thicker than that yet, but there looks to be a little more room under the upper clamp when I'm cutting at 1.5"

  15. Iggy, one more point on buying wood from a real lumber supplier and not a Lowes or HD type place. Most real suppliers have volume pricing. So if you buy 1-10 bf you pay one price per bf. You buy more then 10 but less then 50 bf you pay a cheaper price. More then 50 but less then 100 cheaper still. More then 100 but less then 200 chearper. It goes on. For example where I get mine it is $3.20 per bf for less then 5 bf but $2.10 per bf for 100 bf. You get the idea.

    Jet scroll saw

I forgot who it was but they posted a few days ago about getting a new Jet saw. Of coarse there is always You Tube. If you are going to spend that kind of money you need to look at a new Hawk. I am trying my best to resist buying one as I have an EX16 which is pretty nice. You know how it is we want bigger and better.

  21. I would also use Poplar with BB for the thin stuff !
    1 point
  22. I agree. the thicker (3/4, 1/2, 3/8) wood should be solid Poplar and the thin stock (1/4, 1/8,3/16) should be Baltic Birch Plywood.

Welcome to the village John from Turtle Creek, PA. Don't be afraid to ask any questions or add some helpful hints. You'll find a great group of folks here.

    Finishing Question

I guess I should further explain what I mean by light sanding. What I am actually doing is knocking off any tiny dust nibs with a piece of brown paper bag which is supposed to be about the same as 800 grit sand paper. This gives the finish a smooth satin appearance. Seems to work well with Krylon acrylic. Works well for me and after waiting the 24 hours for the oil based stain to dry I can complete the finishing in a very short period of time.
