    Custom plaque

Finally a project I made for me. I made it out of a piece of car siding that has been laying on my bench for far to long. I was on my way to toss it when I walked past the planner and thought I would see what it looked like after the groove was removed. I added the green felt backer and a saw hook on the back side to hang it. The pattern was a custom order from Sheila Landry designs.

    Finally back on

Well we are getting all moved into our new home in Arizona. It has been a little on the warn side but hey, it is Arizona you know. We got our new front room furniture today and our television and internet, as well as a phone put in today. My wife and son got all the walls decorated today and it is starting to feel like home. We really like the area we are in as there is about everything in the way of stores you can think of, unlike Heppner and surrounding area, unless you are willing to drive 90 miles to shop. I am starting on my shop now and the progress is a little slow but it will get done soon. I missed my wonderful family here in The Village and this is the first and only place I have gone to since I got my computer hooked up. We went to dinner and the temp at 4:30 was 111 degrees. The heat takes a lot out of one quickly here. We will be heading back to Oregon for a couple of weeks to take in the eclipse. This will be only the second total solar eclipse that I have ever witnessed and I do not want to miss it. Hope to be able to find some time to check out how everyone is getting along and see what you are all up to. I hope by the middle of next week I will get to have more time on line. Dick heppnerguy

    Yoga variation

I took my first pattern and modified it as a puzzle. Whaddayathink? Poplar untreated color yourself. I should add that I realized how spoiled I am with the Pegas MG blades, as these cut so wonderfully straight. I used Flying Dutchman puzzle blades and had to hold the piece at close to 45 degrees to cut on the line. Very annoying.

  9. Not really concrete, but something rather interesting... I've always bought my poplar boards from Home Depot but a few days ago we were at Lowe's (which is only 300 yards away) and I picked up two 6' boards, it was nice that they have it pre-cut in 6' lengths whereas at Home Depot I always had to find someone to cut the 10' - 12' long boards down for me so I could get them home. Anyway, I thought when I picked them up they felt heavier than I was used to and cutting them this week I swear these boards are denser and harder. I'm burning up blades faster than usual. Not really complaining, but surprised at there being such a difference between the quality of the wood between the two stores. I figured poplar was poplar... but I'd heard that Home Depot overall was of a lesser quality but never gave it much thought. Until now.

  14. Depending on the thickness metal is not much different to wood to cut. Get yourself some metal cutting blades and turn the speed down. Practice first, that is the best piece of advise I can give you. Good luck Mimi. Oh and if you fine you can cut it but it is a bit too flexible sandwich it between some ply. Marg

    Jet scroll saw

I do compound cutting quite often on mine. Have cut 1.5" material with no problem. Haven't had the need to go any thicker than that yet, but there looks to be a little more room under the upper clamp when I'm cutting at 1.5"

    Jet scroll saw

I have a jet saw now for about 6 months, very happy with it, I don't use it every day but enough to offer an opinion, blade changes are quick and easy, RJ

    Jet scroll saw

I've owned a Jet for almost a year now and am very happy with it. It is bottom-feed only, so if you are looking to top-feed look elsewhere. I love the blade clamp and being able to have multiple blades loaded and able to change out is a couple seconds is really nice. I have found myself using a wider variety of blades even on a single project just because one blade type might cut certain cuts better than others. Where I used to use pretty much the same blade throughout a project and make-do, now I can switch back and forth quickly and use the best blade choice for different cuts. Steve

    Jet scroll saw

Steve Good did a review of the Jet, it is on his Youtube channel and Carole Rothman has done a review of it also. I have not read much about it by users. I believe the Jet is a bottom feed only saw and if you are a bottom feeder that would not be a concern, if a top feeder, forget it. Have you considered the new Seyco saw. Top or bottom feed, very nice large table, the largest available. Great customer service.

    Jet scroll saw

I forgot who it was but they posted a few days ago about getting a new Jet saw. Of coarse there is always You Tube. If you are going to spend that kind of money you need to look at a new Hawk. I am trying my best to resist buying one as I have an EX16 which is pretty nice. You know how it is we want bigger and better.

  32. Poplar seems to be the popular choice. I would also use poplar.

  33. I would also use Poplar with BB for the thin stuff !
    1 point
  34. I agree. the thicker (3/4, 1/2, 3/8) wood should be solid Poplar and the thin stock (1/4, 1/8,3/16) should be Baltic Birch Plywood.

  35. I agree.I have used poplar in the past, found no knots, sands very easy, paint takes to it like a charm. The thinner wood BB ply unless you have a plainer.
