    Tee Time

Each year I donate a project to the local hospital's golf tournament. I saw this on Steve Good's site and said this is the one. I don't like making mini clocks because of the batteries. This one is 2 3/4" and uses AAA batteries. The upright is 3/4" Hard Maple and the base is 1/2" Poplar. I used FD UR #3 and #5 blades. The finish is two coats of spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

  2. I've had a couple of customers ask about a mermaid which wasn't available, so I asked Harvey to draw one up for me. I sent him a general design and had him work his magic and here is the result. I'll display it this Saturday for the first time.

  3. Plaque #3 complete. What should have been one of one. This is the one I will hang in the pistol shooting range I belong to. I started out to make only one for that, before done my son sold 2 for me. I had to complete them first so this is the last. I hope I do not have to do anymore. The other two were done with red oak and I put a 1/4" outside border around them. This one is Cherry, I increased the outside border to 1/2" I like them both the same. I can't wait to go hang it at the range and see how long it takes before anyone notices. May have a bunch of bullet holes in it when I get back!!

  5. A couple weeks ago Sasho posted a picture of a Superman trinket box. It caught my eye so I had to make one for myself but changed it up a bit. Last Friday I posted a picture of my project giving Sasho credit for inspiring me. My granddaughter saw my finished Superman box and told me that I needed to make a Batman box..........of coarse, I had to make it and got it done on Friday. Today at lunchtime I got a message from Sasho via FaceBook with a picture of a Batman box almost identical to the one I had just completed, with a message telling me that it might inspire me to make one of these. How Crazy!

This is a Steve Good pattern. It was easy and fun to make. I think the 3/4" standoffs are too long. I'd suggest making them 1/2". The background is just 1/2" BB ply stained cherry. I painted the edge black.

  7. I thought I had the Hawk trimmed out to it's lowest aggression setting, at least according to what I thought was factory default. When I tried to cut a coin, I had so much blade travel I couldn't see the lines. You ever have that rotten feeling in your stomach when something is wrong that you might not be able to fix? So I tried another approach to tuning it. Since the Hawk can run so very slowly, I could actually put the tool in the lower adjustment, and tune it while the saw was running. (I'm sure this isn't supported) There for a minute, I didn't think it was going to work, but then all the sudden, the saw fell into an almost motionless setting. You can imagine my relief. Anyway, of all my saws, the Hawk is the only one capable of being tuned on the Fly. The EX can sort of do this too, but you have to loosen the motor bolts, so I'm thinking that doesn't count.

    New guy from Iowa

Just joined here. I'm from Iowa and have been using a scrollsaw for the past 20 years. I have a 26 inch RBI Hawk that I bought in 1996 new. Never had any trouble with it and have used it a lot. The pictures are some of the signs I have been making the last few years.

  13. I know that I have not been on very often in the past month or so but with the move , buying all new furniture and setting up my shop, I have been pretty busy. However I did manage to get a few requests and decided it was about time to show you all that I am not permanently asleep here in the land of the sun. So here are some of the things that I remembered to take photos of before I shipped them. The light was poor in the room I took them in so they are a little fuzzy as a result. The remembrance plaque i make and give to anyone that has lost a loved one that I know. I have made a countless number of these, The second one is a Steve Good pattern that I had orders for three of these. the Arizona State plaque (designed by Sam Custodio) I have made three of these, the potters plaque is another of Sam's patterns I made this for a potter friend of mine as a surprise gift, and the wedding cross I mailed to an exchange student that lived with us 5 years ago and it getting married in three weeks. She lives in Slovakia. So you see, though I have not been real busy, I have not been out of the shop completely Dick heppnerguy

  17. I had heard of the 4 part video series from Gwinnett Woodworkers, but trying to watch it on my computer was SO slow, so I looked them up and found a contact number. I called and discussed it with them. Ended up sending them a $20 donation to their club and they sent me the entire series on a DVD. Makes it much easier. Nancy

  32. Note: If you cut puzzles from thick stock... do NOT modify the forward pitch of the blade to make it more aggressive. Holy crap, I spent 2 hours this morning trying to recalibrate pitch and angle of the blade after I decided to try setting it a bit more aggressive... Puzzle pieces wouldn't slide in and out from both sides, so I had to un-do what I did (once I remembered I'd changed it Saturday afternoon), but it took a lot of tweaking to get things back to where they were. In the meantime, poor ELMO the Aussie was sacrificed. May he rest in peace. LOL But I got him cut again and he's oiled now. Also, FYI, the little mark underneath that moves when you're adjusting the forward pitch is not exact, so be sure to double check the actual pitch rather than lining up the mark with where you think it should be. I ended up going from an aggressive forward pitch to a negative pitch and didn't realize it until I was still having puzzle issues. Good news... when stuff like this happens, you really get familiar with things on the saw as you're checking and tweaking various things. I still like the saw overall and I look forward to getting some Pegas blades that were recommended to me. It's all a learning experience when you buy a new/different saw. I'm getting there. My farmers market was a rain-out Saturday so this week is dedicated to cutting 40 puzzles for the big event. I'll then review my inventory and decide what else I think I need.

  36. If you find that too much, my Dewalt came very agressive but I did some tweaking to calm it down. You can look at your bottom clamp and see if something like this is possible.
