  2. Plaque #3 complete. What should have been one of one. This is the one I will hang in the pistol shooting range I belong to. I started out to make only one for that, before done my son sold 2 for me. I had to complete them first so this is the last. I hope I do not have to do anymore. The other two were done with red oak and I put a 1/4" outside border around them. This one is Cherry, I increased the outside border to 1/2" I like them both the same. I can't wait to go hang it at the range and see how long it takes before anyone notices. May have a bunch of bullet holes in it when I get back!!

  3. Hello! I am Josh and I am scrolling full time now, trying to make a spartan living from making old fashioned wooden toys and musical instruments from scrap wood and selling them at fairs and festivals. Ive been scrolling for fourteen years now but only last March, I was fired from my substitute teaching job here IN philadelphia (too much arguing with the principals) and decided to try to start my own small business. So, I put money from the unemployement compensation office towards a brand new dewalt 20" scrollsaw and a nice belt-sander. I used to have an old scrollsaw from the 1940's called "the Driver" but it broke a few years ago. Anyway, my philosophy right now is to make as many nice toys as possible, and then to sell them at prices which are dirt-cheap. this way, I can be reasonably assured that I will sell-out at a show, thus giving me a set, predictable, albeit low, salary. Since march, I have made: 36 parachute men, with real chutes that work($3) ; 25 magic wands that dont work but look good ($6) ; 52 toy jets (phantom F4's, F16's and Mirage 2000's,) at six bucks each; 32 bamboo cannons (I had to make the springs which make them shoot); bamboo flutes ($10); toy shields for snowball fights; some pretty magic amulets; pencil-helicopters ($5); some decorative pieces like bunnies and flowers; dollhouse bookshelves (full of tiny books), and right now I am working on toy banjos. The philadelphia folk festival is coming up, and I want to have 36 toy banjos all ready in the next three weeks. they are so much work, though. I often find that I am working twelve hours a day. fortunately I have no other social or business obligations, besides walking the dog. I just hope I can make a decent living doing this work. all I need is about 1300 a month, to cover all my expenses. I hope to begin some highly decorative christmas and hanukah ornaments this autumn, and with any luck, by the time the unemployement compensation ends, I will be taking in a good amount of money from those ornaments. besides this work, I enjoy hiking with the dog in the woods, cooking and baking , reading, mostly old horror stories, and music. I hope to learn a lot from this site, and be able to share my own small experience with all of you as well. cheers! the Scrollin'Fool! (Josh)

  5. A couple weeks ago Sasho posted a picture of a Superman trinket box. It caught my eye so I had to make one for myself but changed it up a bit. Last Friday I posted a picture of my project giving Sasho credit for inspiring me. My granddaughter saw my finished Superman box and told me that I needed to make a Batman box..........of coarse, I had to make it and got it done on Friday. Today at lunchtime I got a message from Sasho via FaceBook with a picture of a Batman box almost identical to the one I had just completed, with a message telling me that it might inspire me to make one of these. How Crazy!

  8. There is no such thing on the market that is odorless. Some products are less offensive but still carry an odor and that includes your wax concoction. Now all depends on what you call odorless and what time frame you are talking about. The color outcome is important also. If you want a warm tone then blo and then let dry for a day and top coat with a lacquer. Now you can get waterbased lacquers in any sheen. They have a less offensive smell. Polys will dry rather quickly and the smell is sealed. I am not a fan of shellac on scrolled projects. That is meant for large woodworking projects in my opinion. Good luck in your quest though.

  9. Hello everyone My name is Jean-claude I'm a craftsman baker pastry chef in Rouen in Normandy And as the retreat approaches, I go back to the scroll saw that I practiced more than 35 years ago and that the overwork of work had stopped me then, I leave almost to zero, Buy an EX 21 I've been watching the forum for several months, which I find very enriching and I finally decide to introduce myself with my poor English see you soon

    Tee Time

Each year I donate a project to the local hospital's golf tournament. I saw this on Steve Good's site and said this is the one. I don't like making mini clocks because of the batteries. This one is 2 3/4" and uses AAA batteries. The upright is 3/4" Hard Maple and the base is 1/2" Poplar. I used FD UR #3 and #5 blades. The finish is two coats of spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

  13. I've had a couple of customers ask about a mermaid which wasn't available, so I asked Harvey to draw one up for me. I sent him a general design and had him work his magic and here is the result. I'll display it this Saturday for the first time.

  16. Hi, I have finally got round to joining this forum as I love to read about other craftsmen and womens creations, I live in a very rural area of Scotland surrounded by mountains and forests etc with mainly wildlife for neighbours. I got my first scrollsaw in 2014 as a gift from my wife Ruth.......and have really caught the bug big time lol, I cannot do scrollwork due to only having full use of one hand/arm and tend to stick to Intarsia work as the pieces of wood are much chunkier and easier for me to hold (I actually use Visegrips/Molegrips to hold the wood as no pinch grip looks a bit strange but gets me by fine) My work is usually related to our local wildlife so things like Deer/Red Kites/Otters and Barn owls BUT I am also a motorcycle fanatic and have owned 40+ over the years including Harleys/Goldwings/Nortons etc so I also make motorcycle Intarsias......I have added some photos to my gallery but they haven't appeared yet so guess they will be getting checked out by Mods before going online? I have been on Steve Goode's forum and the UK Workshop forums for a while so some of you might already know my work.......its not great but keeps me amused which is always a good thing? Anyway hope to get to know you guys and maybe share some tips/ideas Cheers Brian Ps Scroll Saws OwnedAxminster Trade Series AWFS18 (Hegner Clone)Axminster Trade Series EX-30 (HMS Axminster Aircraft Carrier)

  19. Bob, The bottom blade holder is very loose on the end of the bottom arm. I should maybe remove both top and bottom blade holders and swap to see if I can turn the problem upside down ?? Don W

  23. Might try Steve Good's method, dipping in floor finish. This can be obtained in odorless, as well as fruit odors. It gives a matte finish, but can be waxed for a shinier finish.

    Local Critters

I was bored so I cut these for our park's educators. I plan on making many more as they are fun. Made of 3/4" poplar, cut with #3 and #5 pegas blades, and finished with 50/50 blo/ms.

    Where's Dick

Dick is fine, a busy man. I received a message from him a couple days ago. He has pop in a commented a couple times on the forum, over the past few weeks. He is still settling into his new digs, exploring, and making friends. I am sure he will be back in do time. He may be sitting on his beautiful new covered patio, fishing in the lake!! Life is tough.

  27. Thanks everyone for making me welcome here! I have meant to join for quite a while after fellow Brit Don (Watson) mentioned the village on the UK forums and its great to see such a varied selection of craftsmen/women creating great pieces of art. My hand/arm problems do hinder me a bit but its a case of either adapt or stop and get rid of my workshop which will never happen so I basically have to plan when my hands very bad to do less detailed work and also maintenance until its a bit better and then get back to the woodworking......slow process but i am getting a bit quicker and my wife is also helping me get organised lol Intarsia is still quite rare over here in the UK but more people are having a go which is good news and i try and encourage others to try Intarsia and share tips etc, we are also quite limited regarding decent hardwoods here so 99% of my projects are made from recycled old furniture and I have lots of Oak/Walnut/Mahogany/Beech etc all from old tables.....I also like to experiment using other materials than wood so you may see more Corian and even Pewter turning up in my intarsia projects (Pewter can be cast into flat sections and then cut using your scrollsaw and then polished up lovely, imagine a knight in armour with pewter armour etc ) Anyway enough of me waffling and thanks again Brian
