    Anniversary Portrait

Portrait of my wife and I from our wedding. I gave it to her Monday on our anniversary and she loved it. Thanks for another great pattern DonR. 1/4 Mahogany with BB backer. Cut with FD #2 spiral blades. It was my first cut with spiral blades but I got used to them pretty quickly.

  2. This pattern is by Jacob Fowler and found in the book "Woodworkers Pattern Book". He called it the 'Delicate Doe", but I renamed it the "Delicate Fawn" because we have a visit about once a week from a fawn just like this one. I enlarged the pattern by 40% to fit an 11" x 14" frame. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and FD UR #1 blades. The backing is black mat board. I framed it at ArtCrafters using Acrylic rather than glass. Comments welcome.

  5. I received the new lower arm for the saw today and I just swapped it out... (At least now I know how to dismantle the lower half of the saw) and early, quick testing is very promising. After 4 attempts I was able to cut a small puzzle piece and get it to slide in and out both sides. It's hot, 90+ degrees in my garage so I had to quit before I left a big puddle in the middle of the floor. The blade is not moving side to side as it was before and the overall vibration of the saw is almost completely gone! I'm feeling pretty good about it so far. More testing to be done over the next few days. I need to cut kids puzzles next week which will be a good "easy" test for the saw to break it in and for me to get familiar with it. Iggy is hoping for the best.

  7. With one week to go til my big event "Lazy Daze", I have what should be very close to my official tally of what I have cut the past 3 months in preparation for the event. Next week is devoted to cutting kids puzzles and I've included the number I plan on cutting. See attached for the final count... it's pretty crazy... and a picture of them all... My goal was to have 500... I'm a bit of an overachiever at times... or just a fool... Now I just need 1/2 of 1% of the attendees of the event to buy a puzzle from me to hit my sales goal. I'll start a thread next week and we'll have a contest to guess how many I sell. The 10 day weather forecast looks fabulous as of right now. Hope it stays true. Here is the breakdown of the duplicates I'm taking... Top 12 items I have 10+ of each. SEVEN HUNDRED PUZZLES... I'm worn out Lazy Daze Puzzle Count.pdf Iggy

Free wood is the best wood I say lol, this is cut on 1/2 inch pine that I had in the service truck,I used it to paint on,that's why it's black, and the orange paper backing is just what I had laying around

    Montana Strong

I came up with a way to use up all the scrap left over from my bigger Montana signs. This seems to be the popular attitude this year, especially as we are still in the middle of wildfire season.

  12. I got to thinkin' about this yesterday while sitting here in my chair, hoping the room would soon stop spinnin'. My allergies have settled into my ears. My bride says no shop work til we see the Sawbones, so my mind spins, too. I started keeping a journal recently on some different projects, mainly out of curiosity of time involved more than anything. But I also scribbled the wood species I used, blades, measurements, etc. In the 26 years I've been scrolling, I've never done this. I've found my memory ain't what it used to be, either.:( That was another reason for the journal. I also scribbled down adjustments I made to the saw thru the coarse of the project. That didn't amount to much, but a reference i reckon. I don't consider myself perfect my no means, but I am a perfectionist. And no two projects turn out the same, at least for me. So, I just thought I'd throw this out there & see what the rest of ya do, or think. Thank you in advance for your time & replies.

  15. This is why I say to everyone selling or thinking about selling your crafts online to do it the best legal way you can and know how.. and keep good bookkeeping records.. My cousin is a CPA and works for the state and is actually involved in these investigations... and she says most all states are going after this money from small online sellers.. also really watching how people claim there USE tax for online purchases from out of state.. ( you purchase things online you are supposed to claim those purchases under use tax so the state gets the % of sales taxes from your online purchase as if you purchased it local ) Not sure all states have the USE tax thing though.. Also while she claims they say they can only go back about 5-7 years.. she has personally seen them go after people more years than that.. mainly because there was a lot of $$ involved I believe.. Anyway.. just a heads up to keep excellent records.. Lawmakers Seek Taxes

    The herd

Just made from a basic pattern that I have modified many times. Scrap plywood and an unknown hardwood on the one with the inner cut outs. Lightly torched just to add an effect.

    Delicate Fawn

Thanks Gordie. Our framing Acrylite is about three times the cost of glass, but a lot lighter. I have left over pieces, so no cost. If I ship there is no worry about glass breaking.

  19. I take pictures of all of my projects, I do keep a journal especially for my magazine work. I have to track the time spent and if it is a complex project any notes or changes that need to be made to the design. I send all those notes with the completed project to SSWWC for the final article.

  20. I just heard from Nilus at BM and had a nice 20 minute chat with him. Long story short, the problem with my current saw is most likely the lower arm. After describing what he thought it was he mentioned that he'd bet that I could wiggle a certain thing and if it moved, then it was confirmation of what he thought, so I went out into the garage and sure enough that's what it was. So, the good news is we may have pinpointed the issue. He's making a fresh batch of lower arms and will ship one out next week. I'll update once it's in hand and installed on the machine. I'm still willing to continue trying to get this resolved rather than throwing in the towel. I really want this saw to work out for me. Iggy

  45. Reccomended size of this pattern is 10 x 14 inches, As usual I reduced size to make it more difficult and interesting to cut - my project is 8 x 12 inches. pattern by Alex Fox - http://alexscrollsaw.wixsite.com/scrollsawpatterns/patterns

  46. As usual some interesting discussions. Good points all around. And as I always say up front I am a loyal Hawk proponent. Having said that I am very glad Nilus is stepping up to take care of this but here are my concerns. If Nilus knew where to look then it is a problem that has surfaced before and if the lower arm has the ability to wiggle then something was not machined to spec or another part was undersized or possibly even wonky bearings. It is very easy to speculate on my part as I am not physically with the saw. But my point is that it doesn't matter who builds a saw but what does matter is that final QA , test run, wiggle test etc. before it goes to the customer. Small multitasking staff or not Hawk has to be very careful with this, our scrolling community is too small and well connected through social media. Iggy I am impressed with your willingness to work with Hawk I truly hope that in the end you have the awesome saw you certainly deserve and expected.

  47. For those that follow us into the Hawk family, I think it would be helpful to understand the support model. It's not great, or bad, but it is different. To me it feels like dealing with someone that has another full time job, or two. If you can reach them by phone (and you usually can within a few attempts/days), you are likely to talk to one of two ladies, both very nice, but one is much more knowledgeable (Nicole) than the other, so if you get the younger one, it will be pleasant, but maybe not productive. You might even get a call back from Nilus. An email might take a good while before it is answered. I have an email to Nilus asking if they would be willing to drill tap the clamps for the m6 x1, I think that was a couple of weeks back, so I'm taking that silence as a no :-) I suspect I won't hear back on that . . . . ever, but you never know. So all in all, I think I'm taking this away from my experience with them: These are seven good people that have multiple lines of business, including farming, making popcorn poppers, creating custom branded valve covers for the racing industry, making other woodworking tools, and etc. So, they are trying to juggle multiple businesses, and wearing different hats such as, the web guy is also a machinist, the Engineer is also an Owner, the lead support lady in a stay at home mom. Scroll saws are definately not their sole focus. They wear a lot of hats. I would not consider them "professional" in the same way you can always get hold of some inept college kid at Comcast, but with patience and time, you can carry on a conversation with them and hopefully troubleshoot your issues. If you are short of patience, Bushton isn't the company for you. Contrast that to Hegner and their U.S. support by Advanced. From my own experience, and general reputation, I get the sense that for that extra $1000, you get a saw that has very few adjustments and a lot less that actually goes wrong, which means their resources spend less time on the phone. You can always reach someone, and their support is also good. But, that saw cost more than my wife wedding ring, doesn't have top feeding ability, a ridiculously small table, much shorter arm than the Hawk (Mulitmax 22vs vs BM26), and more expensive parts. But, in turn . . . . it is pretty freaking worry/hassle free. Not saying I like Hawk better than Hegner, or vice versa, I am saying there is a give and take to either saw, especially in terms of cost and how they are supported. Hegner support is easy to contact and quick to respond, but if you want to "talk to the engineer", that guys speaks German and doesn't work for Advanced, and they haven't made any significant changes to that saw in 30 years or more. If you want to suggest an improvement for the Hawk, Bushton may or may not agree with your suggestion, but it will at least be heard. I still have some "challenges" with my setup, but I have a fleet of other saws, so I can afford to be patient as heck. I would loan Iggy one if he lived closer. I would say Iggy is learning a lot of patience as his volume is much closer to production cutting, and thus has a lot more riding on this saw than I do. Hopefully in the end, we both end up happy with our purchases.
