Stopped in a quilt supply store with my wife and showed the owner a picture of "Love To Quilt" wall hanging that I have done in the past. She asked what i get for them and ordered ten. After thinking she changed the order to 12. Also wants to see some ornaments that have something to do with quilting. The top row is made out of white oak, middle row walnut and cherry on bottom. I was thinking she may want to put a couple in shop to sale but instead she wants to give to each of her employees for Christmas. Stacked cut two at a time. Sue Mey pattern.4 points

Puzzles, puzzles, everywhere puzzles...
WayneMahler and 3 others reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
With one week to go til my big event "Lazy Daze", I have what should be very close to my official tally of what I have cut the past 3 months in preparation for the event. Next week is devoted to cutting kids puzzles and I've included the number I plan on cutting. See attached for the final count... it's pretty crazy... and a picture of them all... My goal was to have 500... I'm a bit of an overachiever at times... or just a fool... Now I just need 1/2 of 1% of the attendees of the event to buy a puzzle from me to hit my sales goal. I'll start a thread next week and we'll have a contest to guess how many I sell. The 10 day weather forecast looks fabulous as of right now. Hope it stays true. Here is the breakdown of the duplicates I'm taking... Top 12 items I have 10+ of each. SEVEN HUNDRED PUZZLES... I'm worn out Lazy Daze Puzzle Count.pdf Iggy4 points -

Scrolling and Repurposing
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to WayneG for a topic
Hi, I am new here, I have been scrolling for about 16 months now and love it. My mantra is to re-use/repurpose and recycle materials so that they don't hit the landfill. 95% of my pieces are cut from old desks, chairs, flooring and the like. I pick up peoples scraps bring them home, cut them up into salvageable pieces, glue them together and create my next canvas. I tend to favour half to three quarter inch stock for two reasons, one its more common for me to get and secondly it adds such a great dimension to the piece. Happy scrolling!2 points -

Selling online or those thinking about it..
MTCowpoke22 and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
This is why I say to everyone selling or thinking about selling your crafts online to do it the best legal way you can and know how.. and keep good bookkeeping records.. My cousin is a CPA and works for the state and is actually involved in these investigations... and she says most all states are going after this money from small online sellers.. also really watching how people claim there USE tax for online purchases from out of state.. ( you purchase things online you are supposed to claim those purchases under use tax so the state gets the % of sales taxes from your online purchase as if you purchased it local ) Not sure all states have the USE tax thing though.. Also while she claims they say they can only go back about 5-7 years.. she has personally seen them go after people more years than that.. mainly because there was a lot of $$ involved I believe.. Anyway.. just a heads up to keep excellent records.. Lawmakers Seek Taxes2 points -
Hi All. Thanks to everybody who filled out the SSV survey. I found it very helpful. This helps me identify areas of improvement and other areas which I probably shouldn't mess with. Thanks! You guys are awesome!1 point

Do you keep a shop journal with notes on your projects?
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I don't keep a journal. Used to take pictures (35mm film, pre-digital era), but have gotten away from that, mostly due to the fact that I don't have a cell phone capable of taking, storing & displaying them. I too get asked the question all the time as to how long it takes me to make stuff. I simply say "I don't know", because I don't bother to keep track. It's a hobby and I'm not on a time clock, so it isn't really all that important to me how many hours/days it takes me to make something. If I made stuff to sell, I'm sure I would have a much different perspective. I do maintain a list of the Christmas ornament I make each year. Every year, since 1993, I choose a pattern and make dozens of ornaments from the pattern to give away to friends/family. The first few years, I probably made 30 or 40. Last couple years, I've made just under 100. I keep a list simply to avoid using the same pattern twice. I do record what it was made from and how it was finished. That's about all I keep track of.1 point -
Thanks folks, when I grew up in Canada you could simply place your unwanted furniture at the end of the driveway and garbage men would pick it up.... Not so anymore and charges to dispose of items has resulted in people trying to give it away before they incurring costs and finding a way to transport to the dump1 point

Selling online or those thinking about it..
kmmcrafts reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
It is a real complicated mess. My state allows an estimate on online purchases based on your net income. What complicates it is some of the bigger online sites like Amazon charges sales tax already so if not careful you can pay twice.1 point -

Hey Roly, I've thought about selling them un-oiled, but they look soooo much better when they're oiled that I'd be concerned they'd be less attractive and wouldn't sell as well if they were dry. The majority of them are purchased by people for display purposes, not for kids to play with.1 point -
Do you keep a shop journal with notes on your projects?
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Phantom Scroller for a topic
I just take pictures of everything on my laptop and back up to a external hard drive sometimes I may write a special instruction on the photo about something I changed in the cutting process. I'm now looking for some free software to keep track of them all like a database sort of software. Roly1 point -
Illinois has come up with the brilliant idea that if you make a certain amount of money through the year, they will charge you tax on purchasing online. It doesn't matter how much you actually spend, if you make x dollars, send us y dollars for internet tax. Even if you owe no other taxes, this has to be paid.1 point

I just hope they stay together. :-) Not really... I use shrink wrap bags for the duplicates that I take to events. The ones I put on display, I put in a tub, laying them flat in layers on cardboard. I can get about 100 of them in this tub.1 point

Do you keep a shop journal with notes on your projects?
Phantom Scroller reacted to oldhudson for a topic
For a long time I kept good notes, but I guess I getting lazy in my old age. (I'm a 'general' woodworker and not just a scroller.) And even though I'm mostly a hobbyist, I tried to track everything: what was made Where the plans/pattern came from what, if any, modifications I made to the plans/pattern they type of wood(s). If I'm following plans I'd list any substitutions or stock that I choose to employ. where I got the stock careful notes on finishing, , colors, number of coats, blah, blah who the project is made for, if not us problems I encountered and what I did to resolve them and how I install the project (for cabinets, shelving, special molding - especially if it's in someone else's house) time and charges if it was a custom job for cash or trade and if a project had outside cost, other than the usual stuff, say glass for a cabinet door. Who I got it from and what they charged. At the back I keep a list of odd (rarely used tools/jigs) and where I stashed them. An entry might read: Small cross cut sled: west wall of garage near ceiling. I'm going to try and get back to that, it's really good to have a record.1 point -

Not me, I don't even keep a photo journal of the things I make, I just never remember to take pictures. I probably would take pics and keep a photo journal, if I owned a cell-phone to take the pics with. I don't, and it's a lot of bother to keep running back and forth from the house to the workshop.
