Carousel finished
barb.j.enders and 2 others reacted to EarltheScroller for a topic
Finally have the Carousel almost finished. This shows the scroll saw work that surrounds the different parts. I carved and painted all 12 animals (8 go up and down) and rebuilt much of the original construction to include the scroll saw work. The picture is sort of blurry because I had to have it rotating to have the lights come on. Only you guys will appreciate the 16 panels and 24 ornamental pieces (mirror surrounds and animals) around the top. LOL3 points -
Thanks to Bob for the pattern on this., Finished if off and mailed it to the fellow who asked for it. I use 6 inch clear oak threshold material I get from a mill. These are off cuts and waste for them, I use them up for sayings like this and they come out great. One man's garbage is another mans gold. jim penquin3 points

My neighbor is a Saab nut... At the request of his wife I made this for him. Griffin cut from oak flooring, circle from a dresser drawer bottom, backboard from pine Ikea entertainment unit, frame is from a maple side table... It's 20" x 20". Turned out pretty good. He tells me his Saab club buddies will be paying me a visit...2 points

Animal "Puzzles"
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to JOE_M for a topic
Not really my thing but I was babysitting a cnc router a few weeks ago so I cut out about 20 of these on the scroll saw to kill time, using common pine I had laying around. Here's half, the rest are drying in the workshop. The book advertised "complete instructions" and the instructions for the colors were "this is a trade secret." That was probably the best written part of the book, which is now in the garbage. I can't really tell what level they're geared for - there is no continuity between animals - but they're going to a 4-1/2 year old. Colors are diluted acrylics, wood dyes, wood stains, and whatever else I had in the shop. Finish is just a couple shots of lacquer. I tried the cut shellac people suggested, it just ran right off. I tried dipping shellac straight out of the can, it stuck but was very rough and impossible to sand the edges smooth. I tried dipping in tung oil and the tung oil turned grayish purple green and ran off, except for the nooks and crannies where it stuck in big blobs that made it impossible to fit the pieces together until I scraped them off. On the bright side, I got rid of a few cans of finish that were just going stale on the shelf.2 points -
Emery boards will wear out quick. I have glued emery cloth to blades and got better results. When I first started scrolling I had to do some sanding but it didn't take long before I quite sanding.2 points

Hey Brian, congrats on the new Hawk order. Funny, I have my newest Dewalt in my car to take with me today to Raleigh to the service center to get it looked at under warranty. We'll see how that goes. I'm glad you still decided to go with the Hawk even after following my buying process. The saw, so far, runs great now that all has been figured out. The customer service at Bushton Manufacturing is solid and they'll do whatever it takes to make things right. I hope you get to simply plug yours in and start using it when it arrives.2 points -
Choosing the correct blade
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
Pine can be tough to cut but if you are take your time and use a sharp blade it is okay. I am starting my Christmas ornaments and I have cut the body in 3/4 inch pine. I used FD Ultra Reverse #3 for all the interior detail and not an issue so far. I used FD-UR for the exterior. What I like about the UR is that the surface does not need to be sanded. I used FD-UR #5 on exterior. I also cut a prototype in 1 inch and didn't have any issues. I like the pine as this will be decorated and painted by the boss. Only have 16 more to go and 34 of the feet.2 points -
Well I guess I finally had enough with my 788. I had it in the shop at the end of the year last year and the Dewalt dealer could not figure out what was wrong with it so they just gave me a new 788. At the time I thought that was great in order to keep a happy customer. Well I took that saw back to them in late June and they had it for about a month till late July to fix a tension issue. I took it back to them this week for a bad knocking in the back of the saw and the same tension issue. Well the will most likely have it for another month trying to fix it. Meanwhile I have been using my Porter Cable saw which was a backup saw. I made the discussion to make the Jump to a high end saw sense i do mostly Intarsia. I just order a new BM 26. I had been thinking about upgrading for awhile but was waiting on Funds. Things seemed to fall in place over the past few weeks and I sold a few "big" ticket items in my shop which helped me cover the cost of a new upgraded saw. I was following all the posts lately from Iggy and everyone else to see how all the service issues & concerns washed out. Now the wait begins for my new play toy. Brian1 point

Hey Gang, Just a quick update for ya if you're interested. I arrived at the mega event at precisely 5am this morning to setup. Twas a long day. The weather was perfect, the crowd was large, people were happy to have a nice day to roam around. Remember the question in my mind was a larger crowd or a huge number of vendors going to impact my sales compared to a similar event in the same town I did back in April. The answer turns out to be that having 350 vendors compared to 170 vendors means that the pool of spending money being spread out to more vendors is what matters. In April, at the similar event, I sold 96 puzzles. Today, I sold almost the exact same, 93 puzzles. No complaints at all, but I had a target of 150 for today. Tomorrow will be weak, the 2nd day of 2 day events always is, and it's only 4 1/2 hours in duration tomorrow compared to 9 hours today. If I sell 40 tomorrow I'll be happy. The good news is the folks next to me that were selling really cheap yard art items, sold out and they won't be there tomorrow, so I can set my booth up like I do at the farmers market with my tables around the perimeter of the tent so people don't have to step inside. I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Talk with ya soon. Iggy1 point

I was wondering if any of you folks have ever bought from Otto Frei. I took a marquetry class a couple of years ago and the person putting on the class told us that he purchases all of his blades from Otto Frei along with the #68 drill bits. They have a lot of jeweler's supplies. I bought a gross of their 2/0 blades and a dozen bits. They also have a few sizes of blades in the Pegas brand. I just thought I'd throw this out there for general consumption. Ray http://www.ottofrei.com/search?keywords=saw blades1 point

Nice work Aggie. Isn't it surprising how fast word can get around like that! Not surprised though because you are doing excellent work on these doggie patterns and everybody loves things with their dog - just like they love their dog. Be prepared, the cat people will be hitting you up next once they get wind of it! Thanks for sharing.1 point

I wasn't planning on cutting any more this week, but I received 3 custom orders this past Saturday and Harvey got them to me quickly and it gave me an opportunity to do a real test of the Hawk. First 2 puzzles cut out of poplar. Meet Duke and Luky (yes, Luky, pronounced 'Lukee"). I haven't oiled them yet as I have one more to cut either this evening or in the morning. I also tested the new Pegas Modified Geometry blades in a size #3... they are thin... thinner than the Olson Mach Speed #3 I usually use. Overall, a grade of A+ so far. The saw and the blades did great. It's definitely slower cutting than I'm used to, but actually, I kind of like it, it's more relaxing and I hope to stick to a schedule of 5 puzzles per day as opposed to the 10 a day I've been doing the past 3 months in advance of my event this weekend. The saw ran well, it turns sharper than the DeWalt by far and I feel very comfortable using it. Bottom feeding and blade changing are easier than I expected and I'm almost as quick with it as I was with the DeWalt. The Pegas blades are fantastic. I think the #3 wears out a little faster being thinner, and that's OK, I just have to be sure to swap them out rather than try to force them. I'm very happy right now. Iggy1 point

Choosing the correct blade
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
The only reason I'm going to use pine is I have a scrap large enough to get 4 bowls out of it. But, after talking with IguanaDon, I might just have to run over to Lowe's and buy some poplar. I've never worked with poplar before so I welcome the experience. I sure do want to thank all of you who chimed in on my inquiry. Ray1 point -
Choosing the correct blade
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
A #5 reverse tooth is my go to size for 1/2" or greater. I have and still use many brands and style blades though mostly Pegasus. Instead of playing with pine use poplar. Due to the grain pine is actually harder to get a true cut on especially when cutting with the grain. Good luck and hope to see pictures soon.1 point -
