    1930 Buffalo fire truck

I bought a plan from Gratto toy plans and made the truck with a few changes to the plan. I used poplar, walnut and many round toothpicks for the many small parts. It took the use of the table saw, miter saw, scroll saw, lathe, drill press , jointer, planer and drum sander along with many hand tools to complete it.

  3. I haven't posted much because I've been busy with orders for the Montana Wallhangings. This one was a custom order for a small community college, so it's a little different than the norm. I was asked to do my normal wallhanging with the college logo on it. I was able to find some old barnwood with a little red left on it that kinda matches the school's color scheme.

    Boxes!

We have an Autumn Fair in November, here in Westray, and last year boxes seemed to go down well so I've been busy churning out boxes! I made a jig to make mitre box sides quite quick and easy letting me knock out a load of box blanks quite quickly (I know that bit has nothing to do with Scroll Saws). Here are some scroll sawed with the embellishments that will finish them off.

    Free wood

This morning a friend of mine dropped off a load of free wood. This is all Rimu from a kitchen refit on an old property. The builder was going to burn it but luckily my friend saved it for me. Included in this pile is a beam 7 inches wide by 3 inches thick and just over nine feet long! It will take a while to sort through but I have already dismantled the drawer boxes and thought I would share my process. I don't have a table saw so I use a cordless circular saw and speed square to separate the drawer panels from each other. After de-nailing, the scraps go into my kindling box or to await paint removal first. I run the drawer fronts through the bandsaw to remove the dovetail ends and the groove where the drawer bottom sits. I keep the drawer bottoms which tend to be cheap ply, hardboard or laminate although I don't often have a use for these. This picture shows the cabinet sides with drawer runners. I wet one piece to show the beautiful colour. Now, after de-nailing, I have a pile of scrollable pieces ready for milling on the planer thicknesser and sanding before use. Obviously this has some splits and nail holes but I can often orientate the pattern to work around that. I hope this helps somebody and inspires people to try reclaimed wood. Rob

  10. I don't ever want to live near an ocean of in a flood plain. Given the history of hurricanes, storm surges, spring floods, and rising sea levels....I fail to understand why anyone would. That said I hope it changes coarse and heads back to sea.

Congrats on getting your saw. I have had two of them. I made a custom stand that plans are readily available for on the internet. I wish you all the best with this venture.

    Bob's Trivet

I finally got my saw going a little better. It still clunks along but works. I did this trivet pattern Bob posted a short time ago. Thanks for the pattern Bob. I used Spalted Cherry my brother gave me.

  16. Based on the latest track and predictions, what I'll experience Monday and Monday night are tropical storm force winds of 50-60mph and 2-3 inches of rain. Nothing major and hopefully won't lose power. So far, just tracking and planning (filling gas cans, buying bottled water, etc) has eaten a bit into my time, but I'm still plugging away at the day job and cutting a puzzle or two. Just finished 2 new animals I'll share pictures of soon.

    Yesterday's craft fair

Here is a picture of my setup from yesterday's craft fair. It was a beautiful spring day which being an indoor event perhaps limited footfall a bit but I enjoyed myself and made a decent profit. Iggy's dog non-puzzles were popular. I can see myself ordering some more patterns. Rob

Stand Measurement. Top. Front 11 1/8" Back 5 3/8" Distance front to back 24 3/16" I would make this 24" Bottom. Front 22 3/16" Back 14 3/4" Heighth. 31" I am 6' tall and add 2 x 6 to the top and this is just the right height for me standing. Piece of advice there are no bearings on the piece of metal connecting the two back arms . I grease these with # 2 bearing grease every 10 hours of use. An old time scrolled who is my mentor told me to do this so as not to lose the side to side motion in the blade caused by this area wearing. I guess it works blade is still a nice fine line when running. I use my say at least 25 hours per week.

Hi Alan, welcome to the site. I don't understand what you mean by an angled base, is it something you make to raise the back end of the scroll saw? If that's all you want to do, then all you need is a piece of 2x4 that is just a bit longer then the width of your saw. Place the 2x4 under the back of the saw and bolt it down, if that doesn't raise it high enough to suit you, then just keep adding boards until you get the elevation you want. Len

Not sure this will help but have you tried going to the Porter Cable website and downloading the owner's manual? I have done that with all of my power equipment because I bought everything used and none of it came with manuals. There are sites that can supply just about anything you need. Good luck with your stand. Ray

  41. Well, there are many ways to answer what you just wrote. The bottom line is though, nothing is made the way it used to be done. And, there are so many joints in a scroll saw as opposed to a bandsaw that there is no comparison. When you buy a piece of equipment today, you must plan on bringing it home and fixing what they didn't. Those Chinese are working their little fingers to the bone to turn out the crap that we are buying. Just as soon as we stop buying their crap, things might improve. Like I have said, I bought a used type 1 that was U.S. made. No problems at all with the exception of the main drive bolt coming loose after I don't know how much use. I used to have a shop full of good U.S. made equipment but when we sold out to go full time RV living, it all got sold. Now, my shop consists of mostly Harbor Freight stuff. I know in my mind when I buy it that i"m buying cheap. So, I'm not disappointed when I get it home and have to fix stuff. My bandsaw is a Chinese Delta. It can't compare to the old one I had but it is still not bad. I guess what it comes down to is this....if you have enough gold in your gold mine, then buy the best you can buy. Otherwise, you just put up with the occasional repair tasks. If your DW788 was as well built as you had hoped, it would not have been a $500 saw. Ray
