I cut a load of box sides to length using a cross cut sled and stop on my table saw and then I use my router to chamfer the ends to 45 degrees. The jig works with my router and router fence and basically just holds thin narrows tock square and flat - This is a plan view showing the two slides that hold the stock against the block that holds them square to the fence. I can handle pieces up to 3" wide which is wider than I will ever do. Plus wider than this and one probably wouldn't need a jig. You can see on the I also have a couple of toggle clamps mounted on the main block and use these to hold the stock down while it is run past the 45 degree bevel router bit. I adjust the router height (depth) so that I just get a full 45 degree chamfer on the end of the piece. Once this is set up I can machine as many pieces as I like quite quickly. The guides are cut from 1/2" plywood and the whole lot is mounted on 1/4" MDF. Hope that helps. Phill2 points -

Marge there's no water in any stores as of today.I helped unload a truck at my friends store with 100 cases of 24 bottles of h2o that came down from Orlando ordered yesterday. It got here early afternoon..He sold 25 in a couple of hours. He'll try again tomorrow. There's absolutely no wind at all for days here, the tempest, the calm before the storm.I'll be in a tall warehouse and kind of blocked from straight on winds.I think i need to park my car so it's hidden from east winds and then in the eye change it so its hidden from west winds.I've 15 gallons of water and a tank of gas i can use for the 1000 watt generator if need be.I like my cold water. And i can scroll too if i want.I like having the smallest generator as it's quieter and uses much less gas.hopefully the warehouse doors hold up and the windows survive on the car outside.God willing!2 points -

We have an Autumn Fair in November, here in Westray, and last year boxes seemed to go down well so I've been busy churning out boxes! I made a jig to make mitre box sides quite quick and easy letting me knock out a load of box blanks quite quickly (I know that bit has nothing to do with Scroll Saws). Here are some scroll sawed with the embellishments that will finish them off.1 point -

I bought a plan from Gratto toy plans and made the truck with a few changes to the plan. I used poplar, walnut and many round toothpicks for the many small parts. It took the use of the table saw, miter saw, scroll saw, lathe, drill press , jointer, planer and drum sander along with many hand tools to complete it.1 point

Yes, I imagine so. It is always interesting to see what does and doesn't sell well and it is often not what one would imagine. Last year I did a few with ribbons (made from wood) and similar sort of things to the one with the dog rose e.g. I was really quite proud of them and thought they were my best efforts. While people picked them up and made nice comments, they were actually the last to sell.1 point -

I use hot glue on the edges of the stack. I just stack the blanks with the edges flush and hold it together with some spring clamps, then run a few small vertical strips across the edges. This works best if the cutting is contained entirely within the edges of the stack and if the blank isn't particularly large. If the cutting shares an edge, then you will have some glue to remove from the edge of a finished piece.1 point -

Based on the latest track and predictions, what I'll experience Monday and Monday night are tropical storm force winds of 50-60mph and 2-3 inches of rain. Nothing major and hopefully won't lose power. So far, just tracking and planning (filling gas cans, buying bottled water, etc) has eaten a bit into my time, but I'm still plugging away at the day job and cutting a puzzle or two. Just finished 2 new animals I'll share pictures of soon.1 point -

I don't ever want to live near an ocean of in a flood plain. Given the history of hurricanes, storm surges, spring floods, and rising sea levels....I fail to understand why anyone would. That said I hope it changes coarse and heads back to sea.1 point -

Latest I saw, Irma is as big as Texas, if so that means 840 miles across. The rain and wind on the north east side is always the worst from what I understand. But Jose is out there right behind it too. If it were me, I would board it all up and take a vacation, good luck Iggy.1 point -

No doubt you'll get some rain and winds,it's just a matter of how much. Back in the day, all hurricanes were named after women because they were so unpredictable. At least that's what my dad told me.1 point -

Got in laws in Myrtle Beach to worry about. Here in PA the worst that normally happens in our immediate neighborhood, is some trees down and power outage. A few miles away, folks built houses and cabins on flood plains. They chose it is all I can kindly say. My house is 100 feet above the stream out back, 200 ft above the river a mile away. and 360 feet above sea level. We get the hype every time there is a possible snow storm. Stores empty of bread milk and toilet paper at the mention of a heavy frost. My preparation consists of making sure the generator is fueled up. That the backhoe is ready and there is gas for the chain saws. During a tropical storm several years ago about the third day without power, we invited several neighbors over for a BBQ, hooked up the DVD player and showed movies on the big TV for a few hours. Everybody helped and we had a good time. Those who had no alternative power were happy for the few hours relief and the meal. My Mrs is the type that insists on back up systems. we have the generator, 12 volt lights to plug into the vehicles, kerosene lanterns, flashlights and candles. A propane stove, a BBQ grill and an older Coleman camp stove we use outdoors. We even keep a 12 volt TV set and antenna. The media rumor hype that goes with these storms aggravates the crap out of me. If some idiot reads Gerbil droppings and says there will be a 70 foot storm surge, the news reports it and some other idiot puts it up on face book as if it is from the National weather service. I do fault our Government for letting such crap go on. Now, I do feel that some folks should be called on the carpet for not being prepared. at least 24 hours before the storm, the National Weather service did say there would be 24 to 36 inches of rain and low lying areas around Houston were not evacuated. I understand that the Irma storm surge is enough to submerge some inhabited islands in the bahamas. That is bad. A 20 ft storm surge would submerge most of Florida south of Coral Gables. Iggy, my thoughts and prayers for you and your community, and others who may be like affected. .1 point -

I've not really gotten to the point where I can show any work here (unless you really want to see some asymmetrical circles and squares). But I did get my dust collector for my Hawk finished this weekend. I started with a shop vac short upholstery nozzle, added a stand and magnets to the base (ss8.jpg, ss9.jpg, ss10.jpg, ss11.jpg). Adapted a PVC elbow and fit the nozzle and 2 lengths of straight shop vac pipe. I drilled a hole in one pipe and epoxied a short tube to connect the blade tube to and then everything is collected by the shop vac. (ss2.jpg, ss3.jpg, ss4.jpg) These fittings took a little sanding or cutting to get everything to fit. The silver pipe clamp at the end of the base also has magnets on the bottom so everything can be moved/shifted, broken down, cleaned, stored, modified, etc. ss7.jpg shows the entire set up. The blade tube is connected to the hold down foot and is therefore adjustable up and down depending on the thickness of the work (ss12.jpg, ss13.jpg). It works quiet well. After about an hour of sawing last weekend there may have been 1/2 a teaspoon of dust on the table and maybe a full teaspoon under the lower arm. I don't have a before and after picture yet but I'll try to post one up after next weekend. The only items I purchase for this (that I didn't already have around) were the plastic tubing, tubing holders and the 90 degree elbow. The magnets are even recycled. They come from the toothbrush part of my Sonic electric toothbrush and I must have 40 of them that I've collected over the years.1 point
