Christmas Word Art - O Holy Night
Dave Monk and 3 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
I needed a quick easy project from the new issue of SWWC Winter 2017. The pattern is by Bruce Shea. I used 3/4" Poplar for the word art and 1/4" Yellowheart for the star. The blades used were FD UR #1 and #5. The finish was one coat of sanding sealer and two coats of spray Shellac. Comments welcome.4 points -

Finishing with BLO
amazingkevin and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Drying time for BLO is typically measured in days. Some folks will say to let it dry for up to 10 days before use, 4-5 is more typical, depending on conditions. It isn't intended to be used as a final finish, because it really doesn't offer much when compared to other finishing products. It does darken the wood somewhat, which will help accentuate the grain, especially on darker colored woods like walnut or cherry. However, once dry it's very dull looking and provides little to no practical protection from scratches, abrasions, household chemicals, heat or moisture. It's easy to apply and to keep the wood looking fresh, it needs to be periodically re-applied. However building up too much BLO on the wood will lead to curing problems and perhaps even a gummy residue that attracts dust & dirt like a magnet. I like BLO and use it as a colorant, but almost always topcoat with something else.2 points -
Celtic pendant/ wind battered tree
frankorona reacted to WayneG for a topic
Rescued 40, 3 foot, 3 inch by 3/4 inch Japanese cherry hardwood flooring today. 95% of my materials are free but at times I make a buy like this when the wood is hard to get or expensive. About 6o sq feet from a re- use it store. 20$. First item i made was this celtic pendant that absolutely had gorgeous colours. I gotto two out of the cut. The wood is beautiful. Can't wait to see what I am going to make... Tonight I cut this wind battered tree from this same Japanese cherry, it's hard wood for sure. Wood database doors not have it listed though, so I can't find the janka hardness. This tree is gonna look wild when it's done I think as the collars are gonna pop with tung oil1 point -

Finishing with BLO
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Roberta Moreton for a topic
When using BLO, use light coats and wipe off aftwe about 10 minutes. It absorbs into the wood, if you leave that top layer there, it will get gummy. This is why I don't use it for fretwork. Use Danish oil, mineral oil, lemon oil, or a spray finish with light coats.1 point -

My experience is BLO dries very slowly. Like over many days. That is an additional benefit of mixing with MS. It speeds up the drying. Even mixed it takes a couple days to dry.1 point

My personal experience at a tractor / car show doing crafts wasn't too bad.. but I really think that was a rare occasion.. Why? because being a car guy myself and involved in the car / tractor show community over the years.. While us car guys like our cars... and things related to cars.. many of us won't buy a home decor piece.. we are saving money for that next car part for our next project etc... that's almost like a scroll sawer buying another persons scroll work, LOL why buy it when we can make our own.. I find in my years of selling.. men aren't the best people to promote our work to.. I'd say about 98% of my men related scroll work sell to women that are purchasing as gifts for a male.. Who is the dominant gender at a car / tractor show? LOL I rarely will even market my products to the male gender.. rarely show men my scroll work.. only time I really bring it up is when I am at a gathering of some sort and someone ask what I do for work or hobbies etc.. then I get my phone out and show photos etc.. Many men would like to have some of the things I make.. but they aren't paying that price for it either.. most say.. I'd make my own for that kind of money.. Maybe just the type of men I hang out with which is the " do it yourselfers " type etc.. For instance.. I have a good friend into VW's I made a VW clock..he loves the clock I made.. but not so much so to pay me $50 for it..instead he goes out and buys a nice VW hub cap for $75 and drills a hole in it for a clock motor.. he is all proud of the clock he made... hardest part of making that was drilling the hole in the center, LOL But he is proud in that he made it himself.. I think it's a cool clock.. but didn't take much talent to make it.. and he has more money invested than just buying mine.. One of the wives in the VW club bought my clock for her husband for his birthday.. he loves the clock... so much so would he have bought it? probably not.. be he is very happy that he didn't get socks or underwear again and got something manly.. She is happy to have bought him something he really does like.. Anyway.. many men at the car shows are crafty in that... they build these cars,, they will built their own clock or whatever car related thing they want.. and they most likely aren't spending money on wall hangings.. They are after that certain part in the parts swap meet.. while they will "wow" your wood art wall hanging... they aren't buying it.. Just my two cents, Kevin1 point

Garapa Wood
Phantom Scroller reacted to trackman for a topic
I picked up a piece of garapa were I get my wood. They were out of yellow heart and first time having this type in stock. Just a bit darker than yellow heart but cuts a lot harder. This cross I have made in the past using only two blades. To cut it this time using garapa wood it took 9 blades (#5 pegas mg) and wanted to burn worst than cherry. I didn't think I was going to get it resawed from 4/4 to 2/4 even with a new band saw blade. Won't be buying anymore of this unless to make a box or something that doesn't take a lot of fret cutting. It is a Sue Mey pattern, almost forgot.1 point -

In another post I told about the good deal I got on a Jet spindle sander. Well went to another auction an picked up this craftsman rotary tool bench for $5.00. There was talk about them a few months back an I was going to make one but never got around to it. The auctioneer and other people didn't know what it was. I am going to mount my bench top router, bench top 6" jointer and a down draft sanding box on it. It is going to save a bunch of space in shop. Also at same auction I picked up a very well build 4'x6' work bench for $25.00.1 point

Your still the best Bobscroll! Thanks buddy!1 point -
Nice. It was my grand-daughter that got me started scrolling (the kids dinosaurs). Funny story, Mrs. Iggy and I took the little one to lunch one day and we're entertaining her while we wait for our food to be delivered. She was 3 at the time... Grandma is drawing shapes on a piece of paper and asking her what they are... Circle! Square! Diamond! Triangle! Grandma decided then to be a smartass and drew a shape... Wren yells out OCTAGON!!!! She was right... It totally blew us away.1 point

Wood selections for chess sets and where to buy
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Have you given a look at Ocooch Woods. They have blocks 2x2x12 or 1.5x1.5x12 in different species. I have not bought blocks of wood from them but I have bought quite a bit of the scroll saw ready wood and never had a bad piece. Another good wood for the light colors pieces is Basswood. http://ocoochhardwoods.com/carving_stock.php1 point
