    Getting Back in Shape

I let too much time go without practicing the detailed stuff, so I cut a few simpler patterns to get my "feel" back, and then cut this. Kind of a tricky pattern, so only second time I've cut it. First time I cut this, it was by special request for a friend. This go around, I'll probably put this in the craft store to see if it sells. -----Randy

    New Police Chief

We have a new police chief that woke us up at 5am the other day because the neighbors house was on fire so we could put water on our roof until the fire department showed up. So we made this desk name plate for him to show our appreciation.

  6. First photo is one of the many scrap bins.. he lets me pick stuff out of these.. but I rarely do because of the wood typically green.. needing planed etc.. and my time of running dumpster diving ( so to speak ) LOL and you only get whatever type wood he may be cutting that day.. I find I'm better ahead to just buy lumber all ready to go.. anyway this scrap ends up in a chipper to make wood chips for the local landscaping places. Next photo is of a cant - slat machine.. and the following photo is of a pallet of cants and then a pallet of slats.. you put the cant in one end and they come out the other as slats.. I think there are around 5 bandsaws in this machine that you can change their location so if you wanted you could adjust it for making 2x4's instead of slats.. Next is a sawdust pile from the mill itself.. that pile is only from this morning.. Next is the log deck and the de-barker.. but the photo doesn't really show much here.. I took some video of the outfit and the actual mill sawing logs etc.. but I need to get my son to help me edit the clips and help me upload these.. if anyone has any interest.. Next photo is just logs.. he says those will be completely gone by days end.. I intended to get more photos and video.. like to have gotten a picture of one of the bandsaw blades.. they are about 10 inch wide blades and maybe 1/8" thick maybe bigger.. been a while since I've seen one.. even though I walked right by them today Anyway, I got video of the sawmill itself sawing a log.. the chipper and the de-barker machine.. if anyone would have an interest in seeing any of it I'll see if my son can help me get a video up.. also my uncle ( lives next door to me ) has a mill that was built back in the 1800's.. of coarse it's been updated to a modern 6 cylinder truck motor to power it.. I could walk over there and get a few pictures too if interested?

    Halloween Challenge

Howdy All. I thought it would be fun to start incorporating some Scroll Saw Challenges on SSV. So let's start off with a Halloween challenge! The theme for this challenge is "Halloween." Post your Halloween themed finished project, or a pattern you designed here. The theme is open to interpretation. You can post something spooky, harvest, or fall related project. When you post it, say a little something about it. Maybe a little story related to the project, what inspiration you took, materials or techniques used. It doesn't have to be elaborate. But it's nice to read a little about a project and seeing the picture or pattern. I'll start. I went back to MT recently and my dad got a new DeWalt scroll saw. I've been looking at upgrading mine (an old craftsman 16") and I figured I'd try his out to see how well I like the DeWalt. I picked this pattern from SSWW&C to test it out. It was a fun project. I dabbed craft paint on the surface, leaving the inside cuts raw wood. Then I used antiquing paste wax to distress it a bit. You can find the pattern here: http://scrollsawer.com/2017/08/01/nr-festive-jack-o-lanterns/

    Sparrow Hawk

I finished this project this weekend. The pattern is by Jacob Fowler and found in the new book, Woodworker's Pattern Book. The upright is 1/2" Ash and the base is 3/4" Walnut. It stands 10 1/2" high. I used FD UR #1 and #3 blades. The finish is spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

  11. This is what a few stacks (150) ornaments looks like and.. well the sawdust was vacuumed a couple times throughout the day.. so this is maybe 1/2 that amount of sawdust on my DeWalt ( I always try to keep it clean.. normally don't let it get built up that much but was in a hurry as a custom order to do as well). 150 ornaments isn't bad for one days work but can't say that's the best I've done either.. These are for a wholesale order so unfortunately I'm only getting $10 each for them.. I typically get 16 each.. Now I need to get back to work.. sanding and finishing.. and another order just came in.. like I said before.. I start getting busy between Sept - end of Oct.. then it slams me with work from Nov. through the year and a couple weeks into Jan. I threw in a shot of my little corner where I work the most.. rest of shop is bandsaw, table saw, planner, jointer, spindle sander, belt sander etc ect.. LOL but this is scroll saw forum so I'll stick to that for now..

    Owl

Finished another Alex Fox pattern yesterday. Cut into 1/4 butternut using FD 2/0 spiral reverse blades. I am not a big fan of these blades, they left a very dirty cut. But once I started the project with them I went ahead and used them 'til the end(I bought 6 dozen...oops).

  14. I have been busy with my move, traveling and trying to stay out of my shop more then when I was in Heppner. But I have been working on four different projects so it has taken me time to get around to finishing them in a timely manner. I have however completed two of them today. One is for my grandson who is a captain in special forces in North Carolina and the other is for our church fund raiser silent auction where they will be paying off a debt they have had for awhile to build a school. This year they will be making the final payment and since we are new to Casa Grande, Arizona, I decided to make a little intarsia angle for the auction. I choose a pattern that I purchased several years ago and I have used it mainly to give to people that are either ill with a serious problem or just need something that I hoped would comfort them in a small way, knowing someone is praying and cares for them. So I modified the Judy Roberts angle pattern a little because I wanted to see what it would look like in a little different way and I cut a pattern of whom I can not recall the maker of the pattern, but I thought my grandson would like it as he just is finishing up his Special Forces training. 16. I have an event coming up the weekend after next, first time doing it... a dog show, here in my county. It's something like the 72nd annual event and I had no idea what to expect... Well, I just saw the "ring assignments"... It appears that there are about 560 dogs entering twice (both Saturday and then Sunday). And the list of about 112 different breeds participating is mind boggling. I take 63 breeds of dog puzzles with me normally and I'm going to have to expand that to try to cover as many as I can. There are several listed that I don't have patterns for, and some I've never even heard of. LOL This is going to be a wild one... http://www.hanoverkennelclub.net/2017_show_schedule_and_ring_assignments

  17. Okay I will dig one up from the past, don't have time to do something new before Halloween. This one I did for another contest on a pen making forum. I did use a scroll saw on it, to cut the bats. I made this pen buy cutting strips of black drain, waste, vent pipe. I glued three strips together, scrolled the bats in it. Glued 3 more strips together and scrolled more bats in different locations. I filled the bats with a mixture of red paint/epoxy. Once it was all cured, I glued the two stacks of strips together, then cut it to the lengths I needed to make the top and bottom of the pen. Put it on the lathe and turned the two pieces. Believe me I was really surprised it turn out as good as it did. I had no idea how the bats would look. It was all an experiment and really fun to do. I won that little contest....! (I think there were about 6 people participating). My daughter stole the pen from me! still drags it out every Halloween to use.

  20. Thanks for sharing. Growing up there was a man who did a little of everything farming, and ran a saw mill. This was before OSHA he had a big belt hooked on to the old John Deere well you guessed it his left arm got caught he was alone and lost the left arm above the elbow. did not slow him down and went back to farming and sawing and spearing Carp for fertilizer on the fields smelled but sure made the crops grow. He lived over a 100 as did his sisters who stayed with him. Sorry just old thoughts and reminiscing

  21. I just got home an hour ago, from picking up cut offs at my local saw mill. 3x3 and 3x5 pieces of Oak and Poplar some a foot long. What is too checked or cracked to turn, goes in the pile for the smoker grill or for the firewood pile at my local Lions Club's park. Tomorrow, he is cutting a pile of Eastern red cedar.

  26. Only problem, that dust port on the Ex is normally removed right after the hold down thingy. It is/was not a good or feasible setup. I'm strongly becoming a believer that good dust collection is the best insurance. It would save the bearing, the on/off switch that is often a problem and I don't know what else. I know I am becoming one of those soapbox dust collection guys... now that I finally have it.
    1 point
  27. Looks of that sawdust just made me think of another possible advantage of good dust collection. Could it help with the bearing problems being discussed? Keeping that dust out of the bearings has to be a good thing. What you show here would take me at least a week!

  29. I've not used the saw since late May. Most of June and July was spent getting the house back in shape after a nasty June hailstorm. New roof, entire house repainted, patio rebuilt and recovered, new fence and damage on vehicles repaired. Things are shipshape now. Sold the Spyder in June (getting too old to ride any great distance) so wife wants her half of the garage back. Who ever heard of a car in the garage. It should be called a car shed. So time was spent rearranging everything leaving my little shop totally disorganized. Yesterday was my first time back at the saw so this is my first little project. Wife thinks it is appropriate.

  43. I'm not too mad because I kind of expect things like this with a saw like I purchased.. while my saw was new in the box when I got it.. it is a old 1998 saw.. if that bearing was actually greased.. it may have dried up just setting all those years.. as grease does dry out.. and.. I feel even if I have to replace every bearing in the saw... I only paid $400 for it.. and I've made about $2000 worth of product to sell on this particular saw already.. I understand what you mean though.. but on the other hand.. you have to take into account.. most all bearings are made in china now.. and quality of bearings have drastically declined over the years..and it's not like Hawk made the bearings.. they just buy them from a bearing supplier.. at least they have the brains enough to use a sealed bearing.. unlike the dewalt, ex, jet, and seyco type saws..that use a open roller bearings.

  47. I would replace the entire pitman arm with a new assembly you can then play with the old one. I get all of my hardware from McMaster Carr if I can't find it locally. https://www.mcmaster.com/#shoulder-screws/=19mxdp7 If I remember correctly there is a large bearing in the end of the motor that should be looked at also. The end with the aluminum block. On my G4 there is an electrical connector between the motor and the controller. So another approach to pulling out the motor is to press out the pin in the upper arm, top of the pitman arm. Then drop the motor with the Pittman still attached . You can then work on your bench to remove the Pittman from the motor. A strap wrench or something else can be used to hold the counter weight.
