    Sparrow Hawk

I finished this project this weekend. The pattern is by Jacob Fowler and found in the new book, Woodworker's Pattern Book. The upright is 1/2" Ash and the base is 3/4" Walnut. It stands 10 1/2" high. I used FD UR #1 and #3 blades. The finish is spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

    Getting Back in Shape

I let too much time go without practicing the detailed stuff, so I cut a few simpler patterns to get my "feel" back, and then cut this. Kind of a tricky pattern, so only second time I've cut it. First time I cut this, it was by special request for a friend. This go around, I'll probably put this in the craft store to see if it sells. -----Randy

    Not Bragging

Hey boys n girls I cut a cake topper from a vinyl record today, I taped a piece of hardboard as a backer, and used that cut out as a sort of box to keep it from breakage. Merlin................

  8. There's way too much history to recap, but I wanted to let those that have been following the saga know that I finally got up the nerve to try using the Hawk again after @kmmcrafts and others provided some feedback and ideas about my issues with vibration and blade wobble. I just finished cutting 5 outlines of puzzle animals and the saw worked well. No blade wobble, virtually no vibration... I'm not getting overly excited yet as I need to cut actual puzzle pieces, but things look very promising. I'd been so disgusted with things that I hadn't touched the Hawk in a few weeks. If I'd still had the box that it came in, I'd have shipped it back weeks ago. So, maybe this is an omen and I end up a happy Hawk user. We'll see, but I wanted to let everyone know I'm still trying to get it to work out. If I feel brave tomorrow, I'll cut some complete puzzles. Iggy

    Unlimited Reactions

Howdy All! Been asking for it for a long time, and now the time is here. There is no longer a limit on the number of Likes or Reactions you can do in a day! Previously, I had a limit of 20/day. The idea was that if we were limited by the number of "Likes," we'd use them sparingly for the stuff we really like or agreed with. It also avoided the temptation to "Like" everything (which defeats the purpose). The more likes a thread or reply has, that would float to the top and easy to find the most interesting or valuable information on SSV. But now, things have changed the way they work and now we have reactions. Not only Likes, but Thanks, HaHa, Confused, and Sad. So it doesn't make much sense to limit them anymore. So I lifted all the restrictions on reactions. So knock yourself out, and click that reaction button in the corner. Have fun!

  11. This is what a few stacks (150) ornaments looks like and.. well the sawdust was vacuumed a couple times throughout the day.. so this is maybe 1/2 that amount of sawdust on my DeWalt ( I always try to keep it clean.. normally don't let it get built up that much but was in a hurry as a custom order to do as well). 150 ornaments isn't bad for one days work but can't say that's the best I've done either.. These are for a wholesale order so unfortunately I'm only getting $10 each for them.. I typically get 16 each.. Now I need to get back to work.. sanding and finishing.. and another order just came in.. like I said before.. I start getting busy between Sept - end of Oct.. then it slams me with work from Nov. through the year and a couple weeks into Jan. I threw in a shot of my little corner where I work the most.. rest of shop is bandsaw, table saw, planner, jointer, spindle sander, belt sander etc ect.. LOL but this is scroll saw forum so I'll stick to that for now..

    New (old) Hawk

I paid $350 for my 20+ year old Hawk. It was the original owner and he said that it might have 5 hours of use on it in that 20+ years.

  14. Okay I will dig one up from the past, don't have time to do something new before Halloween. This one I did for another contest on a pen making forum. I did use a scroll saw on it, to cut the bats. I made this pen buy cutting strips of black drain, waste, vent pipe. I glued three strips together, scrolled the bats in it. Glued 3 more strips together and scrolled more bats in different locations. I filled the bats with a mixture of red paint/epoxy. Once it was all cured, I glued the two stacks of strips together, then cut it to the lengths I needed to make the top and bottom of the pen. Put it on the lathe and turned the two pieces. Believe me I was really surprised it turn out as good as it did. I had no idea how the bats would look. It was all an experiment and really fun to do. I won that little contest....! (I think there were about 6 people participating). My daughter stole the pen from me! still drags it out every Halloween to use.

  16. When I cut an oval or round plaque, I start by cutting around the outside with a bandsaw. Make at least 6 "handles" to grip when rotating the piece. It makes your life a lot easier. When sawing a "handle", cut toward the piece & widen the cut enough that you can rotate around the bandsaw blade. Saw to the next "handle" & repeat. jerry

First photo is one of the many scrap bins.. he lets me pick stuff out of these.. but I rarely do because of the wood typically green.. needing planed etc.. and my time of running dumpster diving ( so to speak ) LOL and you only get whatever type wood he may be cutting that day.. I find I'm better ahead to just buy lumber all ready to go.. anyway this scrap ends up in a chipper to make wood chips for the local landscaping places. Next photo is of a cant - slat machine.. and the following photo is of a pallet of cants and then a pallet of slats.. you put the cant in one end and they come out the other as slats.. I think there are around 5 bandsaws in this machine that you can change their location so if you wanted you could adjust it for making 2x4's instead of slats.. Next is a sawdust pile from the mill itself.. that pile is only from this morning.. Next is the log deck and the de-barker.. but the photo doesn't really show much here.. I took some video of the outfit and the actual mill sawing logs etc.. but I need to get my son to help me edit the clips and help me upload these.. if anyone has any interest.. Next photo is just logs.. he says those will be completely gone by days end.. I intended to get more photos and video.. like to have gotten a picture of one of the bandsaw blades.. they are about 10 inch wide blades and maybe 1/8" thick maybe bigger.. been a while since I've seen one.. even though I walked right by them today Anyway, I got video of the sawmill itself sawing a log.. the chipper and the de-barker machine.. if anyone would have an interest in seeing any of it I'll see if my son can help me get a video up.. also my uncle ( lives next door to me ) has a mill that was built back in the 1800's.. of coarse it's been updated to a modern 6 cylinder truck motor to power it.. I could walk over there and get a few pictures too if interested?

The handles are a great idea Jerry. I usually leave the outside edge until last but it is always a bit tense knowing you can stuff up an otherwise completed piece at the last minute. Still, that's scrolling I suppose! Rob

  22. Yes Kevin the mills were here in Muskegon. My dad's mill was a Bellsaw brand mill with a 52" inserted tooth circular blade. I started working on the mill at a very young age. In fact back then it was powered by a 1948 Buick straight eight engine. In 1958 we got it hooked up to 480 volt 3 phase power. In 1965 I started as a sawyer at Wenting Manufacturing on a state of the art circular blade semi automated mill where I sat in a glass booth and pushed buttons and pulled levers to do all the operations I did on my dad's mill manually. It was quite a step up but the basic principals were the same and absolutely no comparison on the amount of production.

    New (old) Hawk

Bought a 1999 model Hawk for $100 several months ago for a spare machine. looks like new. Took my DeWalt in for repairs yesterday and just set up the Hawk. So far so good. Just have to get used to the air blower on the right side and my dust collection on the left. Waxed the table and aligned the blade/table. Cuts 3/4" hardwood puzzles nicely with Pegas Modified Geometry blades. bb

    New (old) Hawk

That's awesome! I also bought a new one (still boxed ) 1998 back in May this year.. Took me some time to get used to the clamps and getting the correct tension etc.. You did better than I did as I gave $400 for mine.. Gave $100 for my older model (1993) used lightly.. that one works OK but the motor doesn't give the faster 1700 spm... you wouldn't think that extra 200 spm would be that big of a deal but it does for me anyway..

  27. I have an event coming up the weekend after next, first time doing it... a dog show, here in my county. It's something like the 72nd annual event and I had no idea what to expect... Well, I just saw the "ring assignments"... It appears that there are about 560 dogs entering twice (both Saturday and then Sunday). And the list of about 112 different breeds participating is mind boggling. I take 63 breeds of dog puzzles with me normally and I'm going to have to expand that to try to cover as many as I can. There are several listed that I don't have patterns for, and some I've never even heard of. LOL This is going to be a wild one... http://www.hanoverkennelclub.net/2017_show_schedule_and_ring_assignments

  32. Part of the process.. I typically pre-sand and cut plywood blanks to 7.5" x 11" and then apply shelf liner to one.. then stack 4-6 below the top one and tape them together along the sides and ends.. then apply my self adhesive ( full sheet shipping labels ) printed pattern to that.. then pre-drill the holes and cut away..
