  1. I used Alder wood for the first time on the "Holy Night" and Birchbark's "Peace" and really like how it looks after the oil hits it. Thanks for the pattern Birchbark! Love it!

  2. A friend of mine emailed me this morning with an interesting challenge. This guy is one of the best wood turners I know. He has only been at it a few years, but an example of his skill, the first local show he showed a piece in, won best of show and most popular. It was actually a carver show but they let the local turning club join in. He specializes in segmented turning. I posted one of his project on here a while back, a tea pot and cups. He wants us to do a joint piece. I would do some blocks with inlays, he could put into a segmented piece. The attachment is a pictue of the example of what he has in mind. It is not one he did. We haven't discussed what the theme would be yet. I have not done inlay before.... this is pretty intricate stuff. I think I will spend most the winter learning and practicing inlays. But I am really excited about it. Hope it works out.... We haven't discussed who gets the piece when (if) done.

  3. I mentioned some time ago about having a request for making a Hamsa box, (Carole Rothman design) for a pole dance instructor in Brazil> I finally finished. This was a real struggle for me, I and Cocobolo wood do not get along. But it is done. Like mention the main wood is Cocobolo, the veneer is Curly Maple. The red part of the eye is painted some other veneer and the black middle is a piece of Water Buffalo horn I turned. The last one of these I will make and the last Cocobolo I will sand. Well at least for a while. I hope it goes with her tattoo!

    1968 Mustang Clock

Cut from 5/8 cherry.. modified Steve Good pattern. Left out the text on this one.. If I cut it again I'll change the text to just say Mustang rather than how Steve had it as 1968 Mustang GT Fastback.. Not a big fan of putting the year on these because some cars I've done are the same body but customers want X year instead.. so from now on to keep things a little more simple.. I plan to leave the year off of them..

    Golden Knight

My son is a big fan so I cut this for him tonight. The look on his face when I brought it upstairs when it was freshly cut was priceless... Gonna make the kid finish it though...

    My Noel

Did it using popular that had a lot of green in it. When I removed the pattern the paper stayed on the snow flake. I liked the white so just left it on an covered it with finish.

  12. Runa, please use this forum. Before you purchase your next "upgrade" saw, ask, ask, the people here. We have all been through this. My first saw was a Craftsman that I had to get on my knees to work the setup on the lower clamp. It took two tools to change a blade. I finally made a base for the saw with a hinge so I could life it up on it's side to change blades. Now, I had this Craftsman for years. I had to keep it, my wife bought it for me for a Christmas present... And, I made some things using it. But, when I got serious about scrolling, I knew I had to get something better. There are good buys on used saws out there,,, just ask for opinions before buying. I can almost guarantee somene on this forum can give you good advice on the saw, good and bad... Again, please to not take offense, I am only trying to help... Lots of experience here... use it.

  13. Nicely cut. The only suggestion that I would have is with your first piece, on the name courage I would cut the letter O in this manner..(shown in the enclosed image). this way you have a letter and not a hole. with other letters like most B b Dd g Oo Pp Qq's if you do not leave a small space the round, enclosed parts of the letters become holes instead.. Not criticizing but just pointing this out so that it might help you. Nice work. Dick heppnerguy

lol Paul, now you tell me, if I had known that you were only joking I wouldn't have left such a long reply. That proves to me, that I should leave shorter replies. Len

    Interesting Challenge

He is a good guy, a friend, I feel great that he asked me to work with him on it. That's enough. We will have a great time doing. I was just joking on who gets it.

  16. Paul, That is totally awesome. As talented as you are I am sure inlay will be easy for you............it's really not that hard.

    Interesting Challenge

Paul, it sounds like a great challenge. Be sure to post the outcome. And make enough piece so he can make two of them.

  18. Very nicely done thanks for sharing. If you are putting a backer piece on the first cutting. If you wanted you may be able to take the same wood you used and the O part of the pattern on the wood and re cut it but as Dick said leaving the two attachments then just cut the attachment carefully at the inside top and bottom where they attach then glue in place on the backer board. Just a thought not sure how it would look.

  19. Really super job on your cutting! Your choice of patterns is nice too.

  20. Sam, If I were designing the pattern I would choose a font that had these not cut areas already there but if I was using a font. like say a script font and there was an obvious fall out area like in the above 'O" situation, I would probably create the needed attachment in the pattern program I was using to make the pattern. However if it was someone else's pattern and they had overlooked the letter turning into a hole when cut, I would probably just draw a stopping point on the printed pattern to remind me that I needed to not cut it there. I hope that makes sense to you. If not you can PM me and I will be happy to draw you an example Dick heppnerguy

  21. Here is one thing to remember, when using smaller blades they will not take side pushing and twisting the wood too well.. I am not saying cutting corners but rather kind of side to side stuff.. they will break easier then the heavier blades but at the same time they are not as aggressive, making them easier to control. So go for it. and have fun. You are doing really well Dick heppnerguy

  22. Very nice cuttings Runa you are doing very well. Yeah if you can get the pinless blades to work you can do very fine detail fretwork. Thanks for showing us.

  25. The only thing I can see is the "O". Everything else looks great to me. Great job on these.

  26. excellent work, runa! as mentioned, i would encourage you to invest in some stencils & practice the O's. Like Hawkeye said, use bullseye zinser spray shellac on them, & leave them be. keep about 10" - 12" away from your project when spraying, or it'll glob up. 3 light coats should be plenty. You're doin' great! keep makin' sawdust!

  27. An order came in when my saw was down and i completed it and now the customer isn't picking it up for some reason.$10 bucks gets me that much closer to paying off the jeep i just acquired, silver glitter on the isa name loaded up as i didn't have a silver base to spay.i am swamped with things to organize to get to the rattle cans. What's happening is every job requires something different and to get what i need just makes the mess even worse till i'm ready to scream.lol I realized i didn't cut the tail end of the gaby name as i do this so turning the name cutting it i t doesn't break it off .Sometimes i forget.but i caught it in time and fixed it.I know i know ,No pictures ,Didn't happen for the peanut gallery, lol

    Back from the abyss

It has been some time since I have been here as well as being at my saw. I got up in penmaking and drifted a bit. But as life goes I have a renewed interest in scrolling again. I have been searching for interesting patterns and such, hopefully something there is a market for in my area. retirement/disability is kinda skinny. Anyway I just wanted to drop a note and say hello.

  47. The screws that support pinless dint come with it and they are discontinued. They are not regular screws but taper off. We are going to file the regular screw to see if that works. I got some pinless no 3 to try intricate design and cant wait to try it. The blade looks so delicate though and i worry i dont have enough experience to use them.

  49. Runa that is nice. I mean they are real nice. You could finish them with Watco Danish Oil that you can but at a big box store. I also like Bullseye spray shellac in a can. Just put 2 or 3 light coats on and your through.

  50. Glad to hear that the saw is running again. Bearings are very inexpensive in the overall scheme of things. The lower bearing on the Pitman arm is 3/8 by 7/8 and this is just one source. less than $5. https://bearingsdirect.com/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=9R6&submit_search= http://www.vxb.com/EEB3-2Z-Dia-9-525mm-OD-22-225mm-7-144mm-p/eeb-3-2z.htm I have bought lots of bearings from VXB and have been very pleased.
