Monarch on a Flower
jscottj and 8 others reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Several weeks ago, the last of the Monarch Butterflies started their journey south to Mexico and the last one left my area. I really like them and have planted Milkweed and many other flowers to attract them. Since they are gone, I decided that I needed to make my own Monarch on a Flower for winter months. The pattern for the Monarch came from Steve Good’s website. I used the pattern to cut out two wings from 1/8” Baltic Birch Plywood and carefully sanded the wings. The wings were painted black. Now, I just needed to put the orange color in the wings. I thought about doing an orange inlay but with the number of parts and the small size knew it would be very difficult for me. I finally decided on filling the holes in the wings with epoxy dyed orange. I took me too many trials but finally ended up using a medium setting epoxy with just a touch of orange Rit Dye powder. The body for the Monarch was a small piece of walnut which I turned on the lathe. Small holes in the head and paint brush bristles were glued in for the antenna. Gluing the wings on the body was one of the most difficult parts. I marked on the body where the wings would go and drilled several shallow small diameter holes and similar holes on the edge of the wings. The holes would make the epoxy have a greater grip. I cut a V-Shape in a 2x4 block which was the angle I wanted the wings and used it to hold the body and wings while the epoxy hardened. I also drilled a small hole on the bottom of the body for the wire to hold the Monarch. The flower is made pine shavings. These shaving were about 1-1/2” wide and on the thick side. These were glued around a short dowel to make the flower. The leaves were also made of pine shavings. The base for the Flower and Monarch is Red Oak and made so that an Acrylic 5-sided box would fit over it and protect it from dust and damage.9 points -

Halloween Challenge
bradnjackie and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
How correct is Scrappile. When I was at his house and saw the beautifully done items that he had cut, I had to go home and challenge myself to up my level of cutting. So I did. I went home and took out a spiral and worked with it more and soon found that I could cut things that I had been shying away from. Now I feel confident that I can cut almost any pattern and even find myself looking for things that are more challenging. One hole at a time... correct analysis. Thanks Paul for being so good at what you do and for becoming a good friend to me. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

Just do it, Rob. One hole at a time. You can, it will surprise you, only a little more difficult than ones not so detailed, and they take a little longer.2 points -

Miniature Birdhouse Tree Display
Lucky2 reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Some time ago, I displayed my Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments on a wrought iron twig tree display. The manufacturer closed their doors and finally someone started listing them again. They will only sell wholesale, so we decided to stock them at ArtCrafters. A great way to display your miniature birdhouse ornaments at craft fairs. If interested, message me.1 point -

Blimey ain't seen that for while. Great cut. Roly1 point -
Here is a self framing pattern I posted in "New Patterns". In retrospect, I should have changed the angle to 4 degrees, not 6 as shown on the pattern. That cut was made with a FD UR # 3. Blade width will also be a factor.1 point

If you could tel us what went wrong, we might be able to help with a solution. I would guess you had problems with the thin wood breaking while carving. The answer to that is to use thicker wood, or very shallow carving. Using razor sharp tools is a given. Scroll saw projects tend to have a lot of short grain sections, and care needs to be taken to not break these off.1 point -

Kragax, your right, I add usually add depth by using veining. But then again, if the veining doesn't give me the effect I'm looking for, I will sometimes round over the edges of the veining lines. It takes quite a while to do this with the veining lines being so fine, but it gives it the look I'm going for. Len.1 point -
The topic title made me wonder if people were setting on the toilet cutting.. I've never hear of this term before with scroll sawing.. other than stress relief cutting..1 point

I bet you have to add one more "0" to that price... I mean the top of the line Hegner is $3350, and it is somewhat smaller and a little less powerful that that machine!1 point

I think you are very correct about the advertising.. I also think they are a well built saw.. I think DeWalt got so popular because it was sold in big box stores.. plus DeWalt built a name and reputation years ago.. so people see a deWalt tool and automatically think quality tool.. however I've bought some off brand made in china tools that had help up better than some of my DeWalt stuff..LOL.. I think Dewalt is now made in china too maybe? I don't see a lot of post over the years about Hegners or Hawks.. dominantly DeWalt, Ex's and then the low end stuff.. so..1 point

Who can tell me anything about this brand?
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
IIRC, the owner told us that they used to demonstrate at all the woodworking shows and scrollsaw gatherings. I don't think they show at as many these days, but then again, there aren't as many of those kinds of events anymore. Occasionally I see one of their adds in a magazine. Advertising costs a lot of $$ and they are a pretty small company.1 point -

I can sharpen the larger drill bits but the small ones are too cheep to mess with When it burnes the hole you are going much too fast. Drilling small holes in ply wood requires a slower speed than useal it's the glue thats is the big problem. IKE1 point

I also drill and back then drill some more in the same hole, to keep the flutes clear as I am drilling, if the wood is very thick. Drill Doctor is a pretty good bit sharpener. But on little bits it is not worth the time, to my, I just buy more bits.1 point

This is a work in progress that I'm doing in my shop. Thought you might be interested even if it's not scrolled. One of our model buildings at the train park actually fell apart. So here is the replacement structure underway. Notice the gallon of paint lower right for size reference. Can you guess what the structure is? OK, good guess! Drawn in Aspire, 1/2 inch ply, 1/8 ball nose for scribing, 1/4 end mill for openings and cutouts, 1/16 tapered ball nose for details from sintra. Lot's more to do but a decent start so far. Enjoy., Russ1 point -
