  1. I completed this today. This is one I have wanted to do for a long long time. Them, my son requested it, and he has done a lot for me and has been a big supporter of my scrolling, so I decided I had to do it for him. Here is the rub. Kinda like the recent thread on "High" and "Low" of scrolling. The "low is, there are only a few patterns for this picture. I ordered what I though was the "best" of the ones offered. When I received the pattern I was,,, let down. It just didn't look all that great to me. But I was committed so I decided to cut it anyway. The "high" today I finished cutting and removed the pattern/tape from the wood, and I am very happy with how it turned out.. It looks more detailed than the pattern looked like it would. I want to finish cleaning it up, put a finish on and make a backer and frame it. I only hope I can frame it like I want. I am not great at framing pictures. "The Last Supper" 24" long x 8" high. Cut in 1/4" Maple. Used 3/0 FD new spiral blade,

I've done this cutting a few times over the years, but haven't cut it for a while. I'm trying to get my inventory up, and folks seem to like this one, so I cut this today, and got halfway through another one just like it. The pattern is by Steve Good and is cut on a Kennedy Half Dollar. Steve actually featured a prior cutting of this on his Blog a while back. ------Randy

This is a plaque I designed and scrolled for a dear friend. The plaque is cut in .45" Jatoba and is finished with danish oil and wipe-on poly. The font used for the word Redeemer is Parchment with massive simplification for the capital R to make it scrollable. By comparison to my last project, this was a relatively easy pattern to cut. The plaque measured 12.5 x 7 5/8. If there is interest, I will upload the pattern. (Edit: I have uploaded the inkscape file pattern)

  6. This is the first puzzle that I cut from Ash hardwood. Will not break like other hardwoods when dropped. You have to cut very slow because the wood is very hard. Recommended for uses where high strength, stiffness and good appearance are desired.

    My two day show

Just got home from the second day of a two day show. This annual show is a Christmas Botique that has been going on for thirty years at a local church here in Moorpark, California. It is all hand crafted items. There was even a guy selling beautiful hand crafted cutting boards. This was my forth or fifth year. My average sales. Is approximately $700 each day. Yesterday, I sold $1003, and today, I hit my average of $700. I don't post a lot in the bragging section because I know I will be posting pictures of my shows. So, here they are.

  12. I am a perfectionist (If you don't believe it, ask my sweet wife). The slightest imperfection on a difficult piece will scream at me until my ears hurt. Have thrown away a number of things that a lot of people would have kept. I'm darn careful with what I put my name on. It's a curse that I wouldn't wish on anyone. Highs - Give a large part of my work to the Stephan Ministry at our Church. They give them to select people that come to the Church suffering from depression, dealing with the loss of a loved one, divorce, medical problems, etc, etc. We hand them to the Church secretary & she gives them out. We don't know who gets them, but she hugs us and says, "You have no idea how many lives you've touched." Makes it worthwhile.

  19. I was watching a show that I love to watch and is called Handcrafted in America. On there was a gentleman that makes watches by hand. It showed a quick glimpse into what he goes through to make all the components and painstaking labor to put it together and work flawlessly. The (pun) time and effort is tedious to say the least. It got me thinking of what we do here and that is scrolling. Even if you are relatively new at it or an old timer such as myself there always are those highs and lows that come with the artform. The longer you do it the more of these you get to be part of. I thought it would be fun to list some of these highs and lows and I am sure we all will say oh yea I agree with that. What we do is tedious also and time consuming and you grow into the love of it or else we move on. It is a hobby not for all. Patience plays a huge role and at some times it can test our inner selfs. Lets say a high is just like having ******* a candy bar (what did you think I was going to say) and a low is like denting your car. Here are some examples to get things rolling and hope others will jump in. Highs Sawing along and you decide you need to change the blade. The first cut with the new blade is like heaven. Picked out a pattern that had so many cuts you thought you would never finish but you make that final cut and stand back and you are proud. Had someone compliment your work and go on and on about how well it looks and maybe even buys a piece. You find that perfect piece of wood to work with in both looks and in cutting ability. Not all woods cut well. Lows Put hours in on a piece cutting many frets and when done accidently drop it and it breaks into a million pieces. Now that is the low of lows to me. (we all have been there) Spend many hours making things and go to a show and nothing sells. Cutting an intricate pattern and within the board are hard grain lines that constantly throw your blade off course. Had this with oak boards because of the heavy grains. Cutting fine details and suddenly you sneeze and there goes a fine cut. OK that should get things rolling. There are many many more and we all have lived them. Lets see what you come up with. Hopefully all our highs and lows even out and we continue promoting this great hobby. Happy Scrolling.

    Desert Scene

Seems like I have been posting one of my pine needle creations about once a year so here is the one for 2017 that I just finished for my wife. We live in the Arizona desert so it is appropriate. The scroll saw pattern is by Sue May. Diameter is approximately 14".

  22. Great, great job. I've gotten the same feeling about patterns. When I look at most patterns for the first time, it's like "Really, it looked so much better in the catalog". For some reason they just don't look good on paper. But once you have it cut and remove the paper, it always looks amazing in wood grain. Kinda makes finishing a tough pattern all the more special.

  23. I have an idea for a word art of "give thanks with a grateful heart" I came up with this, but not sure about it yet. I think the spacing is off or something, I can't quite put my finger on it. I thought I would post it as an idea for someone. Maybe another designer can do a better job with it.

    Chairs for children

We just made up the pattern after consulting a, chairs for children, sizing chart. These chairs are going to be decorated by local artists so we made them with lots of area, for decorative painting, on the sides. It took the seven of us about three hours to assemble the pieces, that I had cut out already. We learned a bit about what works well and what does not, in assembling these chairs. Today I remade/ tweaked the plywood patterns a bit to make it easier to assemble them in the future. Last time they asked for these chairs was 2006. {Lost the pattern)

  41. I did a show yesterday and had a totally opposite experience. I have done this same show for 8 straight years and my sales have increased every year. This year's sales were 10% higher then last year. One of the organizers told me the estimated number of attendees was between 1,000 and 1,100. They came to buy. I do not want to brag but my booth fee was $40.00 and I grossed almost 40 time that plus I have orders to fill that will pay on delivery. I use a Square so I can take credit cards and that has helped a lot. Over a 1/3 of my sales were credit card sales. Top sellers were nativity puzzles, gift card holders(based on a Steve Good design), letter angles (Sue Mey design), and bird house ornaments.

    Pretty Stoked!!

I shut down for the Iowa winter. Unable (and not really interested) in heating the garage. Will start giving free lesson at our local Veterans Liberty Center. Have made a 12" x 12" pattern attached to luan ply for practice. Straight lines, circles, ovals & scroll shapes. Was thinking that if one or more wanted to continue, I'd make a pattern of intersecting word art with their name. Thought that would be a good confidence builder, plus something they would be glad to show off.

  43. I made this with MS Word. Cut with scissors outside the lines. Cut out a 1/4 circle at each corner with a hole puncher. Lay it face down on wax paper and apply Elmers glue, spread with a credit card. Scroll Sign with border.doc
