    Portrait for a friend

Hi everyone, I just finished this piece today from a pattern that Paul (Grampa) made for me. I have to give Paul a lot of credit for making this pattern for me. He didn't have much to work with but somehow he did his magic and came up with this. These pattern makers that we have in here don't get enough credit. Thanks again Paul. I'm sure my friend will love this. He doesn't know I'm making this for him.

  3. Inspired by Danny, I scanned the pattern and cut it today. The background is black ash, the stable is poplar, the holy family is mahogany, the shepherd is walnut, so is the donkey, and the lamb is maple. For added pizzazz I threaded tiny LED lights through all cuttings in the background piece. Hope I did as well as Denny. ;-)

  4. Found time to scroll and good things came about.I defrosted my refrigerator and my ryobi battery charger was underneath and got soaked and ruined.I looked on offer up and craigs list but no one responded. Then the warehouse complex repair guy came around and we talked.he's locking out 2 tenants for 2 months of no pay.then it dawned on me that he may have a old battery charger for my ryobi 18v.Sure enough.so in the mean time i finished up a manger box an angel puzzle and a Christmas tree puzzle and gave them to him.His wife paints I'll be getting the charger and 6' saw tomorrow .thank you Jesus! the sleigh is for the lady that works where i get my mail,I'm making head way in my shop to get organized!

As we remember this Veteran's day, let's also remember our firemen, police and all emergency services. It's good to know when we dial 911 there is someone there to help.

I agree, thank you all that are Veterans, past , present and future. I had the privilege and honor of serving in the United States Marine Corps... 1963 - 1966. Viet Nam vet, 5/1965 - 2/1966, Chu Lai. Even more proud of my son, retired Navy. 22 years. Fighter Pilot. Started in the F-14 Tomcat, probably the most beautiful fighter jet the Navy ever had, then transitioned to the F-18/ SuperHornet, when they started decommissioning the F-14. He served two tours in the Middle East. I think I enjoyed his career as much as he did.. What a career he had. What he wanted to do since he was 11 years old and he never wavered from that goal... Made my life very easy raising him.. I solute him!

This year I am asking people to consider not watching NFL games this weekend. African-Americans certainly have a good point. Often treated unfairly, and have a legal right to protest. However, a football field is not the time or place for that. If you disrespect our flag & anthem, you might as well spit in the face of a person who is or has fought for your right of Freedom of Speech. Also, go up to the grieving members of a fallen soldier and slap them in the face as long as you are at it. jerry, Army volunteer 1959-1961 (1 year north of the Artic Circle)

  8. Good morning everyone (or good evening for our fine folks on the other side this big blue ball). I was sitting at my saw last night and kept thinking about how much being a member of this site has really made me fall in love with this art form. I bought my first saw last march on a whim and joined this site shortly after. I haven't looked back since. The knowledge I have gained from everyone here has given me the confidence to try things I never would have thought of on my own. I make it a point to look here everyday to see what useful tip is being discussed and not many days have gone by without me learning something new (or at least getting a chuckle from Jerry' s cartoons). So to everyone that has ever posted ANYTHING on this site, thank you.

  10. Well I ordered from Lowes with free shipping but they took a week to ship it and now I find out they are slow boating it to me so it will take 4-6 weeks! I can't wait that long.... So I ordered from Amazon with priority shipping and it will be here tomorrow then I will just return the one from Lowes when it arrives. I've got an itch and I can't wait to start some scroll work! Intarsia has really captured my interest, but I'll start with the simple basics

I will add my thanks to the fellow Veterans and thank you one and all who served and fought so I have the rights that are so important to our democracy. I particularly take this time to give praise to God that I still have my father alive and well. I value his advise and his mentoring. At the age of 95 he still gives great advise which I take. He is able to live on his own but moved in with my niece to help her out. He is a disabled Veteran as he says a 100 percenter He came home as a Staff Sgt with a bronze star, and 2 purple hearts. On his behalf and my own you are welcome. Capt. US Army Nurse Corps. 1971-1983

Thanks to all who served. There are countries today that execute people who show disrespect to their country. The freedom we all have is due partly, or rather mostly, to our veterans. Thanks again. USAF, Master Sergeant, 1986 - 2006

I, too, want to say thanks to all the vets who have served our country admirably. They are the glue that binds and protects us. I also ask that this weekend we boycott the NFL to let them know just how we feel about their foolishness. Ray

  17. If you look close at your blade you will see that only a small amount is actually being used.I myself cut 1/4 wood.so after awhile when my blade isn't cutting great,I will remove the blade snip off a small portion of the bottom, then reclamp it and continue cutting I can double my blades life.I have been doing this for over a year.I do this with all my blades.

  18. Thank you for the recommendation FDUR #3 came in and i am able to cut so much better and cleaner and faster because i dont have to keep replacing the broken blade
    2 points
  19. My method is simple, when I am having problems, change the blade. When I remove a blade put it in the trash can.

  20. I typically start every project with a new blade. I like the fresh start. I keep about 5 or 6 blades on an old butter dish, and the rest are in packages in one of the drawers. I really think of blades as disposable and don't think much of getting rid of them when they outlive their usefulness. If I don't want to use a blade on the next project, I toss it.

  21. I have a system for used blades. I remove them from the saw, and place them on a counter next to the saw. I know I will remember what they are and then I immediately forget. If you were to come to my workshop, you would see a pile of used blades sitting by my saw, that I know I will someday figure out what they are. That's my system, has worked for me for a long time.

  22. To echo Stevan, I find the Pegas blade more aggressive. I tried them when I was a novice cutter and quite frankly--they got away from me. After more time cutting and getting a better feel for blade/wood/speed, I could handle that blade much more effectively. I would hate a fairly new scroller to get a blade they can't handle and it is based 100% on personal experience.

  23. I made this 4 years ago from a cedar hope chest someone thru out 18" tall 5/8's thick.you should have seen my eye upon seeing it on the side of the road GOLD! I wanted to make something rare and desirable so i could buy a new dw788 or used doesn't matter Well in the mean time i aquired 9 more dw788's and still have the double star of David clock. It's very precious to me .My friend that has never had an additude problem, cursted me out or any bad thing is getting married Jan 15th.His wife to be is from Israel so this will be theirs as a wedding gift.I gave a can of satin spray minwax so he can get more or gloss from the big box store if he choses,And the name was supposed to be gray but i don't have ,it's for the er nurse so she said paint it so it will look good,so white base and red glitter paint and red glitter on top of that,

  24. My scrolling involves word-art plaques which means many very precise tight turns and the need for making straight lines straight and long smooth curves smooth. I have found that the angle I need to use to feed the blade changes (gets greater). I attribute this to the torque you apply to the blade during a tight turn. When this becomes noticeable - I change the blade. Given the time and energy I put into the piece, the cost of the blade is negligible to the cost of making a fatal error. As far as which blade, I tried them all and then tried the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse. These fit my style and, for me, ended the question of "Which Blade To Use?"

  25. Well, let me tell ya's, at 8:30 a.m. I hopped out of bed, put on my shorts and a tee shirt. Flip flops on my feet. I went out and got the paper. It was a bit overcast but nice and warm. I may complain a lot about the politics here in California but it's all about the weather. I guess that's why folks are lining up to live here in a basic home that starts at about $600K. Ray

  29. I'd think since the baby oil is no more than mineral oil it'd be the same quantity as those I mention above.. I'm not sure on the exact size of my containers I use.. but my mixture makes enough to fill up 2 and just a small amount in the third container.. Thinking the containers are pint sized ones..

  34. Great post Chunk. I agree that this is a great forum. I used to belong to a railroad forum where a lot of "flaming" was the norm. I don't even bother going there anymore. I also check out the Village almost every day, however it's rare that I give my two cents, mainly cuz someone has already said what I was thinking. (Which is kind of scary in and of itself. Big smile). I have learned a lot from all of you, thank you. Again, great post Chunk

    Cute and Simple...

Ha! You give me much more credit than you should. I laid 8 of them out on a board and that was simply how the first one I cut turned out and I snapped pictures of it. I plan on selling them un-oiled allowing them to be painted if folks like.

  40. For myself if the blade still has some life left I will put it on the wooden platform, 4" x 4" with self stick magnet strips and the platform is attached to the top of the saw and it is numbered 2/0 up to 9. This is also where I keep fresh blades that I will be using for what ever I am cutting at the time. This has worked for me but normally I discard the blade after cutting the project and if it shows a dark blue on the blade which to me is starting or is dull. Erv

  44. Ray lots of things to consider above. I will add my 2 cents. I keep all my new blades in half inch PVC pipe capped at both ends in a holder with several holes large enough for the pipe and label the size with a black marker. Like most here if I have a blade that I think is done I put in the big plastic Planters peanut container with a hole in the top for discard. Holds about 6 months of blades to toss out. The ones I think have life left I have plastic containers which were full of mini M&M's which you get to eat and then the tube is just big enough for a blade to fit. I label it with the blade number and set it on the bench but instead of having blades setting and hoping to know the size It is known. I always keep a few no use ones in the containers and label used and then they can be used to just cut a piece of wood to size before cutting the actual pattern.

  46. Ray after you have been at this addiction for a while you will get the feel for when you need to trash a blade. I have a magnetic strip on the frame of my saw that I will occasionally put a blade that is still cutting well but I changed for another size or type. I do not use any type of timing method most of the time I can tell by how the blade is performing when its time to trash it.
    1 point
  47. You are probably right on. I guess once I figure out what blades to stick with, it would be silly to have a bunch of "sort of used" blades hanging around. They are cheap enough to just not hassle with them. Thanks. Makes perfect sense. R

  48. When its worn out the blade is hard to make follow the line and turns are worse. I seldom have a blade that I keep after use unless I am doing another project that will use the same blade. I put my "dead" blades in an old parmaesan cheese container then when its full I trash it and get another container. Blades are 25 or 30 cents each not the most expensive part of this hobby/obsession. Fredfret Wichita, Ks

  50. Here's my crack at our Giving Thanks scroll saw challenge. I made this word art project inspired by scripture. From 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In all things, give thanks...” Even outside of the Thanksgiving holiday, I think it’s a lovely reminder to be grateful for the things we have. Here's a quick video of the project coming together. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon. The pattern is available here.
