Big Canoe Woodworkers Club Donates 100 Puzzles to “Toys for Tots” November 10, 2017 On opening day for the Pickens County(GA)Toys for Tots program, the Big Canoe Woodworkers Club donated 100 wooden puzzles for the local Toys for Tots campaign. Several members made the puzzles under the guidance of Brian Beals with Pickens Puzzles LLC, also a member of the club. Others in the club donated wood for the puzzles. Pictured are Chuck Fleming with the Toys for Tots program, Claude Drevet, Terry Nicholson, Brian Beals, Cecil Schneider, and Amy Brannon-Hamby with the Toys program. This is my solution for salvaging thin stock. I ran into a bunch of imperfections in the 8/4 Jatoba I was working with which would have rendered useless nearly 3 feet of 8/4 x 5" stock. After cutting away the imperfections, I ended up with 6 pieces that were 3 - 4" wide x 15.5" long. The pieces are just over 1/4" thick and trying to clamp them with traditional methods would be impossible. So, I spent the day making a clamping board. This consist of 24" x 24" x 1.5" MDF (two 3/4" pieces glued together) with formica top and a plywood bottom to reinforce the stiffness of the MDF. I used a 1 3/8 forstner bit for the holes and 1 3/8" poplar dowel for the stops. The wedges are cut from hickory with a 5 degree angle. The gluing cauls are fabricated from oak but you could just as easily use pine. The clamping cauls have one perfectly straight edge and the other edge is curved. Youtube has several videos showing how to use the clamping board and how to fabricate the cauls. The surface of the formica has a thin coat of paste wax applied. You use this device by applying the glue to the edges of your thin stock, pressing them together and then use the wedges above and below the cauls to apply pressure. You can then use a piece of scrap lumber to protect the surface of your work piece while you tap the pieces flush with each other on the surface and along the edges The multiple holes in the clamping board are to make it easy to vary the width of the panel being glued. Using multiple wedges on top allow you to easily and quickly adjust for different widths. The final picture is the finished panel as it came off the clamping board - no planing nor sanding. I have to say, after trying to do this with traditional clamps, this method makes gluing thin pieces a breeze. The flat surface of the clamping board keeps everyting registered as you clamp.6 points

Hi, Can't seem to figure out how to get hold of a moderator on this site. I now have my king/excelsior 30 and as part of a deal I struck with King Canada I will be doing a blog review on it over the next couple months. I would like the mods to create a new thread for the review of the saw! And my early impressions of the saw are extremely favourable, I have cut a few pieces on it and its a joy to operate! thanks3 points

Giving Thanks To The Village
amazingkevin and 2 others reacted to Chunkthekid for a topic
Good morning everyone (or good evening for our fine folks on the other side this big blue ball). I was sitting at my saw last night and kept thinking about how much being a member of this site has really made me fall in love with this art form. I bought my first saw last march on a whim and joined this site shortly after. I haven't looked back since. The knowledge I have gained from everyone here has given me the confidence to try things I never would have thought of on my own. I make it a point to look here everyday to see what useful tip is being discussed and not many days have gone by without me learning something new (or at least getting a chuckle from Jerry' s cartoons). So to everyone that has ever posted ANYTHING on this site, thank you.3 points -

lol Kevin, we never set our thermostats any higher then that. We usually have them set at 15, but every so often we do turn them up to 17 for some extra warmth. All I usually wear around the house, is a t-shirt and a pair of work pants. I never was a heat person, I loved all of the years I worked in the high north. I can always properly dress for the cold, no matter how cold it gets. I actually enjoy being out in the coldest temperatures of the year, I find it to be very refreshing. We've been known to have bar-b-ques in the winter, why not, it only takes a little longer to cook a steak. When I used to snowmobile, we had small bar-b-ques mounted on skis we used to use on our long day trips. There was four of us who always snowmobiled together, I towed the bar-b-que, Clinton hauled the food trailer. Dale towed the trailer with the liquids we would consume on our trip, and Kerry usually brought up the rear trailer with the tents and sleeping bags. Oh how I miss those days. No my friend, you can have your heat. I had a very hard hot summer that I suffered through, we're just starting to get into my favorite season of the year. Len3 points

I signed up for an event 4 blocks from my house, Ribfest... It's usually held in Wilmington nearby but the place they usually hold it is going through renovations so they moved it to the oceanside here in town. Three days long. I had no idea what to expect, but it went pretty well. In 6 hours I sold 24 puzzles. I was going to be happy with 20 today. We'll see how tomorrow goes and that will determine whether I do Sunday. Poor day, I'll just pack up and enjoy a day off. https://www.portcityribfest.net/ My booth is in "rib row". Only 5 non-food vendors are in that area, all the rest are in a totally separate area. So I had great foot traffic. Weather was perfect today. It'll be a bit chilly tomorrow and they're charging admission tomorrow and Sunday so I'll see if that reduces sales. https://www.portcityribfest.net/layout I haven't done an event in 3 or 4 weeks, it felt odd setting up and doing my sales pitch again. 3 more events remaining in the year. I'll be ready for a break at that point.2 points

Taking a warm-up break.. was 17F when I went out to the shop this morning.. been working on the custom ordered clocks I got the other day.. Not due to ship until late next week so I'm just taking my time on them in this cold.. though it is getting better out there pretty quickly as I've been out there for about 2.5 hours and looked at the thermometer before left the shop and it's up to 25 now.. Might take the rest of the day off as I have a big plumbing job to do here in the house.. have to take the wall out to get too it.. why doesn't anyone make access panels for things like this I'll never know.. will be one when I'm done.2 points

A very fine fixture for glue-ups. Plus the pics and text were first rate. The only problem I see is if the stock was significantly larger or smaller then you'd be making a new fixture. Still you know your work and sizes needed.2 points

I am third generation, retired military, 1969-1989. Grandfather, father and I have 77 years of service. My heart felt thanks go out to my mother, and my wife, who moved all over the world, often with less than 30 days notice. They stood up when their soldier was gone for a year or more at a time, often they moved kids, pets and household goods by themselves across oceans, after I found a place to live - and that is in the days before the internet, every thing done by phone and US Mail. They stayed home, putting on a brave face for the kids, as they watched the news of the fighting hoping, yet also dreading, that they would see a glimpse their soldier. And they coped with the personality changes that type of environment cause when we return, and continue to bother us the rest of our lives. They sacrificed, I served, damn I am proud them. I've attached two pdf's, one a souvenir from Dad, the other written by a soldier's wife stationed at the time in Germany. One way to preserve them I guess. unknown-soldier.pdf army-brat.pdf2 points

I have glued 1/8" pieces together and it came out nice. One thing to get them to come out right is don't clamp them very tight. I think using the wedges would be enough.2 points

Shop Is A Bit Cold At 17F This AM
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to SCROLLSAW703 for a topic
We've had a cold front through here in NW Kansas for nearly a week. Luckily my shop is heated & a/c'd. I keep the shop about 72* - 74* in the winter. About 72* in the summer. I ain't braggin' gentlemen. I feel for ya. I've hauled cattle out of Montana when it's -40* & snowin' like no other. I've also hauled fertilizer out of Michigan when it's colder'n a snowmans a**! But, it gets cold here on the plains, too. When the wind blows, IT BLOWS!!! And nothin' to slow it down!2 points -

Glad that arctic chill that was befalling so many areas north was not yet sticking her chilly fingers down this far south just yet. High's today and through the weekend suppose to be mid-upper 50's. Warmer still next week into the 60's. Winter can wait as far as I am concerned. Would love another mild winter like we had last year. Here's hoping. in the mean time, for those of you not so fortunate, I hope that it warms up for you some at least.2 points

Hi everyone, I just finished this piece today from a pattern that Paul (Grampa) made for me. I have to give Paul a lot of credit for making this pattern for me. He didn't have much to work with but somehow he did his magic and came up with this. These pattern makers that we have in here don't get enough credit. Thanks again Paul. I'm sure my friend will love this. He doesn't know I'm making this for him.1 point

You are correct - this is designed specifically for my saw and the work I typically do. With a 20" saw the width dimension for a golden mean plaque works out to be 12.36" That is what this design yields with the cauls pictured above. In a pinch, I could make another set of cauls that are 2" wide which would give me capacity of 15.5" . This fixture is also compact enough and light enough to hang on the wall and out of the way. Since I have more tools (a legacy of 70 years of collecting) than I have floorspace in my shop that was a huge consideration. If I had unlimited space I would build a birch laminated bench top with the retractable bench stops which would serve the same purpose. All the best!!!! Bruce1 point

The pattern is by Sue Mey and found in SWWC Winter 2017 issue #69. I used 3/4" plywood stained walnut for the backing. The stable is 3/4" quarter sawn Sycamore. The figures are 3/4" Flame Maple, which I didn't know until the finish was applied. The animal are 3/4" Walnut. This was a fun project to complete. I used FD Polar #5 blades and finished with spray Shellac. Comments welcome.1 point -

This year I am asking people to consider not watching NFL games this weekend. African-Americans certainly have a good point. Often treated unfairly, and have a legal right to protest. However, a football field is not the time or place for that. If you disrespect our flag & anthem, you might as well spit in the face of a person who is or has fought for your right of Freedom of Speech. Also, go up to the grieving members of a fallen soldier and slap them in the face as long as you are at it. jerry, Army volunteer 1959-1961 (1 year north of the Artic Circle)1 point -
