Well I thought I would try doing letters. I used this pattern from Steve Good's site. It is done with 1/4" birch and the backing was made from old pieces of pallets I had laying around. The backer was stained with one quick coat and wiped off immediately to give the appearance of weathered wood. I finished it with spray gloss lacquer, not sure it shows in the picture or not. I noticed after I placed the letters that I was off on my squareness but oh well I think it still turned out pretty good.6 points

Got a possible order for 30 of these. I’v been quite busy and haven’t posted many photos and was just posting for a minute so thought I’d share this one I’m working on today plus the cab over semi that cut this morning picture of that one in the pattern request forum. The gulfstream is a pattern I did.3 points -

Kentucky Animal Puzzle
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to orangeman for a topic
Recently had a request for a Kentucky Wildlife puzzle! And here is the result. 12.5" x 5.25" x 3/4" and a tray type puzzle. I provide one solution but there are multiple solutions. All animals are native to the Commonwealth Kentucky. The tray is stained but the animals are natural hardwoods and oiled. bb2 points -
So in the past 3 1/2 weeks, I have cut out 93 puzzles and have 20 more to do in the next couple of days along with 2 monograms. It's been a busy month and hopefully this weekend is a barn burner like the past craft show. Jim2 points

Domestic and exotic wood pendants
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to WayneG for a topic
I got on a kick about 8 months ago and made these pendants. They are so much fun to make and a great way to use up your scraps. I string then up with black hemp cord and twist clasps mostly although some want magnetic. Gonna source out small little "rivet" like brass/silver/gold pieces to put in the holes to make them look even better. These are proving to be popular, I wear different necklaces everyday... Pics of the lot, then 7 of so pics a bit closer up and the a pic of some close up2 points -
I have now made three of them. I cut them out of 1/2 inch curly maple. Honestly I never look at the blade recommendations, after about 13 years of scrolling I have my go to blades . I agree a#5 is a bit big but I tend to use much smaller blades than most. For this I used an Olson Mach 3 blade for almost all of it. I thought that the snowflake would look better if it stood proud of the rest of it. So when I was all done cutting I set my table to 3.5 -4 deg left side down and with an Olson #2 blade cut the 4 points connecting the snow flake. I put a small mark at the top of the snowflake (on the back) to maintain the orientation. Withe a bit of wood glue at the 4 points I pushed the snowflake back in. I also put a few drops Of thick CA glue from the back in several places for additional strength. The image with arrows shows direction of cut so that the snow flake stands proud. Also this picture was taken before I removed a bit of glue squeeze out.2 points

Hey Brian, in addition to what has already been given, any of the puzzle books by the Petersons. They give excellent info on cutting puzzles.2 points

Brian, I've purchased most of the scroll sawing books I've seen over the years, and I still own all of them. What I have found from reading all of them, is that most of them have the same information on how to saw safely and efficiently. And what the different types of blades were used for what, especially, the books that were directed more to new scrollers. So you could get away with using just about any book directed to new scrollers, and not be wrong. I no longer have any use for the books I own, but shipping them to you would just be to costly. I checked earlier today to see what it would cost to get seven back issues of Woodworking and Crafts shipped to me . It was going to cost $63.00, that was just a little to rich for my pocketbook. I would recommend Simply Wood not specifically for beginners, but it has a good introduction. It has a nice range of projects that you wouldn't necessarily think of. sort of how to use a scrollsaw to make a project better, type of book.2 points

Cyber Monday Scroll Saw Deals

Delta's 40-694 is on sale for less than 300 and it is a clone of the Dewalt with a built in arm holder. I have had one for a year with no issues. You will need a stand and light but the light that comes with Dewalt or delta is not as good as an aftermarket one.1 point -

Looks great !...Good luck on the order !1 point -
I wouldn't suggest any books. You tube and Steve good sight are free and better than any book. ( now I'm talking about a how to scroll book. They're are many good intarsia and specific pattern books out there but not a how to use ur scroll saw) not that the books are bad but in my opinion you can't learn how to use a saw from a book. You just have to do it.1 point

Beginner Books
WayneMahler reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Can't go wrong with Nelson's book. It's mostly a teaching resource, with the instructions, practice pages and tips that are invaluable to a beginner, but there are also some nice patterns as well. I wish I had known about this book when I was starting out. Also, if someone is just looking for some basic pattern books, suitable for beginners and some intermediate level scrollers, Patrick Spielman has a number of books that are very good resources. Most are more devoted to patterns, but also contain some instruction/tips.1 point -

I agree with Ray. John Nelson's books are perfect for beginners. They touch on must types of scrolling and are well written. They helped me a lot!1 point -

I got that same book as Ray, then got some Intarsia beginner books, and then some others but as Jim said - some of my best help and information came from here on the Village, Steve Good's blog and videos, and the Magazines forum.1 point -

its been a bit of emotional time here in my family. i got news early sunday afternoon that a cousin of mine, amy, died in her sleep. an unknown aneurysm. she was 45 . an amazing mother of 3, wonderful wife to an amazing husband, loving, supportive sister of 1 brother, amazing daughter, friend, and exceptional employee- she was a pediatric physical therapist at beaumont hospital in royal oak. amy helped many children through PT along with their families over the years. she was supportive of everyone in her life and also crazy funny-always lookin at the brighter side and finding something funny to help get through tough times. im not good at words in times lime this, but kind of good at making dust, and was reminded of this pattern when thinking about what her 3 children(all pre teen) are going through and will be going through. i know it wont stop the greiving, but hope they may help them find even a little comort at some time in the future.1 point
