    Craft fair

My last indoor craft fair of the year took place today. The day did not start well. I went to open my car door and the handle came off in my hand so I had to climb in from the passenger side. Then I got to the venue and found I had left my display stands at home. However, nonetheless the day was a great success. I sold three items to other vendors before we even opened and ended the day at more than double my previous best. I sold items that had not sold over several previous sales and one gentleman single handedly bought no less than ten items! I have also had some follow ups since I got home which will add to the total. So for those of you who do sell, keep at it, you never know what will sell on the day but in the end things usually do so chin up, enjoy your self and have fun! Now I need to get to work replenishing stock, a problem I have not had in a long time ! Rob

  4. So I have been mulling this over for a while, but only today did I find the time and had all material together and actually could make my advent piece. Comments welcome and appreciated. It's a slice of oak. Most pieces are glued on, but the smaller ones in front only lie on top.

    Mini Reindeer

I normally make some of the compound cut Reindeer as ornaments and gifts for Christmas. They are typically about 2" tall. As I was doing this, I wondered if I could cut some smaller ones and this is what I ended up with. The Reindeer are about 3/4" Tall and cut from Sycamore using a FD #1 Polar blade. The plan is to turn them into earrings.

    My first art show.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and inspirationt o go for it. I had my first 3 hour art show at a school yesterday and it was very inspiring to let kids play with puzzles and tell me how much they love what I have done. I was informed that people dont carry too much cash for school shows. I think my lamps marked at $50 was too much for the crowd. Grownups were also amazed at the work I had done. Even though I only made $120 on puzzles, I got a lot of people asking me if I could do a few custom piece . I got feedback facebook from my first customer and how much they loved the puzzles. Attached are pictures of the table setup.

Got an alert from Home Depot saying the Excalibur is back in stock. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Excalibur-120-Volt-21-in-Tilting-Head-Scroll-Saw-with-Stand-and-Foot-Switch-EX-21K/205414436 Rockler is offering them now also: http://www.rockler.com/excalibur-21-scroll-saw-with-foot-switch?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PL&sid=V9146&gclid=CjwKCAiAu4nRBRBKEiwANms5W8HuOJko0WhzP9NNN5tkIsbKDWccA1nsFRjmXXMEwEXgxsoidXoQjRoCLSoQAvD_BwE And Sears: http://www.sears.com/general-international-21inch-tilting-head-scroll-saw-with/p-A011574695?sid=IDx01192011x000001&gclid=CjwKCAiAu4nRBRBKEiwANms5W-mQjbmgDtWzUerbJ4pihQc0OcU4vFVynsBL483Fh-zTF2QL8wViGBoC054QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CN6k-cH_7NcCFU0cgQod4YUG6g With King available, and without Seyco carrying this saw, I have mixed emotions, but still, good to see the black Ex being sold again. I would love to know the back story. If General was having issues with their manufacturer (who is apparently making these for everyone now), did General have to get another manufacturer geared up to to begin making these. If so, not sure I would trust the first ones off the line.

  11. Hi all, Christmas is all about thankfulness, and I am a regular on here every day, even if it's just to see what is new. Everyone who posts here is doing something thankful to help all us others out. Maybe I don't use everything I find, but often have tried various things. I have been scrolling for over 30 years and there is always something new or new tip that pops up on the site. Merry Christmas to all of you here on the forums from nrscroller (Bill ) I am a great fan of Zach Sobiech who is paralized from sports and have read the book his mom wrote and my favorite saying is from him "USE WHAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER PERSON HAPPY AND JOY WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU">

    Last Show

Just got back from the last show of the season, I did $236, $100 less then last year, still a decent show, and only had $70 on credit card. Really didn't sell any Christmas Items, and ornaments are still a good seller. Now I can concentrate on a couple orders. Overall not a bad year. edward

  16. Making this for a Disney and Star Wars fan. Found the graphic on Google Images, and thought this might be the perfect fit for this person. I wasn't super familiar with the Star Wars symbol, but it came up all over the place in may searches, so evidently it is common amongst the fans. Those ears however, look very familiar :-) In a totally accidental happenstance, notice how In God we trust was in about the only place it could be, and still be completely visible. Not sure I could have done that on purpose. What do you think? ------Randy

  18. Flying Dutchman blades used to be my go to blade.. and at times..still is.. that said though.. there is a day and night difference between the FD Ultra Reverse #3 and #5 and the Pegas Modified Geometry #3 and #5.. Those Pegas blades cut way more efficiently faster and last longer as well.. and good smooth back side.. as the Pegas has the reverse teeth.. Pricing is pretty close to the same I think.. I know they aren't a big whopping difference like you show for those super sharps.. I've never tried the super sharps.. might try a few just to see.. but I have a hard time believing they are more cost efficient than those Pegas.. maybe more so for the FD blades.. Those Pegas are hard to beat.. I haven't got too technical on looking at the blades teeth arrangement or even looked to closely at the sizes.. but I will say.. I do know the Pegas #5 MG blade wont fit into the same hole as a #5 FD-UR blade does.. found that out the hard way one day when I bent a almost brand new blade..

    A try at Letters

Well I thought I would try doing letters. I used this pattern from Steve Good's site. It is done with 1/4" birch and the backing was made from old pieces of pallets I had laying around. The backer was stained with one quick coat and wiped off immediately to give the appearance of weathered wood. I finished it with spray gloss lacquer, not sure it shows in the picture or not. I noticed after I placed the letters that I was off on my squareness but oh well I think it still turned out pretty good.

  26. I just got done cutting 110 compound birdhouse ornaments. I bought some FD Polar #5's specifically for this, having never used them before. While they cut marginally better than the Olson #5 Skip tooth I had, they were still lacking in durability and speed of cut. Perhaps I should have stepped up to the next larger size. However, I had some Olson MS #7's lying around and even though they are a reverse tooth blade, I found that they cut soooo much better and lasted much longer than either of the #5 skip tooth blades I tried. I was using them to cut African Mahogany. I was able to cut out between 7 & 10 birdhouses with one MS #7 blade, where I was barely able to cut 3 with either of the #5 skip tooth blades. Not sure I would necessarily recommend a reverse tooth blade over a comparable skip tooth, but in my particular case those Olson MS #7's cut very well.

  40. I usually do most of my Christmas shopping online. I hate crowds and the traffic. So I'd rather spend my shopping time online. Its quick, easy, cheaper, and my gifts arrive at my door in a couple days. I do most of my shopping on Amazon and I love it! Very convenient. If you shop on Amazon, there's a way for you to get your Christmas shopping done and support SSV at the same time. We don't have a large publication to support our operating expenses. Thankfully, we have members choose to pitch in a few bucks by becoming SSV Patrons. That certainly helps offset the costs of running SSV so we can keep the lights on. But we also participate in an affiliate program with Amazon. Basically, if you purchase something from Amazon after clicking our banner, we get a small kickback. It doesn't cost you any extra. We can't see who bought what, so no worries there. It's just an easy way to support SSV while Christmas shopping. I've added a small Amazon banner in the right side of the forum. Just click that before you begin shopping. I'll be removing the Amazon banner after Christmas. Thanks for your continued support!

  41. Reverse tooth blades do not excel in doing compound cutting because the reversed teeth push sawdust back in the cut. That is why a skip tooth blade is preferred. For me the FD Polar blade is my first choice.

    My first wooden gift box

This is my first gift box Birch plywood 4mm and 6mm I know that a box made from solid wood (not plywood) might look better, but I wanted to show that using simple and cheap materials and without professional tools (I used the needle file and sandpaper) you can make beautiful projects. And here is video of making of this gift box:

  47. Good advice above. I'll add one thing. Cherry is photoreactive. If you put it in the bright sunlight it turns a deeper shade of red. even putting it under fluorescent lights will do this (although more slowly). Bruce

Hello from Southern Arizona. I can already tell that you are not afraid to write comments on here and that is exactly what one needs to do so they can quickly get to know the regulars here, also it helps us to get to know you also. I am amazed, personally, how The Village has so many people as members from all over this planet. I enjoy the friendliness and helpful attitude that exists here in The Village. I feel like I have met so many of the them and have known them for years. It is the nature of this site, I guess. I am so glad you choose us as a place to hang, contribute and share your talents.
