Proud Teacher
frankorona and 5 others reacted to MrsN for a topic
This project is not quite done, but I am too excited/proud to wait. This is the first scroll saw project one of my kids has completed here at my new school. It is a Pokemon layerscape, and the student designed it himself. The front layer has a pokeball in the grass, 2nd layer has pikachu and some pine trees, 3rd layer has a Pokemon trainer, Zapdos and a sun. It will get painted to male everything a bit easier to see We have a pretty awful pro-tech scroll saw in our shop at the moment, waiting for a new Delta hopefully. I am super proud of my student for sticking through the irritating saw and making something really neat.6 points -

I posted a request a few weeks back for a pattern and Bob jumped in an helped me with it. Made of oak with a piece of oak stained walnut for a backer. It is 3/4"x 8"x24" and is going to be hung outside on porch. Used poly that is used on boats for a finish which should hold up being on the oak. My saw is 21" so I cut the board into, cut the pattern, than glued back together. Thanks again Bob!!6 points -
Let there be space!
SCROLLSAW703 and 2 others reacted to Chunkthekid for a topic
Hello folks, I have been pretty quiet lately, there has been a lot going on with the holidays and other projects. My wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving into her childhood home so I have been hesitant on starting anymore projects in the garage since we might be packing it all up soon. Well, yesterday we were told we were ok to start moving in right away. I know none of that matters so I will get to the point of the topic. The house we are moving into is much bigger with a finished basement. My wife has already told me the basement is mine. So I am going from a cramped little garage that is full of every tool I own (lawn, auto, wood, metal) all stacked on top of each other, to a basement with room to spare for my woodworking and a two car garage for everything else. Needless to say, I am VERY excited! Being able to start from scratch with this much space is about as much fun as I think I can have lol. And now I can buy tools without having to worry about where the hell I'm going to put them. I will be picking the brains of all of you that have shops in your basements soon to figure out the best ways to ventilate. Here are a few pics of what I've got and what I'm getting. The garage doesn't look as bad as usual as I had already taken a load of stuff to the other garage. Have a good day everyone.3 points -

Gonna try something at my event Saturday...
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
This Saturday is my last event of the year and I came up with an idea I want to try, just for kicks to see if it stimulates traffic at my booth and subsequently additional sales... It'll be fun for the kids and even the adults. I likely won't have to give away many, if any puzzles. I can put it together in about 3 minutes, but I'm familiar with it. I'll test it on Mrs. Iggy to see how long it takes her. LOL I have the outline of one that will be sitting there so that people know what it is they're trying to assemble. The Rubik's Cube is just for show, but if anyone challenges me, I'm able to solve a scrambled cube in under 3 minutes. ;-) What do you think?2 points -
I am never cutting any fret work again
Lucky2 and one other reacted to Oldmansbike for a topic
I just got done dusting all the fret work I have made over the years for the wife. I used a product with bees wax and citrus oil in it called Howard's Feed and Finish and a small brush to get into the small cutouts. It worked pretty good. My pieces look new again. By the time I got to the last piece I told her I'm not making any more fret work pieces. And yes I will keep cutting fret work projects. It's too much fun.2 points -

Handmade Gift - Scroll Saw Challenge
HnJ and one other reacted to wedo scroll for a topic
This came just in time as I just finished making gifts for my family. I decided to make rather than buy my gifts this year so here they are: for my grandson Yoda, another grandson soccer pic, my daughter alphabet, dil Noel, son eagle, my wife O Holy Night. Thanks to all the designers Steve Good, TD, Scroll Saw Magazine. I modified several to add my personal taste to the designs.2 points -
Good morning! I haven't been around for a little over a year. I had been fairly new to to scrolling, but a long time stained glass guy that was going to try to start merging the two art forms when disaster struck. I had just pretty much completed building a small shop/studio and was scrolling daily when our septic system began failing rapidly. Long story, but our paid for home of 39 years was on a small lot and even with new technology the county would not give us a permit to put in a new system, leaving us up the proverbial creek without a paddle. So, as having little choice, we moved last year right before Christmas and bought a small house in the city limits of Frederick, MD. Good news: city water and sewage. Nice sized lot. Bad news: there was no garage. Real good news: I have just finished a new 12 x 24 detached shed/studio and got all of my final inspections for the building and electric last week. I have almost finished the interior, having completed walls, ceiling, lighting, French cleats throughout, and have built a couple of new benches. I picked up a used Grizzly dust collector recently and will be working on getting it connected up to my miter saw, sanders, etc. The last things I will setup are the glass area and scrollsaw station, as everything else will come to a halt as soon as I thread the first blade into the Dewalt. I still want to build a small loft and overhead wood storage, but that should be completed by the end of this week. When I am finished I will post a couple of pics of my rustic, treehouse carpentry.1 point

Owls???
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to jbrowning for a topic
So I had my last craft show this past weekend. I had at least a dozen people this weekend ask me about owls. What's making the owls so popular this year? And if you know the answer to that question, enlighten us on what's going to be popular next year.1 point -
Dust Colllection Question

A good shop vac should have sufficient vacuum to pull through two hoses. Something like 3/4" pvc as the main line should work and then your table top line would be something smaller and more flexible and easy to maneuver.1 point -

Delta ( DeWalt Clone) Maybe Good Deal
OCtoolguy reacted to ScollSaw Slasher for a topic
Having used both E-bay and Craig's list. I'd never offer free shipping on that item or for that matter put it on E-bay. The expense and the good possibility of the shipping gorillas destroying the saw in transit is a distinct possibility. Been very successful in liquidating many of my major woodworking tools through Craig's list. Cash and Carry! As to the saw itself, I have one and it's been great. After squaring it up out of the box, it has been a cutting banshee. Have used some extremely hard wood in my intarsia work with no problem. Still have yet to service it but it's nice to know that parts whether from Delta or Dewalt are still available.1 point -

Dust Colllection Question
oldhudson reacted to Scrolling Steve for a topic
I have the system and am very pleased with the way it performs. ....This unit is quite and most of the dust is captured in the cyclone jar.....I have used it for several months and have only changed the small bag in the vac-unit once, while dumping the jar many times...I also have a 20x20 box fan near the saw with air filter taped to it.....I also have the shop vac air cleaner near by that pulls the finer dust from the shop.....Just my two cents....works for me.1 point -
1) make sure your blade is at 90 deg to the table. 2) add a little bit of tension to the blade normal at 3 add to 3.5 as an example. 3) do not have any push to the side as it causes the blade to bow and a bulging cut. Hope this helps. I don't recommend a "puzzle" blade as they are prone to bow in thick wood. I use #3 or #5 for this type puzzle. Fredfret Wichita, Ks1 point

I didn't notice the on collection on the top, which means the dust created on top is just blown into the air. I think that is where the most you breath is generated. Unless you could modify it to suck the top dust also, I would pass. Just my opinion. Other than that, I like what I see.1 point

Dust Colllection Question
OCtoolguy reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
I use a Festool vac with pickups above and below the table. However, it is quite a bit more expensive but more versatile as I use it for other shop tools like sander and circular saw. This unit at Seyco is about $165 and supposed to be quiet. It looks pretty good but would be better if it also collected dust above the table.1 point -
I"ve got a single speed with Fasco motoer 3/4" shaft, the good one. Got a quote for repairs of less than $80.00 from bushton. any one interested $75.00. Got tied up with the Sakira and kinda forgot about this one which I was intending to get going. I forgot its either 1982 or 1985 according to serial #. Couldn:t pass up when bought my Delta Band saw satin a barn fir several years.1 point

I just have an agreement with the dust. It coats everything evenly and I leave it alone.1 point

New Project???
tomsteve reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Thanks Tom. As I said it will be on my to do list this year. I plan on changing many of my sale projects for what could be my last year doing craft shows. They have lost value and swapping money with the organizers is not my cup of tea. May get out of this all together so maybe a huge fire sale or garage sale in the near future. Will be doing some serious thinking in the next 2 years. Been doing this for over 30 years. Seen that and done that but this is the all time worst of all times. Craft shows are a thing of the past.1 point -
Olson 5" scroll saw sanding strips...
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Gonzo for a topic
I make them similar to a sanding mop. I cut the pads into small, medium, and large circles. Drill a 1/4 hole through center of each one. Put a nut and fender washer on a piece of threaded rod. Assemble scotchbrite circles on to rod forming a "ball". Add another fence washer and nut there ya have a sanding ball. I use the white scotchbrite. These are easier and quicker to make than a sanding mop. Come to think of it, heck, cut the scotchbrite into squares. Take a scissors and cut 1/2" deep every 1/4" or so. This would be even quicker and no waste! I'm going to give that a try!!! Hope that helps1 point -
