    Christmas Spirit

My contribution to the Christmas Spirit in the Browder household. Just about as much as I could muster. This is a Sheila Landry pattern and was a joy to cut. Made from oak because that's what I had. Cut with Olson blades a Mach Speed 3 reverse and Olson 2/0 reverse.

    Judy and Ron

A friend of mine lost his father a few years back He requested that I make this as a gift to his mother, and I assume as a type of memorial. The parents were married in 1964. So happens, that was the last year they made the Kennedys out of silver, so I got a little more experience cutting silver, and saving those shavings. -----Randy

  3. Hello folks, I have been pretty quiet lately, there has been a lot going on with the holidays and other projects. My wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving into her childhood home so I have been hesitant on starting anymore projects in the garage since we might be packing it all up soon. Well, yesterday we were told we were ok to start moving in right away. I know none of that matters so I will get to the point of the topic. The house we are moving into is much bigger with a finished basement. My wife has already told me the basement is mine. So I am going from a cramped little garage that is full of every tool I own (lawn, auto, wood, metal) all stacked on top of each other, to a basement with room to spare for my woodworking and a two car garage for everything else. Needless to say, I am VERY excited! Being able to start from scratch with this much space is about as much fun as I think I can have lol. And now I can buy tools without having to worry about where the hell I'm going to put them. I will be picking the brains of all of you that have shops in your basements soon to figure out the best ways to ventilate. Here are a few pics of what I've got and what I'm getting. The garage doesn't look as bad as usual as I had already taken a load of stuff to the other garage. Have a good day everyone.

  7. I made Ribbon Racks for my 3 grandsons who are big into hockey. Each a little different. Carter is both goalie and a forward, Cooper is only goalie, Caleb is only defense so the racks match. For the girls I made a shelf as they are not into anyone sport.

  12. I'm in agreement! This has to be the friendliest, most helpful scroll site on the web! I've been scrollin' 26 years this year. I've learned A LOT from this site & the other scrollers. I've made a lot of friends here, too. This is the one place I feel accepted, & feel like I fit in. Thank you all! I'm here every day, I may not say much, but I try to help the new ones comin' in, & even the experienced in the same way they help me. Merry Christmas to all, & God bless you & yours! Keep making sawdust!

  13. Mrs. Iggy and I play trivia every Wednesday night at a local pub with another couple. I took the dino puzzle with me and had the other couple try to solve it. After 10 minutes they hadn't even gotten half of it assembled, so I feel good that I won't be giving any puzzles away. LOL Although I wouldn't mind having someone win one every now and again.

Yes dust collection is very important. Dust from the basement shop seem to make all through the house. Good thing is, who cares what the weather is outside?

  16. This came just in time as I just finished making gifts for my family. I decided to make rather than buy my gifts this year so here they are: for my grandson Yoda, another grandson soccer pic, my daughter alphabet, dil Noel, son eagle, my wife O Holy Night. Thanks to all the designers Steve Good, TD, Scroll Saw Magazine. I modified several to add my personal taste to the designs.

  17. Yes, I've learn a great deal here.. I just wish I could give back as much as I've gained on here.. Maybe one day.. Hands down the best scroll saw site on the web.. Travis does an awesome job with it.. Thanks to everyone who post topics and replies.. whether informational or otherwise.. without some general chit chat the site might be a bit boring.. I check in everyday.. sometimes several times a day just during taking a break from sawing.. etc.. always try to answer questions if I can.. Merry Christmas to all.. and if you're selling.. wishing you many many sales.. so you have to work all year to restock

  18. Thanks Bill! I try to be helpful, I guess that's why I teach scroll saw at the local Woodcraft store. There certainly isn't much money in it but I enjoy teach new comers and some experienced sawyers learn some new tricks. It's fun to trade information with folks from around the world. This is a great place to hang and talk shop!

  19. Hi all, Christmas is all about thankfulness, and I am a regular on here every day, even if it's just to see what is new. Everyone who posts here is doing something thankful to help all us others out. Maybe I don't use everything I find, but often have tried various things. I have been scrolling for over 30 years and there is always something new or new tip that pops up on the site. Merry Christmas to all of you here on the forums from nrscroller (Bill ) I am a great fan of Zach Sobiech who is paralized from sports and have read the book his mom wrote and my favorite saying is from him "USE WHAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER PERSON HAPPY AND JOY WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU">

  20. If you're using large boards, the shelf liner is the way to go... I use 6' long boards. I simply roll it out, stick it to the wood, spray it with adhesive, lay the patterns on it and start cutting. If you're using small pieces of wood/board, I could understand maybe using blue painters tape although it still takes longer to apply one strip at a time. P.S. if you order it from Walmart, it's free shipping with a purchase of $35

  24. Congrats on the new house, & your new shop! You'll have space to think now! I agree! dust ventilation is number one on the list. I had a basement shop for 20+ years. Lighting, ventilation, & keepin' dust from the rest of the house needs to be considered. When you do finish work, I always hung shower curtains at the doors, & put window fans in the windows. Keep it clean! Use every inch of wall space for tools & etc. you can. Keep your wood out of your work area, if possible. And put your tools on casters so you can move them when you need to.

  25. I can certainly see that happening and I won't be surprised if my little experiment is a 1 time thing. I'll have a separate table set up just for this and will let folks have fun with it. I'll report back. Assuming my event doesn't get rained out... Ugh, I hope not.

  26. Scott, will be interesting to see what you discover. I found that by having puzzles out for "play" attracts folks who spend time in the booth playing and then don't spend a dime. I used to have my mini puzzles out and kids would play with them and then the parents would hustle them out of there without buying anything. We don't do that anymore. bb

  27. Not so much a "secret", more of a methodology... step by step working on one side, then each row all the way around til you get to the bottom... each area requires certain combination of turns. Here is the book I memorized back in the early 80's. That said, the world record is something like a few seconds... it's nuts how fast it can be done. I never tried going for speed. I'm happy at under 3 minutes. Sanding off corners

Other options would be: Metal file, Chainsaw file, Fingernail file (I grind the ends of them to different angles), Fingernail emery board (They are shaped like tongue depressors & quite aggressive), A few hand sanding blocks with different grits of sandpaper.

  34. I was side tracked again away from the shop, doctors appointment, store and the usual pop in 's at the ware house complex so the big name order got put on hold it's 95% done and the dead line is the 15th.I ran across some folding T.V.tables on the side of the road.In an instant i knew they were old and particule board was not around then so i bee lined to it and loaded it up.very heavy or i'm getting older but i got it and yes it's maple.beautyful projects will be made from this. Also i did a quick name for a new girl at the doctors and suggested they make good long lasting low price Christmas gifts,so we will see what happens.

    Compound cutting wood

Hey @Bill WIlsonl, one of the first things i learned here in the village was the old saying "no pictures, didn't happen" @CharleyL don't give up on us yet. I for one appreciate you sharing all your secrets for successful compound cutting - I really want to give it a try soon. My hangups so far besides lacking time is I need to make the clamps to help hold them while cutting. I had hoped to get to it last week, but other things happened and diverted me out of the shop. When I get there, I will share photos. For those who are interested in compound cutting patterns, Steve Good shared one of a birdhouse, bird and stand today on his blog. It can be found here: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2017/12/compound-cut-bird-house-and-stand.html

  38. I just got done dusting all the fret work I have made over the years for the wife. I used a product with bees wax and citrus oil in it called Howard's Feed and Finish and a small brush to get into the small cutouts. It worked pretty good. My pieces look new again. By the time I got to the last piece I told her I'm not making any more fret work pieces. And yes I will keep cutting fret work projects. It's too much fun.

  48. Ok, I'll bite. How do you make sanding balls. I just went to the Woodcraft site and found the ScotchBrite balls but I don't see how they are made from that one picture. Can you please explain how you do it?
    1 point
  49. Sanding mops are very easy to make. There are a few good YouTube videos on it. I use my dull scroll saw blades to cut the sandpaper. Also, I have made the scotchbrite sanding balls that you can find at Rockler or Woodcraft. These are even easier and quicker to make. Even less expensive then making sanding mops. Different colored scotchbrite pads = different "grit".
