    Tui on a flax flower

This is one I have cut a couple of times before but I love it. Reclaimed rimu from an old drawer box finished with 50/50 BLO and beeswax. The colour and grain of the rimu remind me of a sunset. Rob

  2. For those who are interested. With one event remaining, tomorrow, if it doesn't end up as a rain-out... here are my stats for 2017... 970 - Total puzzles sold at 27 events from April 1 thru November 30. 153 - Sold at best event (Cary Laze Daze) 11 - Sold at worst event (Dog show) 36 - Average sold per event 162 - Unique/Different breeds/animals sold Top 15 Sellers: 49 - Dachshunds 34 - Carolina Beach Sea Turtles 33 - Rescue dogs 28 - Pelicans 20 - Unicorns (only sold them the second half of the year) 16 - Swimming Mermaid 15 - Elephants 15 - Kure Beach Dolphins 13 - Sharks 12 - Pit Bulls 11 - Labradors 10 - Beagles 10 - Pugs 10 - Sitting Mermaids 10 - Huskys Total of top 15 = 286 which equates to 29% of total overall sales and since I live at the beach, the sea critters are obviously quite popular. Total "kids puzzles" = 250 which equates to 25% of total overall sales That means the remaining 46% were spread out among 151 other animals. I display approximate 130 different dog breeds and animals at each event. I really hope I can do my event tomorrow... I'd hate to miss out on a great show. Iggy

Just out experimenting with stuff, looking at SciFi Symbols. Saw this from the Star Trek Universe and thought I would try to cut it. There were a lot of floaters in the pattern, so I tried to bridge things as I went. If you look close at the center piece, that whole section is held by a very little bridge towards the front, which makes this way too fragile. If I cut this again I'll put another support in the back.

    Auction Piece

In September I was the feature artist of the month at a local cafe that is run by Gay/lesbian folk and the place is very popular. They are having an auction of donated art work to sponsor an lgbtq family that is coming to Canada. Here is what I am made them for the auction, it's a bunch of lgbtq symbols and I splatter painted the backboard and frame with the colors of the LGBTQ flag. Will drop it off Saturday morning

  8. I was cleaning up my shop and ended up with a pile of scrap pallet wood and a chunk of maple. So I figured to lessen the amount of scrap I needed to get rid of I reused some of what I had. I pulled both patterns from Steve Good's site. The flower and vase is all pallet wood (pine) I intentionally left the flower pedals rough to give to appearance of texture. I maple I turned into something for my wife to make her day. On both pieces I used Minwax Walnut stain and spray gloss lacquer. (I should have removed the vase in behind lol)

  9. Here are a couple of ornaments that I cut from 1-1/4” blocks of Red Oak and Ash. They were cut using the PS Wood Super Sharp #7. After cutting they were hand sanded and also sanded using a Mac Mop. The finish is a dip in Natural Danish Oil. I glue the pattern on the block with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. I sometimes use clear tape but have gotten away from using it. There are times when the tape lifts from the edge of a cut and makes it difficult to see the line. After I have cut on one side, I will use a couple of small drops of wood glue on the edges and clamp it back together. This provides a secure block for cutting the other side of the ornament. I know that some swear by the use of clear tape to help “lubricate” the blade but I have not found a clear advantage for it. This is another example of whatever works for you….keep doing it. This is the setup that I use for compound cutting. The jig is spring loaded and uses some long 10-24 machine screws. The spring loading helps keep the pressure on the wood block during the entire process. You can see in the picture the ¼”Loc-Line for blowing the dust off and the ¾” dust pickup on the opposite side. This really helps capture the dust at the source. The dust pickup is connected to a Festool Vacuum.

    Christmas Spirit

My contribution to the Christmas Spirit in the Browder household. Just about as much as I could muster. This is a Sheila Landry pattern and was a joy to cut. Made from oak because that's what I had. Cut with Olson blades a Mach Speed 3 reverse and Olson 2/0 reverse.

  15. Hello folks, I have been pretty quiet lately, there has been a lot going on with the holidays and other projects. My wife and I have been tossing around the idea of moving into her childhood home so I have been hesitant on starting anymore projects in the garage since we might be packing it all up soon. Well, yesterday we were told we were ok to start moving in right away. I know none of that matters so I will get to the point of the topic. The house we are moving into is much bigger with a finished basement. My wife has already told me the basement is mine. So I am going from a cramped little garage that is full of every tool I own (lawn, auto, wood, metal) all stacked on top of each other, to a basement with room to spare for my woodworking and a two car garage for everything else. Needless to say, I am VERY excited! Being able to start from scratch with this much space is about as much fun as I think I can have lol. And now I can buy tools without having to worry about where the hell I'm going to put them. I will be picking the brains of all of you that have shops in your basements soon to figure out the best ways to ventilate. Here are a few pics of what I've got and what I'm getting. The garage doesn't look as bad as usual as I had already taken a load of stuff to the other garage. Have a good day everyone.

    Judy and Ron

A friend of mine lost his father a few years back He requested that I make this as a gift to his mother, and I assume as a type of memorial. The parents were married in 1964. So happens, that was the last year they made the Kennedys out of silver, so I got a little more experience cutting silver, and saving those shavings. -----Randy

    Thanks BobScroll

I posted a request a few weeks back for a pattern and Bob jumped in an helped me with it. Made of oak with a piece of oak stained walnut for a backer. It is 3/4"x 8"x24" and is going to be hung outside on porch. Used poly that is used on boats for a finish which should hold up being on the oak. My saw is 21" so I cut the board into, cut the pattern, than glued back together. Thanks again Bob!!

  20. Got a few more done for orders from my last craft fair. The 1929 Model A is a pattern Don at Old Crow scrollworks did for me. Think it came out nice. The Harry Potter was a pattern I had on file from a while back I always wanted to do and someone asked for one so I got to cut it. The UCLA was another request but a soft spot for me, our younger daughter went to school there. Thanks for looking jim

  21. This Saturday is my last event of the year and I came up with an idea I want to try, just for kicks to see if it stimulates traffic at my booth and subsequently additional sales... It'll be fun for the kids and even the adults. I likely won't have to give away many, if any puzzles. I can put it together in about 3 minutes, but I'm familiar with it. I'll test it on Mrs. Iggy to see how long it takes her. LOL I have the outline of one that will be sitting there so that people know what it is they're trying to assemble. The Rubik's Cube is just for show, but if anyone challenges me, I'm able to solve a scrambled cube in under 3 minutes. ;-) What do you think?

  22. I am trying to cut out Animal Puzzles and finding difficulty in getting the Blade to cut the puzzle pieces so that they fit together when attaching from the top and the bottom. The puzzle pieces are a little bigger on the back side ,so the pieces only go together from the back side. I have tried realigning the blade with no luck. I am using the #1 Blade. I have OCD and this is driving me "Nuckin Futs", LOL Thanx in advance for all assistance in correcting this issue, Guy

    Proud Teacher

This project is not quite done, but I am too excited/proud to wait. This is the first scroll saw project one of my kids has completed here at my new school. It is a Pokemon layerscape, and the student designed it himself. The front layer has a pokeball in the grass, 2nd layer has pikachu and some pine trees, 3rd layer has a Pokemon trainer, Zapdos and a sun. It will get painted to male everything a bit easier to see We have a pretty awful pro-tech scroll saw in our shop at the moment, waiting for a new Delta hopefully. I am super proud of my student for sticking through the irritating saw and making something really neat.

Here are two I like - I think they are both Steve Good patterns. I especially like Peace. Went back and checked, the one on the left is Steve Good ( http://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php) and the one on the right is Birchbark - one of our own (http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/image/6432-peace-nativity/)

  27. With the 10-24 machine screws and springs, I am not even beginning to approach the point of them stretching. I also do not have students to worry about and have never caught a blade on the machine screws or springs. With sandpaper on the inside of the jig, the parts I am cutting do not come loose so they are plenty tight with the springs.

  29. Hello all, Was doing some scrolling today and finished my piece. Next was to sand it. I just got my Olson 1/4"- 5" sanding strips yesterday and thought I'd give them a try. Wrong! They don't fit in my pinless saw clamps. Now, I can't be the first one to think of this, but I put it in a jewelers saw and it works like a charm. See photo. It seems to me that one could use worn out sanding belts, and make them any width to meet the need. The grit on the belt would hold real good to the clamps. Take Care bp

    Compound cutting wood

Hi Charlie, I cut a dozen of these reindeer on my Delta Q3 and sold all of them at my recent craft fair for $10 each. I did add a red ribbon around their necks though but stupidly didn't take any photographs. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely Charlie. Your generosity is appreciated! Rob

    Last of the Mini

A couple of days ago, I posted a picture of a couple of mini Reindeer that were about 7/8" tall. I wondered if I could make some a bit smaller. This is the result with two smaller being 5/8" and the smallest at 7/16". This is the smallest that I can cut. The larger Reindeer were cut from Sycamore and the smaller from Maple. I found the Sycamore was not strong enough for making the small Reindeer. The small ones were cut using a FD #2/0 blade. The pictures below show the setup on my Hegner saw with the lighted magnifying glass. I built a spring jig to hold the small blank and it has sand paper on the inside of the saws to hold the blank tight. The springs allow a tight hold that does not change the pressure as you make the cuts.

    Let there be space!

Chunk, congrats on the shop upgrade, you will soon be out of space again though. I upped my shop size a few years ago, back then I thought I would never outgrow the new shop. Wrong! I would like to build a new larger shop now,my present shop is far to small now that I've gotten into turning. One thing I would like to suggest, if you haven't already thought of doing so. Is to take one of those rooms, and to turn it into nothing but a finish room. Use that room for no other purpose, other then for finishing purposes. Len

    New Project???

Like to start a new project for next year or I should say there will be several new projects, but this one in particular will be military plaques. Something on the lines of Dirk Boehlmans patterns from his book. I have seen many of these and maybe a few people do them. But I want to be able to put the American flag behind them. My question is for those that have done that how do you make copies of the flag and where did you get the copy of the flag and is there a way to make it glossy other than copying on photo paper which can be costly. If not glossy maybe a stain finish to it. Not sure how I will finish the plaques yet. I would post a photo of someones but do not want to over step. Maybe I will look for one on pinterest to post. Thanks in advance and if you have examples that you did please post them as give some pointers. I found a photo which brought up more questions and I am looking for opinions. I have seen these also with just painted backgrounds, is that a better look??? I seen these like this where the center has the flag and behind the lettering is colored background, is that a better look or is the flag behind all a better look. Sort of like a poll here to help me decide. Sometimes decisions like this are tough for me. Again thanks.

    Compound cutting wood

The most important factor is the right blade. Do not use a reverse tooth blade as it will not clear the saw dust out efficiently. I use a FD Polar # 5 or # 7 for the 3D reindeer. The Polar blades have a slight set to the teeth. This clears out the saw dust faster which makes the cutting go faster. I also use Mhogany for the blank. Mhogany cuts like butter with a sharp blade. I can usually cut three or four with one blade.
