Cut on an elongated Eisenhower. Logo is really wide but not very tall, so it made sense to stretch out an Eisenhower to get more room. This could have been cut much smaller except for the eyes which don't scale down that far. In addition to the coin I cut, I added an extra picture to show the elongated coin before I cut it. I used a rolling mill to elongate the coin (this is like a train, except you can keep it in your house) :-)6 points -

My Compound Cut Ornaments
Lucky2 and 3 others reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Here are a couple of ornaments that I cut from 1-1/4” blocks of Red Oak and Ash. They were cut using the PS Wood Super Sharp #7. After cutting they were hand sanded and also sanded using a Mac Mop. The finish is a dip in Natural Danish Oil. I glue the pattern on the block with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. I sometimes use clear tape but have gotten away from using it. There are times when the tape lifts from the edge of a cut and makes it difficult to see the line. After I have cut on one side, I will use a couple of small drops of wood glue on the edges and clamp it back together. This provides a secure block for cutting the other side of the ornament. I know that some swear by the use of clear tape to help “lubricate” the blade but I have not found a clear advantage for it. This is another example of whatever works for you….keep doing it. This is the setup that I use for compound cutting. The jig is spring loaded and uses some long 10-24 machine screws. The spring loading helps keep the pressure on the wood block during the entire process. You can see in the picture the ¼”Loc-Line for blowing the dust off and the ¾” dust pickup on the opposite side. This really helps capture the dust at the source. The dust pickup is connected to a Festool Vacuum.4 points -

I was cleaning up my shop and ended up with a pile of scrap pallet wood and a chunk of maple. So I figured to lessen the amount of scrap I needed to get rid of I reused some of what I had. I pulled both patterns from Steve Good's site. The flower and vase is all pallet wood (pine) I intentionally left the flower pedals rough to give to appearance of texture. I maple I turned into something for my wife to make her day. On both pieces I used Minwax Walnut stain and spray gloss lacquer. (I should have removed the vase in behind lol)3 points -

Iggy's 2017 Statistics
frankorona and 2 others reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
For those who are interested. With one event remaining, tomorrow, if it doesn't end up as a rain-out... here are my stats for 2017... 970 - Total puzzles sold at 27 events from April 1 thru November 30. 153 - Sold at best event (Cary Laze Daze) 11 - Sold at worst event (Dog show) 36 - Average sold per event 162 - Unique/Different breeds/animals sold Top 15 Sellers: 49 - Dachshunds 34 - Carolina Beach Sea Turtles 33 - Rescue dogs 28 - Pelicans 20 - Unicorns (only sold them the second half of the year) 16 - Swimming Mermaid 15 - Elephants 15 - Kure Beach Dolphins 13 - Sharks 12 - Pit Bulls 11 - Labradors 10 - Beagles 10 - Pugs 10 - Sitting Mermaids 10 - Huskys Total of top 15 = 286 which equates to 29% of total overall sales and since I live at the beach, the sea critters are obviously quite popular. Total "kids puzzles" = 250 which equates to 25% of total overall sales That means the remaining 46% were spread out among 151 other animals. I display approximate 130 different dog breeds and animals at each event. I really hope I can do my event tomorrow... I'd hate to miss out on a great show. Iggy3 points -

Got a few more done for orders from my last craft fair. The 1929 Model A is a pattern Don at Old Crow scrollworks did for me. Think it came out nice. The Harry Potter was a pattern I had on file from a while back I always wanted to do and someone asked for one so I got to cut it. The UCLA was another request but a soft spot for me, our younger daughter went to school there. Thanks for looking jim3 points

Holy Night Nativity
MTCowpoke22 and one other reacted to Scrappile for a topic
This is my attempt at the O Holly Night Nativity that is in the latest issue of SSW magazine. It is a Sue Mey pattern. I did change the placement of the star. The star is removable so it can be easily packed away after Christmas. Already starting on my NY Resolutions This helps cover the one of trying different types of scrolling other than concentrating on detailed fret pictures. Please feel free to critic.2 points -

Just out experimenting with stuff, looking at SciFi Symbols. Saw this from the Star Trek Universe and thought I would try to cut it. There were a lot of floaters in the pattern, so I tried to bridge things as I went. If you look close at the center piece, that whole section is held by a very little bridge towards the front, which makes this way too fragile. If I cut this again I'll put another support in the back.2 points -

Here is the one I have been cutting for this season. Has gone over at shows very well. I don't have a photo of one cut but this was the one included with the pattern from Sue Mey. It uses 1/8 bb (lettering on arch), 1/4bb (uprights and arch), 3/4 pine (figures) and 1/2 pine (base ). Lots of fun to cut too2 points -
Here are two I like - I think they are both Steve Good patterns. I especially like Peace. Went back and checked, the one on the left is Steve Good ( http://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php) and the one on the right is Birchbark - one of our own (http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/image/6432-peace-nativity/)2 points

Auction Piece
frankorona reacted to WayneG for a topic
In September I was the feature artist of the month at a local cafe that is run by Gay/lesbian folk and the place is very popular. They are having an auction of donated art work to sponsor an lgbtq family that is coming to Canada. Here is what I am made them for the auction, it's a bunch of lgbtq symbols and I splatter painted the backboard and frame with the colors of the LGBTQ flag. Will drop it off Saturday morning1 point -

Randy, another very nice piece, I laughed when I read your description on how you elongated the coin. I used to work for the railroad years ago, we would flatten and elongate coins by setting the coins on the tracks, and have the train run over them. We used them to make fishing lures out of, they made great spinners. Len1 point -

Very nice work for sure Monti. Especially in light of all those points on all those stars. Me and stars don't yet do well together. I know - keep practicing. Maybe one day, mine will look half that good. I really like this new creation and as had been mentioned, good to see new ideas. Thanks for sharing.1 point -
I once tried strips of sandpaper in the clamps, but loose grit from the sandpaper, falling onto the saw table left scratches as the work and clamp were moved over them, so I quit using the sandpaper. The stretching and bending of the all thread takes a long time and many uses of the clamp before it becomes obvious. It doesn't happen quickly, but eventually you will notice it and I recently had some of the stainless all thread begin to bend, but I have been using this clamp heavily for the past two years. If it bent because of the stress of tightening, it has taken much longer that the steel all thread,. I guess that I won't know for certain until it happens again. I don't mean these suggestions to be criticism in any way. You are doing great, but eventually, if you continue to do compound cutting, my tips may be of help to you or someone else who reads them. Gonna try something at my event Saturday...
barb.j.enders reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
This Saturday is my last event of the year and I came up with an idea I want to try, just for kicks to see if it stimulates traffic at my booth and subsequently additional sales... It'll be fun for the kids and even the adults. I likely won't have to give away many, if any puzzles. I can put it together in about 3 minutes, but I'm familiar with it. I'll test it on Mrs. Iggy to see how long it takes her. LOL I have the outline of one that will be sitting there so that people know what it is they're trying to assemble. The Rubik's Cube is just for show, but if anyone challenges me, I'm able to solve a scrambled cube in under 3 minutes. ;-) What do you think?1 point -
