    Thanks Montserrat

Just finished one of the ornaments designed by Montserrat as part of the Ornaments for Charity project. This was cut from 1/8" Baltic Birch. The inner part is layered. I cut that using a #1 FDUR blade with the table set at 12 degrees. I did use a wood burner to make it appear the tree is separate from the outer ring.

    Peacock Lamp

I've been working on this for a few weeks. I found the Pattern on Pinterest. The original was a little small so I took it to the UPS store to enlarge. Only problem was the pattern got rasterized. I rather follow a line than an edge and I had to guess the line with the rasterized edge. I did not stack cut because I tend to push too hard and distort the bottom pattern. The pattern is 1/8" BBPW. I cut the oak posts to 3/4" and dato'ed a 1/4" grove on 2 sides with the table saw to accept the pattern and the 1/8" amber Plexiglas. Initially left the protective backing on one side of the Plexiglas but it was too dark. I used parchment paper and glued edges with contact cement to the Plexiglas. I used 1/4" dowels to mount the posts on top and bottom and glued the bottom in place after mounting panels. Top is removable. I had to put a slight taper on the edges of the wooden panels since the grooves were a tight fit. I used a 40 W LED bulb and made sure it was one of the ones that shone both up and down. Some have a high collar that only shine sideways and up. Finish was 2 coats of shellac and 2 coats of lacquer. Used a roller on/off switch. There were many steps to make this project but it has a perfect spot in our hall foyer. In the next few months I'll be holding off on projects. I am having a 24 x 30 detached garage built in the back yard. It will have a small 1/2 bath, HAVC and a 14 x 30 loft. Stubbing water waste and HAVC for future expansion upstairs. Wife wants me out of the garage. Too much dust. The plan I've included will only have one garage door and the lav. on the opposite side. Entrance door will move to front. Still getting price for 2 dormers. Hope to have it done by May but it will depend on HOA AC approval.

  5. Final event of the year was today and the weather was absolutely horrible. Cold rain to start, then the rain ended as expected, but the cold lingered. It was miserable out there but still a decent crowd. In good weather I'd have sold 80-100 puzzles so I was happy selling 43 and it put me at 1,013 for the year. Now I have 3 1/2 months to stockpile for next year with a goal of selling 1700 based on the events I've selected to take part in during 2018. Pictures of today's setup.

Cut on an elongated Eisenhower. Logo is really wide but not very tall, so it made sense to stretch out an Eisenhower to get more room. This could have been cut much smaller except for the eyes which don't scale down that far. In addition to the coin I cut, I added an extra picture to show the elongated coin before I cut it. I used a rolling mill to elongate the coin (this is like a train, except you can keep it in your house) :-)

  8. This is my attempt at the O Holly Night Nativity that is in the latest issue of SSW magazine. It is a Sue Mey pattern. I did change the placement of the star. The star is removable so it can be easily packed away after Christmas. Already starting on my NY Resolutions This helps cover the one of trying different types of scrolling other than concentrating on detailed fret pictures. Please feel free to critic.

    Judy and Ron

A friend of mine lost his father a few years back He requested that I make this as a gift to his mother, and I assume as a type of memorial. The parents were married in 1964. So happens, that was the last year they made the Kennedys out of silver, so I got a little more experience cutting silver, and saving those shavings. -----Randy

Funny you mention this.. I've turned a couple customers over to the laser made stuff since they wanted " perfect " work.. customer took 8-10 days to get back to me.. I got the order..and a big one too.. $500 worth.. There are tons of laser made stuff on etsy.. there are tons of other scroll sawers selling the same items as me on etsy.. yet I'm busy enough to turn work away.. done over $3000 in sales in the last 10 days... just on etsy.. Something a scroll sawer can do.. that a laser cant do very well....unless you have a very $$$ laser set up.. and that is stack cut.. While I am only one person.. and a guy with a shop full of lasers can run more per hour than I can.. I can out cut a single laser any day.. and I can have nice clean unburnt edges.. I could add a lot more to this list.. but I've got to get back out and cut orders...

  12. Ah, thanks for the reminder, I had meant to let everyone know that due to the rain in the morning, I needed the table I was going to use for the contest, so I didn't do it. I have everything set aside though to try it at one of my early events next year.

    Tui on a flax flower

This is one I have cut a couple of times before but I love it. Reclaimed rimu from an old drawer box finished with 50/50 BLO and beeswax. The colour and grain of the rimu remind me of a sunset. Rob

I think you guys are way off the mark! There are many scrollsaw artist on this forum alone who are having great sales. Look at Iggy with his puzzles, and Kevin with his online sales, and Orangeman, and so on. I myself had banner sales this year! We do have to sell ourselves a little more, but that's ok. I too hear the laser mumblings and quickly respond with a picture of me behind my scrollsaw. Do I think the end is near for scrollsaw work? No, the sky's the limit!

    Is the end near?

Hi Perry: To answer your question It would appear that the end is near for scrollsaw work but for me personally I think laser sucks when used for scrollwork I'll be a scroller for as long I can You just can't beat that feeling when a project is done and people appreciated your work Fab4

Last weekend I did a 2 Day event .Did really well Both days. BUT I overheard 2 conversations And they were accusing me of laser cutting.I almost lost it. But I calmed down and showed some of my pieces up close and the saw and sanding marks on them. I got a compliment out of one person. But they still did not buy .Oh well

  21. I was cleaning up my shop and ended up with a pile of scrap pallet wood and a chunk of maple. So I figured to lessen the amount of scrap I needed to get rid of I reused some of what I had. I pulled both patterns from Steve Good's site. The flower and vase is all pallet wood (pine) I intentionally left the flower pedals rough to give to appearance of texture. I maple I turned into something for my wife to make her day. On both pieces I used Minwax Walnut stain and spray gloss lacquer. (I should have removed the vase in behind lol)

    Proud Teacher

This project is not quite done, but I am too excited/proud to wait. This is the first scroll saw project one of my kids has completed here at my new school. It is a Pokemon layerscape, and the student designed it himself. The front layer has a pokeball in the grass, 2nd layer has pikachu and some pine trees, 3rd layer has a Pokemon trainer, Zapdos and a sun. It will get painted to male everything a bit easier to see We have a pretty awful pro-tech scroll saw in our shop at the moment, waiting for a new Delta hopefully. I am super proud of my student for sticking through the irritating saw and making something really neat.

    Thanks BobScroll

I posted a request a few weeks back for a pattern and Bob jumped in an helped me with it. Made of oak with a piece of oak stained walnut for a backer. It is 3/4"x 8"x24" and is going to be hung outside on porch. Used poly that is used on boats for a finish which should hold up being on the oak. My saw is 21" so I cut the board into, cut the pattern, than glued back together. Thanks again Bob!!

  42. For those who are interested. With one event remaining, tomorrow, if it doesn't end up as a rain-out... here are my stats for 2017... 970 - Total puzzles sold at 27 events from April 1 thru November 30. 153 - Sold at best event (Cary Laze Daze) 11 - Sold at worst event (Dog show) 36 - Average sold per event 162 - Unique/Different breeds/animals sold Top 15 Sellers: 49 - Dachshunds 34 - Carolina Beach Sea Turtles 33 - Rescue dogs 28 - Pelicans 20 - Unicorns (only sold them the second half of the year) 16 - Swimming Mermaid 15 - Elephants 15 - Kure Beach Dolphins 13 - Sharks 12 - Pit Bulls 11 - Labradors 10 - Beagles 10 - Pugs 10 - Sitting Mermaids 10 - Huskys Total of top 15 = 286 which equates to 29% of total overall sales and since I live at the beach, the sea critters are obviously quite popular. Total "kids puzzles" = 250 which equates to 25% of total overall sales That means the remaining 46% were spread out among 151 other animals. I display approximate 130 different dog breeds and animals at each event. I really hope I can do my event tomorrow... I'd hate to miss out on a great show. Iggy

Just out experimenting with stuff, looking at SciFi Symbols. Saw this from the Star Trek Universe and thought I would try to cut it. There were a lot of floaters in the pattern, so I tried to bridge things as I went. If you look close at the center piece, that whole section is held by a very little bridge towards the front, which makes this way too fragile. If I cut this again I'll put another support in the back.

Yep, that would probably be cheaper, but where is the fun in that? :-) For me at at least, the "origination story" behind the coin, smashing/elongating, still gives the pieces a novel back story. The coins are also clad, so it is neat to show the customers that they can still see that clad edge which links it back to the coin. On designs where I keep the outside shape, the ridges from the original coin are also still visible. In a similar manner, it is kind of fun to show someone a nice shiny brass pendant, and tell them the piece was made from a Chucky Cheese token. Some people would like that, some people would think that lessened the novelty. Really depends on the person.

Randy, another very nice piece, I laughed when I read your description on how you elongated the coin. I used to work for the railroad years ago, we would flatten and elongate coins by setting the coins on the tracks, and have the train run over them. We used them to make fishing lures out of, they made great spinners. Len
