  1. Had a request for something on vinyl for a tattoo artist friend so came up with these, Stack cut 3 and sprayed as I wanted, cut with #4 Spiral (no choice with vinyl). I will let him pick the one he wants and offer the others to local charity shop that supplies me with my records to cut.

    Buck on a Coin

This is coin was based on the first scroll saw pattern designed by Julia Harmon, a student at Pensacola Christian College. Pattern is free to the Scroll Saw community. Here is the Pattern: Buck_Julia_Harmon.pdf

    Compound cut Angel

I have been making a lot of compound cut figures using a pattern from Diana Thompson's book. I altered the pattern a bit to make it more robust so it can be used as a toy. Originally designed as an ornament. The halo is a wooden toy wheel.3/4" drilled out a bit. Total height is 4 1/4" made from a two by four.

  4. Stoney recently posted a topic wondering if anyone had experience with the FD XL #7 blade. I had cut a number of compound cut Christmas Ornaments and had noticed differences in how they cut. I thought it might be useful to run a test comparing several blades. The list of blades that were tested are shown below along with a close up picture of the blades. I posted a similar comparison before and someone replied that cutting speed was not the most important criteria for a blade and that other characteristics such as how they turn and how long they last were much more important. While it might be nice to try to compare other characteristics of the blades, I found it would be difficult very time consuming to design and run a test for turning or wear. I hope that the person who suggested this in another post will do a test and post results. I am certain it would be very interesting and useful. For this comparison, it was a simple test of cutting straight along the grain. For the test---- 1. Quarter Sawn Red Oak 1-1/2” thick was used with the cutting direction along the grain. 2. A spring loaded device was made to be able to keep similar pressure on the piece during cutting. The spring provided a similar pressure as I typically use when cutting. 3. The tests were done on a Hegner Scroll Saw with the speed set at maximum 4. Each test consisted of seeing how far each blade could cut in 30 seconds. Multiple tests were done with each blade and the results averaged. The blades tested were as follows – And a picture shows the difference in the teeth. But, the proof is in the cutting…. The PS Woods Super Sharp was the fastest cutting blade of the four. The Pegas Modified Geometry and FD Polar were fairly close in how fast they cut and the FD XL was clearly the slowest. Of course this is not meant to say you should use one blade of another and these results may not be important to you. They are a simple measure of how well these blade cut in thick, tough wood. For me, based on this, I tried cutting compound ornaments with the PS Super Sharp and was very happy with the way it performed especially in oak or ash. In poplar or softer woods, the differences may be small.

    Need a Challenge?

I'm pulling in a few Artist to begin designing patterns for the Scroll Saw Community (focusing on Coins). These pieces can potentially be blown up and cut in wood as well. My designers don't know my limits yet, so they are pushing the boundaries. The image below is blown up considerably, so those "strings" are even thinner than they look. If anyone wants to try this, or blow it up and cut it in wood, let me know as any pattern I'm commissioning will be free to the scrolling community. This pattern designer is Elizabeth Olsen. I like the way she thinks, so I'm excited to see what else she comes up with. ------Randy

Wanted to cut a couple of these and put a request in for a pattern and got a couple good ones. Here are the cuttings. Been busy with Christmas and kept getting pulled away from the saw. They were fun cuts.

    Unfamilair Scroll Saw

That is what my wife paid for my old Delta SS350 with stand back in 2004, still the best entry level saw ever made in my opinion. On many saws like the Micromark the bottom clamps are very difficult to get at, so buyer be aware of their limitations.

  8. Hello! I'm a new member and new to scroll sawing -- as in this week. I design and import cuckoo clocks from Germany. But the design phase has been taking literally years, so I am now starting to do that part here at my farm in Georgia. For my first clock designed here I had a CNC router guy and an award-winning hand carver do the clock as it requires precision and skill. As a quilter I figured I could tackle the prototype design stage myself for other clocks I have on the drawing (Corel Draw) board. Heck, it's just a different material! Between buying a few tools and borrowing a planer (I used it int he aisle of the barn and pointed it toward a stall) and scroll saw -- and thank goodness for You Tube -- here's the first attempt at a Birdwatcher's Cuckoo Clock. The cuckoo door will be in the deciduous tree, there will be a dial, the sun may be bigger and might wink, there will be at least three birds and a squirrel... For a first go-round I am quite pleased. Thanks for all the knowledge I have already gained from all of you on this forum. It's super fun to be working with wood! 10. Since 2004 when i started scrolling I've made the same name less than the fingers on my one hand. It's amazing but true.the exception is Brittany and Stephanie.Theres just so much of a melting pot of nationality's here that it boggles my mind .

  11. Can not believe the Grizzly is that expensive for that saw. Wow. You are seeing the same thing happening now with the excaliber and all the clones of this saw which is basically the Dewalt design. Slap a different sticker on the side of these saws and they come off the same line.

  12. This is definitely not a strict question/answer forum, and I'm pretty glad it isn't otherwise things would get boring around here in a hurry. Conversations go where conversations go. I've found that if someone has something new to add to the original topic of the thread, they will add that comment, regardless of where the overall conversation has shifted. Some of the best conversations have been in threads that have veered. Only kind of veering I don't like is when someone get's offended, and things start to get nasty/personal. Otherwise, I'm happy following a thread wherever it goes, until it doesn't interest me any longer.

  13. I have no knowledge of this saw but, I liked this feature that they list: Blade can be turned 90 degrees for infinite cutting length I mentioned a long time ago on this forum that I thought that would be a nice feature and at least one member of the forum acted like I was crazy and why would I want to be able to do that (even though the same member admitted that they had bent blades 90 degrees to perform the same function). Thanks for sharing the link and God Bless! Spirithorse

  14. I'm in the process of learning portraits. The videos here are very helpful and have great instructional values. It takes time though. And if spend too much time away you have to learn things all over again. I just don't have the time to dedicate to it right now. Be patient dedicated and work slow at it.

Thanks All for comments. I handed over to the church yesterday to say they were happy with it was an understatement. It always great to see peoples faces when they can't believe it was hand cut. They say there could be a unveiling ceremony for it. I think it's a few brownie points for me from the big man upstairs. Roly

    James Dean Funeral

I asked for a pattern to be made of the church were James Dean's funeral was held. It is Fairmount Friends Church in Fairmount, Indiana. My wife helped to restore the stained glass windows (180 of them) working with a company out of Jacksonville IL. Russell (Birchbark) was able to come up with a pattern for me. He said the pictures of the church wasn't very good to make a pattern off of but I think he did a great job! In the picture the round windows look egg shaped but they are 6' D circles. The picture makes them look odd LOL. By far not my best cutting. There isn't a lot of detail but were there is it was hold your breath time. I used a FD #3 UR an FD New Spirals #3. Cut the lines first then cut with the spiral. I am not good enough to cut straight with spirals. Thanks Russell for the help!!

    Unfamilair Scroll Saw

A lot of companies just slap their brand on a these common saws. Same exact saw as this http://www.grizzly.com/products/16-Scroll-Saw-with-Flexible-Shaft-Grinder/G0735. Rikon and others have this exact model with different paint and labels. Many more are built on this same platform without the flexible shaft attachment. I suppose some project types might be ok with this kind of saw, and I'm sure these saws have their devout fans, but for me personally, the agony dished out by this basic design is only exceeded by Proxxon who has no equal in my opinion.

  32. I've had many a good times on inferior saws and never regretted it.If you can stay with a brand name like dewalt, excaliber, hegner, etc. These are $500 and up scroll saws with creature features you appreciate.Up front blade tension,Top arm raises, table angles, accepts straight blades,Quite running ,parts availability,.Look on Craigs list or Offer up under scroll saw.Don't enter scrollsaw as you won't come up with any as on word.and get a used one of quality for what your paying new for and in 20" instead of 16".My 2 cents worth, lol.

  37. Hi, Wayne, Perhaps it really depends on where you live but, in my area wolves have always been very popular and I have always been fascinated with wolf images. Some just look more like dogs than wolves but, some patterns really catch my eye. I don't do many crafts shows but, would make things that appeal to me, take them to work, and usually get a lot of orders. Not necessarily orders for the items I took but, people would say, for example, if you can do a wolf, can you do something like a (insert favorite dog breed here). I think I did sell a total of 5 of the Judy Gale Roberts wolf that Scrollsaw Slasher shows. Some people wanted lighter or darker color variations but, all of the ones I did were stained pine and no variations of the pattern other than the colors. Since I used no exotic wood, I sold them cheap. God Bless! Spirithorse
