I recently posted this Tui plaque and mentioned that I had kept the waste portion since I had got it out in one piece. Here it is, with a couple of small bits removed, sprayed matt black and surface mounted in relief on another piece of rimu. The original cutting has already sold so let's hope this one does too. Happy New Year everyone! Rob4 points

Scrolled bowls with lathe finish
Scrolling Steve and one other reacted to Montserrat for a topic
As a German friend said, turning on the lathe wastes so much wood, that you could make so much more out of. So I scrolled these two thingies yesterday and finished them on the lathe. Now being a total turning novice, they are not quite as great as I would have liked. But I am quite happy with the outcome. The woods are hickory, cherry and mahogany.2 points -
I was also concerned about the halo coming off. I apply it with just white glue. I tried to pull it off and could not. I suspect if this toy is dropped and lands on that halo it may break even though it is a hardwood wheel/halo.2 points

Compound cut Angel
frankorona reacted to Jim Finn for a topic
I have been making a lot of compound cut figures using a pattern from Diana Thompson's book. I altered the pattern a bit to make it more robust so it can be used as a toy. Originally designed as an ornament. The halo is a wooden toy wheel.3/4" drilled out a bit. Total height is 4 1/4" made from a two by four.1 point -

Well as far as blade clamps go.. only way to " upgrade" those is you'd have to replace the lower arm.. as the barrel clamp and the newer clamping is different.. I have both a barrel clamp and a square type clamp with a roll pin through it.. I cannot say either one is any more of a pain to do / learn over the other.. maybe the newer square type one is slightly easier.. The saw in the link looks like a nice saw.. Biggest worries I'd have with it is the motor.. otherwise the saw has the options you most wanted... it is a variable speed one..has the tension lever at the front of the saw.. only thing I see that would get changed.. is I'd upgrade the blower hose and or.. hook up some sort of vac instead of blowing it in the air.. I upgraded my older one to the flex hose and it's long enough to blow the sawdust to the side and or toward the back of the saw.. the way those older hoses are just clamped to the saw aiming the sawdust right toward you was why I upgraded that part on mine.. The kit was bought from Bushton.. but.. to do over and the price of the kit.. I'd probably try to build me a vacuum system instead..1 point

Happy New Year Ray, I hope you have a great year and make tons of saw dust.1 point

What I am trying to determine Kevin is, over the years, each manufacturer adds/changes things on their saws. Without a playbook to go by, it's hard to keeep track of what improvements have been added. So, I figured that those of you who have been using these saws would have kept track of what to look for, what to consider as viable additions, and so on. All those things add cost to bring a saw up to speed. From the point of purchase, how much will a person have to figure on spending to trick out his older saw? Now, if the saw already has all the bells and whistles, the regular buyer wouldn't know it. So, I am asking the question of what you folks see on the saw and what would I have to add to it to bring it up to current day specs. If it is too much, then I might as well just buy a new one. The same questions come to mind with a Hegner. They have some great improvements over the years but to the casual buyer, we don't know what all they are. Thanks to all of you who have replied. It's great to know you are all trying your best to help. Ray1 point

I hope your shop vac is in a different room or you wear ear muffs. They are way too loud for my taste. I know the Festool and Feins are expensive but oh so quiet. I did the same as Sycamore67 on my Hawk except I used mag switches to hold the setup to my table. I also added a trap for the small pieces that get sucked up that I didn't want to lose. I don't use my blower at all.1 point -

too funny, I go to Winners (its like TJMaxx) here in Vancouver Canada and look for cutting boards and odds and ends made of wood from time to time get some good stuff. Have not found olive wood cheap enough yet though...1 point -
Thanks Paul, it sure didn't look right to me either. But man that saw sure does cut nicely. Yes the table is 90 degrees to the saw blade. After I get this dragon cut out (yes my first cut has to be one of my hardest puzzles haha.) I will see if I can figure out which nuts hold the table on the frame.1 point
-
No, that does not look right. Should be centered in the slot in the table. Is the table at 90 degrees to the blade? I am not expert enough to figure an adjustment, from looking at my saw. I guess loosen the nuts that hold the table on and see if the table can be moved over a little. Check the straightness of the upper and lower arms. And send the picture to Advance Machinery and ask them for guidance. They are helpful. And maybe some one on here can help.1 point

Not this one. To me CNC would take all the fun of tweaking it into working out of it! I believe it said the AK-47 has over 150 parts!!1 point

I'm not sure that serial number has the adjustable aggressiveness that the ultras have. Tuesday call bush ton /hawk woodworking they can tell you for sure. I can't get the manuals page to open on my computer and the phone doesn't have enough memory. Fred fret Wichita1 point

Hello everyone, has anyone of you use the zero clearance that came with my Hegner?1 point

That deal seems as good as the previous Hegner deal to me. I would jump on it. It has the front tension release which would be a winner for me.1 point

Great deal! I saw that on craigs when it was posted. I purchased a Hawk in the Springs and another Hawk in Monument. Alas, my shop is full and overflowing. I did mount an led lamp on one hawk and then removed it. There was just enough vibration to look like a soft flickering florescent. Drove me nuts. Short trip. I mounted it on a shelf next the saw. Problem solved. Enjoy that saw!1 point

Cutting a wolf portrait
danny reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
I want to thank everyone for their insights and artwork. I have gain quite a bit of insight here. I'm in the process of getting ready for Easter, Valentines Day and like like. I won't take Intarsia to a craft show since the price would be too much for some of the shows I do. I do take some portraits I do that run in the low triple digits and they really catch a persons eye and interest. I will be adding some wolves to my inventory and see how it goes. Once again thank you very much for sharing all this information and insight. Probably one of the best features about the village, It's members1 point -

general tips for scroll sawing thicker wood
tomsteve reacted to spirithorse for a topic
Hi, Ray, Well done on your project! I think one point that hasn't been made is that the designer may not be a scroller and may not have test cut the patterns. Therefore, some of the patterns we see have areas that are almost impossible. In that case, if the cut is too small to be made it probably isn't that noticeable in the final project to begin with. God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -
