    New Saw

My wife surprised me with a new 16" King saw for Christmas. After using it some since Christmas I am very impressed. My previous saw was an old Craftsman 20" Professional. The difference is amazing. Very little vibration and the noise level is very low. I had done some fretwork clocks and a couple chess sets on the old saw that would have turned out much better on the King. First thing I removed were the top and bottom blade guards. Really enjoy being able to top feed. I was able to center the blade hole up after taking it off to remove the bottom blade guard.

  10. So, I'm running a little behind - not speaking anatomically, of course. Here is my Christmas list. The bighorn sheep is cut from baltic birch for my grandson, born in the year of the sheep (his dad is Chinese). The bighorn sheep cut from padauk is for his Chinese grandmother who was also born in the year of the sheep. The hummingbird cross, also cut from padauk, was a gift to my dear sweet wife to add to her cross wall. I cut two of the next cross, which I call the Trinity Cross (padauk) , for my two daughters. Also cut two of the JesusSaves cross (cherry), one for mother and the other for mother-in-law. The JESUS IS WITH ME cross (cherry) is a hold on to cross for a dear cousin who had many challenges this past year.

  12. This came just in time as I just finished making gifts for my family. I decided to make rather than buy my gifts this year so here they are: for my grandson Yoda, another grandson soccer pic, my daughter alphabet, dil Noel, son eagle, my wife O Holy Night. Thanks to all the designers Steve Good, TD, Scroll Saw Magazine. I modified several to add my personal taste to the designs.

  19. Box for Chef's Knife: This box, a Thiers-Issard chef's knife, and a sharpening stone will be a gift for my 15 year old grandson Ethan who is well on his way to becoming a very good chef. Thiers-Issard is the French company that makes Sabatier knives among other things. First of all, here is a photo of the completed box with its lid off: The box is made of Pau-Ferro wood and is finished with several coats of polymerized Tung oil. Below, I outline the steps I took to make the box. (1) Outlines slightly larger than the knife and the sharpening stone were marked on a board of Pau-Ferro which is slightly thicker (14mm) than the thickest part of the knife's handle. Half circles were added to allow one to easily lift the knife and stone. A thin perimeter (3mm) was also all around the outside of the board. Once cut, the interior of this board will be the middle part of the box and the thin perimeter will be glued to the top of the box in order to form the box edges. I designed patterns for Ethan's name and for the Thiers-Issard logo and glued them to a 2mm thick board which is going to be the top of the box. (2) The two boards were cut appropriately on my scroll saw. (3) After gluing a 1mm piece to the top, I pushed FIMO bake-able clay into the cavities: This was baked for 30 minutes in a 265 degree Fahrenheit oven. After cooling down, the clay saw sanded off to the level of the wood with 120 grit sandpaper. (4) The edge was glued to the top and the middle was glued to a 3mm thick bottom. (5) The edges were roughly sanded with a belt sander in order to make everything uniform and rounded. (6) All parts were further sanded down to 320 grit using both a rotary sander and hand sanding, as appropriate: (7) Several coats of polymerized Tung oil were applied:

  22. Passive Amp for Mobile Phones: I found the design for these on Steve Good's Scrollsaw Worshop. Here are four different views of one such amplifier. Steve does't mention it, but the design only works for phones that have their speaker(s) on the bottom of the phone. This does seem to be the case for the bulk of recent brands and models that I found. The sound from the bottom is passed into the large hollow area withing the disk and then comes out the top. I made one modification to Steve's design. I increased the phone holder part of the design so that it could accomodate the plugs and the bases of the myriad phone brands and models that I looked at the five phone retailers that I visited when doing my research. I made good use Baltic Birch plywood scraps of three differnt thickness (3mm, 6mm, and 18mm). They were sanded to 320 grit, then two coats of satin spray varnish were applied. I made 7 of these, mostly for my children and grandchildren. I don't own a smart phone, so it is no use making one for myself.

  33. I recently seen a couple of topics that mentioned "only a couple people commented " or only a few people even liked my post.. which I've also noticed that sometimes topics are quiet while other are very active.. I come to the village and the first place I check out is the "general scroll saw" topic heading.. I rarely go into the bragging section or most any of the other sections.. sometimes I'll scroll through the list to the bottom of the main forums page and look to see if there is any main topics headings that look interesting.. but rarely open up that main category unless that topic title looks interesting.. then when i do open it.. I find many other topics that look interesting.. Anyway.. I guess I should explore more here.. but for some reason.. I barely go off to the other categories off of the "general" scroll saw talk one.. I read a post the other day somewhere that some people mentioned they mainly go to the bragging section.. which got me thinking about what others main interest here on the village is..?? What part of the village do you visit the most? Maybe this should be a poll of some sort.. me posting this just in the General section might not be seen to those that mainly just go to the bragging or other sections, LOL

  35. I had been planning on making lots of things this winter. And guess what? I've made nothing for several weeks now. There was the cold, there was the weather, there was Christmas, there was good things on the telly, there was the cold, there was several episodes of me and the sniffles, there were several episodes of others having the flu and the sniffles etc. I was using any excuse. I have a granddaughters 1st birthday, an 80th birthday, 2 wedding anniversaries all getting closer so I went out to the workshop this afternoon for the first time in weeks and I got productive. I feel like writing this on Bragging rights (not the items I cut, just the fact that I got off my backside and switched things on). I even used the new table-top belt sander (that I got 2 months ago) for the first time. Bob

    New Saw

Neglected to say that I also removed the dust collector .It may be pretty effective but I found it to be a nuisance when top feeding. The design of it looks like it would work. I may put a 1/4" MDF top on the table to get a zero clearance hole and end up plugging all the dust holes off anyway. Phil

And congratulations on the new saw. I started with a Craftsman and when I upgraded, boy what a different. Enjoy your new saw and happy scrolling.

    Compound cut Angel

I have been making a lot of compound cut figures using a pattern from Diana Thompson's book. I altered the pattern a bit to make it more robust so it can be used as a toy. Originally designed as an ornament. The halo is a wooden toy wheel.3/4" drilled out a bit. Total height is 4 1/4" made from a two by four.

  47. Had a request for something on vinyl for a tattoo artist friend so came up with these, Stack cut 3 and sprayed as I wanted, cut with #4 Spiral (no choice with vinyl). I will let him pick the one he wants and offer the others to local charity shop that supplies me with my records to cut.
