    choking guide

I often get questions if there are any choking pieces in a puzzle which folks are looking at for children. So I researched the government guidelines and came up with this device which I take to shows. A piece is considered chokable by the government if it can fit within the cavity of the device. bb

    21st Request

Had a request for a vinyl with Butterflies to celebrate a 21st birthday so came up with this and as I stack cut 3 I thought I would turn 1 into a clock and the other into a Reggae Butterfly Record

  7. $3,99 from WTB (unless you buy 25 or more then $3.75 each); $3.00 from Iggy and Harvey gets more $ per pattern via Scott's setup. I always prefer to spend my $ where I can get the Artist the most money (why I try to go to the artist's website if they have one) and in this case, that's through Scott's site and still saves me a a dollar (well .99 cents to be exact.) I got my catalog at the end of the week last week. Noticed the spread and noticed that several of those "new" ones they have listed are ones that Harvey did at Scott's request. Now, that's not to say that I didn't see plenty of other things in that catalog that I would like to try one day so WTB will still see some of my money I am sure.

    Heating the Workshop

You all gave me very valid reasons. I can understand now. I suppose if I was all of a sudden a single person again, I might consider moving out of where I am. But, there is so much to say for "convenience". I love the fact that no matter what I need, it's just a few minutes away. And many choices to choose from. So, with said, there are definitely trade-offs. After living in very cold conditions that seemingly went on forever, I choose to live where it's warmer. Maybe, if I was to move from here, it would be to somewhere in Arizona. Not the Phoenix area for sure but maybe midway between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Somewhere that didn't have 6-9 months of COLD. I don't like cold weather. I have a very short thermostat. Somewhere between 65 and 80. I guess home is where you make it. We don't have kids close by and our grandkids are not close to us either. We choose to by with folks of our age group and with similar interests. My perfect spot would be in a Senior Housing situation that had a well outfitted hobby shop area with all the amenities. The closest we came to that was at an RV resort in Mesa Az. while we were full time RVers. They have every hobby you could think of. And the woodshop, well it had over $150 thousand dollars in equipment and a fully stocked lumber room. It was Heaven. The weather there is fantastic until summer rolls around. Then, it's time to hit the road again. I am happy here for the most part. I would love to have some of what you folks have listed too but there is no "perfect" place. Thanks to all who answered my question. At least we are all happy here on the SSV. Thankful for that. Ray

  10. I live out in the boonies.. anyone that comes to my house says it's so peaceful and quiet out here... can hear the birds chirping.. hear old dead trees fall every now and then out in the woods.. which is all that is around me.. the beauty of the fresh fallen snow in the trees is breathtaking along with the cold air .. I grew up in this very house.. have only not lived here for 3 months of my life.. and that was right after I was married we had a small house we rented while looking for a place.. then my parents decided to sell.. probably because I wasn't here mowing the lawn every week.. I have a very large yard.. 4 hours of mowing on a commercial Z mower.. each time.. dad was 70 at that time and it was a bit much for him to keep up with.. No young boys around here with the pants hanging off their rear.. no loud thumpin stereos vibrating my house in the middle of the night.. If a car goes by.. it's either someone lost.. or a neighbor that lives a half mile down the road.. when a car does go by we always stand up to look who it is and wave.. usually the neighbor. Only down side is.. if I need a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk a car part or something.. the nearest store is 10 -12 mile away..

    Looking Back

There have been several threads started that relate to the future of your scrolling.. what you want for the new year of scrolling. I have been thinking of the past year and scrolling and trying to think of some categories of things that may have impacted ones scrolling the most. Here are some of my thought and responses. Others may have different categories but I think it would be fun to list and respond. - The biggest improvement I have made, to make my scrolling more scrolling enjoyable for me: My answer would be my improved dust collection system on my scroll saws. - The project I completed in 2017 I am most proud of: Boy, I have thought about this and it is so hard.. but I guess I will answer, the "Five Dragon Box". Reason, in the past I have concentrated on detail pictures. Doing the detailed box made me know I want to do more of that type of fret work like intricate clocks, and other boxes. Also branch out to into other boxes like Shaker boxes and boxes with inlays and marquetry. - What did I learn on this forum that really has been a help and change for me: I'd say a couple things: Pegas saw blades. The more I try them, the more I like them. Using the adhesive shelf paper instead of blue painters tape. New at this, but liking it. - What item brought you the most requests/business: Couple items I did got me the most attention responses from none scrollers/customers. The 2nd Amendment plaque. Hope I am finishing up my last one this week. The picture of Gus McCrea and Captain Call from "Lonesome Dove". I guess I have really had the most fun with the framing. On the original, I added to the frame a piece with a quote from the book/movie which was from the sigh Gus made for the Lonesome Dove ranch... "We don't rent pigs" and the Latin phrase he put on the sign (no one really seems to know what it means). I have required anyone else that wants a copy of the picture, to come up with a quote for me to the frame. That seem to be a real struggle for them, they have to re-watch the series or re-read the book to come up with one. I do not understand why it is so hard. I am 2/3's the way through the book for the third read of it and I find all kinds of possibilities. When I watch the series again for probably the 7th or 8th time I'm sure I will come up with more...! One of my fondest memories related to the forum and scrolling in 2017: I met and became friends with Heppnerguy. We really enjoyed our visits and phone calls. I hope he feels the same, although he did move to Arizona. Hope meeting me wasn't the reason. As an added bonus I met his daughter, Country Girl, who is a intrasia artist. So there are my "looking back" items. Maybe you have your own. I'd love to read them. Sorry this turned out to be a longer post than I planned.

  13. Hi everybody. I'm working on putting together a listing of pattern vendors. I'm building it in a similar way as I did the Clubs & Organizations section. I'd like to tag pattern makers by the type of work they do. So I'm trying to put together a broad list of types of scrolling. I can use your help. What other categories of scrolling am I missing or should add to the list? Here's what I have so far: Fretwork Portraits Intarsia/Segmentation Inlay/Marquetry Lath Art Compound Cutting Puzzles Toys Home Items Signs Thanks for your help!

Thanks for always trying to make the site fresh and user friendly and a big thanks for asking for input from the members. God Bless! Spirithorse

  30. I messed around with it this afternoon.. and what is happening is.. I'm hitting the set screw thinking I have the blade all the way back but it's not.. Figured it was user error.. Like I said.. I've only cut the couple ornaments out and that was it.. I need to get this thing set up and use it..

  31. So you replace the lever? or just take the thing apart and replace that plastic bushing? I looked in my manual but the exploded parts view is a little less confusing as to what is really in there.. I'll have to call Bushton and talk to them.. I'm sure they know exactly whats going on and what I need to order.. Thanks JT

  41. I'm thinking of the projects which the use of the scroll saw is secondary. Yes, a scroll saw is used for some aspect of the item, but that aspect is secondary. One word that springs to mind for this is "Embellishment". These shelves that I made last year for a great nephew might qualify as one such project:

Pete, you do some amazing work, and these four pieces are perfect examples of that work. I do have one issue with a couple of these pieces though, and it's the eyes. The eyes of the horse and the two rotweillers, being so dark don't look right to me. Len

    Heating the Workshop

When natural gas isn't an option it is more important than ever to have a well insulated shop to keep heating cost within reason. Using an electric heater of any kind is most likely the most expensive source of heat although propane also ranks right up there. Also if the shop has a concrete floor that presents another issue. Like Jay said getting ones feet elevated is a good idea. Using a paddle fan to bring the rising heat back down from the ceiling is also useful.

    Heating the Workshop

I cannot pipe gas to my shop because of much difficulty going from one end of the house to the other end where the garage is. Too much of a concrete barrier. I do have and use a propane heater that uses the small canisters of which I still have a couple. They heat very well but I have gone through too many small bottles. They do not last long.
