  1. Here is the first completed cut of the new year. It is my first time stack cutting something this detailed but it went just fine. The wood is 1/8 cherry? I think. FD 2/0 spirals. I'm not sure how I will frame them yet. I finally found a roll of the adhesive shelf tape that so many people on the site have recommended, and THANK YOU. It will be the only thing I use for fret work from now on. The pattern came off in less than 3 minutes and all in one piece except for one tiny sail.

    4 New Local Items

Last year I came up with the CAROLINA BEACH sea turtle and the KURE BEACH dolphin. They were very popular here on our island. So, I had Harvey flip flop them and also had him do mermaids for each town. This is the result. I also have mermaids for SOUTHPORT and WILMINGTON (nearby beach and city). I'll have an entire area on my display tables devoted to these tourist/specialty items I also had Harvey do the Pelicans for me for each town. I'll cut them tomorrow.

    Miniature birdhouses

These are addictive. I've started doing more shaping of the birds but those guys are tiny and difficult to hold. I'm not great at painting but I hope to improve. I give them to my wife for Brownie points.

    Captain Mal

Here's one I did that started out as a wood burning by a friend. I turned it into a pattern and ran. It's about 16 inches tall. One of my favorite cuts. I'm going to find him and see if he'll sign it!

    3 New Ones... for me

Three new ones I haven't cut before that I'll display in 2018. Just received some new custom ones from Harvey a few minutes ago that I'll cut over the weekend specifically for the local tourists. I'll share when they're done.

    Heating My Shop Again

Yessiree, got er done. I've tried a milk-house heater, small propane heater and a parabolic heater all without much luck. The worst part in addition to being ineffective I always had to step around them which is a PITA in a small shop. The shop is 1/3 partitioned off in a two car garage. One wall is common with the kitchen, two walls are common to the garage and one outside wall with window. All walls are insulated. I direct the heater towards the outside window wall. I suspended the heater so it can be rotated . Many of the heaters I looked at were more expensive and many did not come with cord, thermostat or on/off switch. Those were a bit higher wattage and had to be wired with a cord and plug. This little unit is ready to be plugged in. Just mount a 220 outlet. Temperature was about 45 degrees. With the garage door up and the double doors in the shop open it warmed the shop up to60 degrees in about 15 minutes. Of course it was trying to heat the garage too.

    Looking Back

There have been several threads started that relate to the future of your scrolling.. what you want for the new year of scrolling. I have been thinking of the past year and scrolling and trying to think of some categories of things that may have impacted ones scrolling the most. Here are some of my thought and responses. Others may have different categories but I think it would be fun to list and respond. - The biggest improvement I have made, to make my scrolling more scrolling enjoyable for me: My answer would be my improved dust collection system on my scroll saws. - The project I completed in 2017 I am most proud of: Boy, I have thought about this and it is so hard.. but I guess I will answer, the "Five Dragon Box". Reason, in the past I have concentrated on detail pictures. Doing the detailed box made me know I want to do more of that type of fret work like intricate clocks, and other boxes. Also branch out to into other boxes like Shaker boxes and boxes with inlays and marquetry. - What did I learn on this forum that really has been a help and change for me: I'd say a couple things: Pegas saw blades. The more I try them, the more I like them. Using the adhesive shelf paper instead of blue painters tape. New at this, but liking it. - What item brought you the most requests/business: Couple items I did got me the most attention responses from none scrollers/customers. The 2nd Amendment plaque. Hope I am finishing up my last one this week. The picture of Gus McCrea and Captain Call from "Lonesome Dove". I guess I have really had the most fun with the framing. On the original, I added to the frame a piece with a quote from the book/movie which was from the sigh Gus made for the Lonesome Dove ranch... "We don't rent pigs" and the Latin phrase he put on the sign (no one really seems to know what it means). I have required anyone else that wants a copy of the picture, to come up with a quote for me to the frame. That seem to be a real struggle for them, they have to re-watch the series or re-read the book to come up with one. I do not understand why it is so hard. I am 2/3's the way through the book for the third read of it and I find all kinds of possibilities. When I watch the series again for probably the 7th or 8th time I'm sure I will come up with more...! One of my fondest memories related to the forum and scrolling in 2017: I met and became friends with Heppnerguy. We really enjoyed our visits and phone calls. I hope he feels the same, although he did move to Arizona. Hope meeting me wasn't the reason. As an added bonus I met his daughter, Country Girl, who is a intrasia artist. So there are my "looking back" items. Maybe you have your own. I'd love to read them. Sorry this turned out to be a longer post than I planned.

    Beginner questions

Wow guys thanks for the answers! Lots of different ideas to think over and put in practice. I have a Dayton 16” variable speed. It seems like it’s doing a good job for now. I would really like one that the upper arm folds out of the way now that I know that exists lol. Any ideas on the vinyl click together flooring?

  14. Hello all, glad to be joining you all here on the forum. I'm new to the hobby, just bought an old craftsman 16" from eBay, and ask inspired but what I've seen. Originally I planned on doing mostly toys, a few boxes and bowls, but the more i research this hobby the more i like the idea of intarsia. I'm from the metro Detroit area of Michigan, an engineer by training and an avid fan of crafted items. Due to medical reasons most of my hobbies are not vary viable, lost my left leg to infection, so I've decided to pickup woodworking as a hobby. My interests go beyond just scroll sawing, hope to get into furniture crafting long term, but I've found that saw at a good price, have grandkids starting to come and want to make stuff for them. I'll quit rambling about me and say I look forward to sharing with you all and hope to learn from your critiques. GFHWoodwerks (AKA Gregory)

  18. It is real nice to be able to scroll outside and having the sun keeping you warm, but not for this week coming. We have a cold front moving in and the temperature next week around high 40 and low 50 a heck better that at my home in Ottawa Canada. Any way here is some of the stuff that I cut last week.

Isn't that the way it always goes?I had folders of beautiful beach scene names ready to print out and cut.Saving me the trouble of painting the same name again which took 45 minutes each letter,31 things to each letter. And don't you know that after 2 years of saving pictures the same name never came up and that's way back in 2004.Just to many different names and i find them all !Live an learn

    Beginner questions

Welcome to this GREAT FORUM and I don't mean to hijack your post/question but I think we newer scrollsawers will all learn from this. Now I have a question for all of you who frame your work: Would you please elaborate a little on what kind of framing you make/use which hides the edges of BB plywood? would you please show some pictures? Thank you all Sam

    What a surprise

So, back, early in 2017 my life got really crazy, so much so that scrollsawing took a back seat. I had just moved into a new house and trying to set up some sort of shop in the basement. Here it is, January 2018 and things are slowly coming together. I finally had a chance to sit down and catch up with a few issues of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts. After talking them out of the plastic I grabbed Spring 2017 and started looking thru. Did I ever get a surprise on page 8. There is a picture of a clock I had done in the summer of 2016. I started to read the info on the picture and "BAM". I surprised to learn that I had submitted the photo. Heck, I don't even remember sending it in. Just a great way to end a long day of putting together a Scrollsaw shop. Hope to get back "in the saddle" by the end of the month. Sure have missed making nice looking firewood.....lol. Chris

    Sold on Pegas

Ok I gave the Modified Geometry #5 a try today. A lot of you said they are good and you are right! I tried it out on a 3/4" purple heart puzzle. Thinking if they cut this they will cut anything. Cuts like I was cutting into 1/2" popular. Could not get over how fast it when thru the wood! Doesn't seen to have as much draft on the blade as the FDs do. This took a little time to get use to not feeding the wood in the same angle as I am use to. But is going to be my go to blade for compound and thick wood.
