Phantom Scroller and 4 others reacted to Runa for a topic
Hello everyone, Happy New Year to everyone. I have been away for a while and been dealing with the BIG changes coming my way on personal front (Iam going to be a single mom to a 3 year old). I was finally able to sort off finish off this project that I started as an experiment to see how it turns out. What do you think? Would this have a market?5 points -

Spiral Basket
Lucky2 and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
This is a Steve Good pattern that I enlarged by 35%. I used 1/4" Red Oak plywood. The approximate size is 8" in diameter and 2 3/4" high. I used FD UR #3 blades and finished with spray Shellac. This was one fun basket to make. Very easy to cut. Placement of each ring had to be exact to get the spiral effect. Comments welcome.3 points -
Guardian Eagle -- Finished!

I'm am adding this here from the "Works in Progress" forum hoping to get some more comment. I'm thinking about donating this to the "Friends of the NRA" banquet along with the 2nd Amendment plaque they request from me. I'd like to add some red, white and blue some where to it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. "Completed the cutting of this picture called "Guardian" and is a Charles Hand pattern. I've been playing around with it and the backer. Someway I want to do the backer/frame in red, white and blue. like the American flag. Not quite sure if that is going to work out or not. I have sorta/kinda a picture in my pea brain, but not sure how to work it out."2 points -

So Neptune posted this pattern awhile back in the new pattern thread. I loved it the moment I saw it. Here is what l did with it. Asian acacia engineered flooring sample, backed by a babies crib board, framed with a babies crib frame. Love the pattern, also love how this turned out. Thanks Neptune! It's heavy!!!!2 points

For the price of new blades I would not bother. I'd dump them or give them to someone who is beginning.2 points

Official Time Test - Hawk -vs- DeWalt
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
I think for most of us speed is not important. The only reason I did a cutting test on thick wood is because I was doing compound cut ornaments and was looking for a better blade. Doing any proper test with meaningful results given all the variables would be way beyond my capability and desire to perform. My test was gave me the answers I needed. Would it be applicable on a different saw....who knows. I guess if someone is cutting 1600 similar type puzzles it might be important but also how well the blade allows turning, how long the blade lasts, the effect on my hands, etc, etc, etc....... This is why the debate on blades, saws, aggressiveness of the saws will be just that.2 points -

Len do not be afraid to jump in. It is not anything here that is gospel. I probably took Iggy's original posting and took it down a different path but that is what we do. Maybe I am or maybe I did miss the entire point. I just could not and still can not see the justification of speed when scrolling anything. I understand all the desires to meet deadlines and order numbers and quantity numbers but they are just numbers. No one is holding a gun to these guys heads telling them to do it or else. So many factors go into doing tests against saws. If someone knows of tests like this that have been done against the top brand names I would be interested in reading. I posted this question on another forum trying to get outside info because I have never seen testing like this. Come on in and play. No right or wrong answers.2 points -
I myself would just throw away the rusted blades, not worth the time and money to try and clean them up, RJ2 points

If you have a friend who has a micrometer, or can get a decent used one at a flea market, you can measure thickness and width of a blade. That, with the tooth count, compare against the blade charts from Olson or FD and that should give you an idea of what is in each tube.2 points

This is a great idea Travis. I was wondering to myself today it that would be possible.2 points

New Feature - Pattern Shops
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Travis for a topic
Howdy All. I'm happy to introduce a new section on SSV for Pattern Shops! This is a directory of places to find pattern vendors on the web; both paid & free. We all have our favorite pattern shops bookmarked, now we can share those with other scrollers. Each shop has their own page with useful information, such as Website, Designer's Name, Free or Paid Patterns, Pattern Types, and Additional Information. It also has an area for comments/reviews. So if you have bought a pattern with a particular shop, share your experiences with the rest of us. Right now, the Pattern Shops list is located under the Resources tab (It will probably move in the future when I re-organize the Nav Bar). Check out our growing list. If you don't see your favorite pattern shop listed, add it by clicking the green button that says "Add A New Pattern Shop." (Be sure to double-check to make sure it's not there already. We don't want double entries.) If there's misinformation on that pattern shop's listing, you can easily change it by clicking the "Update Shop Information" button on that shop's page. If you have your own pattern shop, be sure to add yourself (or update your information if you're already listed). It's also worth noting that there is a nice area called Additional Info where you can add extra information that potential customers may find useful. (Hint: Add a promo code for an SSV discount so you can track much traffic SSV has sent your way.) You can also include pictures, logos, etc. Anyway, I hope y'all find this useful. Enjoy!1 point -

I got tired of looking at my growing collection of "scrap wood" yesterday. I sorted it all by wood type and size and started applying different patterns that I have that will fit. I'm finally going to get rid of it and make some nice stuff in the process. Ill get started after my coffee. Feel free to stop in for a cup. Pot is always on.1 point

I would also love to see a longevity test and would like to see the test procedure. Trying to determine an end point will be difficult. To be meaningful you need to measure things accurately. It is so difficult to design an experiment like this keeping all variables constant except one.1 point -
Is there a way to identify saw blades?
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Would not hurt them if you dip in jewelry cleaner if the wife will let you have some. Then as mentioned run through a piece of scrap wood a little thicker than what you will be using for a quick time.1 point -

Travis, I am a little confused when completing the forum for pattern shops. On choice is "Mostly Paid some Free" below is the choice "Most Paid" What the difference between the two. What is "Mostly Paid" or what.....Should that be all paid, or is that for like at Alex Fox's site he usually has a special where there is a selected pattern that you will get free if you buy two others?1 point

Slow hesitant start on Hegner
Jim Finn reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
https://advanced-machinery.myshopify.com/pages/about-usYes. milliseconds. It is called soft start. Many routers or at least the better ones incorporate that technology. Just a nuance with Hegner. After awhile you do not even pay attention to it.1 point -
For what you do, I'm really surprised you didn't go the EX or Seyco route. If I were in your shoes as a production cutter, and needed the aggression, I would be on the EX/Seyco in a heartbeat as the mechanics are very similar to the 788, except that you can adjust aggression to more or less than what you have on the 788 (while keeping the blade perpendicular), there is already a mechanism to hold the arm up, and they seem to last longer than the 788s. For you puzzles, it looks like the EX 16" would work. For highly intricate stuff, even the minimal blade travel I get on the EX (tuned for minimal aggression) is sometimes more than I like. The Hawk has other challenges for me, but I've set it up as my primary for coin cutting for now to see if I can make it work. But, after my testing, I suspect the EX will remain my coin cutting saw because of how it performs with very small delicate blades, but we shall see. I don't think there is "One" saw that is better than every other saw at everything. I think you have to match the saw to your own needs which are affected by your specific project types, your cutting style, and other requirements specific to your needs. -----Randy1 point

Official Time Test - Hawk -vs- DeWalt
Lucky2 reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
JT is very correct about muscle memory and being used to a saw. You have a long history of use on one saw versus the new one. While your test may be applicable to you, it is not generally applicable to everyone. So if the one saw is so much faster, are you going to sell the other one as it costs you 53 hours. There was no real need for this comment...yes I know you put a smiley after it but....1 point -
