Just got the pattern removed. Took me 2 hours, to remove it, I think for this kind of detail cutting I will go back to painters tape instead of the clear shelf liner. This is a Charles Hand pattern. I took off about 1/2" of the pattern all the way around, which really only left out some of the brush. This gave me more border for the piece of wood I used. Now I see I didn't get my borders the same all the way around. Still trying to figure how I managed that. I will fix when I decide how I want to frame it. Cut in Basswood. Mr. Hand has nice patterns.

  2. My wife, who plays dulcimer, saw the 2018 spring edition SSW and loved the trinket box patterns....She asked if I would try the pick shaped one for her to store her many dulcimer picks....This is the result...used what i had on hand, BB and cherry,,,,I have to say it was a first for me...My first attempt at inlay and flocking......Thanks to Dave Monk for help with questions about the inlay...Flocking was not that difficult and enhances the inside of the box......The most important thing is the wife likes it !.....Comments welcome, Steve.

    Paddling Moose

Took a while - but these are finally done ..... This is my second "batch" of these guys - this time around I departed from the original pattern to better fit our towns theme as the Canoe Capital of Canada. So instead of a kayak there is a canoe, instead of a kayaking double blade paddle there is a traditional single blade paddle. Neither did I include the hanger for the Christmas tree - they are made to sit flat and be displayed (hopefully) year round. They are a pain to make - but their desirability makes the effort worthwhile ..... kinda ..... sorta ...... every couple years or so ...... maybe .... Thanks to Ruth Chopp for the original design - hope she doesn't mind the changes I've made. Jay

  4. Since I’m trying to warm up and also trying to package up orders I thought I’d take a minute and show what I do for clock hands to keep them from damage during shipping. This is like 1-1/4 inch rubber hose. I buy cheap cutoffs or end of the roll where they are odd sized and probably wouldn’t sell well to the average person. Local hardware saves these for me . I cut them so they fit over the hands and use rubber bands to hold it in place. Been doing this for years. Stated with cpvc pipe that I had left over but you have to put something under that to prevent scratches etc. so far the rubber hose works good. That the daily tip from KevsKrafts

  5. Results of Pegas Clamp Testing: Decided on using an IOS app called Seismometer on the Iphone. (http://yellowagents.com/seismometer) This app records the numerical data so we can get a qualitative measurement The phone was placed exactly at the same place on the table for each long duration test. Since the saw takes a few seconds to reach speed and stabilize, there are some variations in data at those speed changes, so to counter I started the saw and let is stableze before I started gathering data, then if the data was skewed for the first few seconds or the last few. There is some technical nastiness I had to juggle to get the results, but in short, I wrote some code to translate the raw data to a systematic measure of peak to peak amplitude. Basically, higher amplitude, the more vibration. Long duration testing ran for about a minute so that any variances would Balance out. Speed changes tend to upset the balance for a few seconds, so I eliminated skewed data where the speed changed. My EX doesn’t have speed reference marks, but the numbers on a clock line up pretty good, so I cut out a clock face, cut out the center, taped it over my dial with 1 being the lowest speed, and top speed just happens to land exactly on 11. Vibration starts kicking in 6, but stays about the same until 8, then starts getting more dramatic after that, so I decided to use 7, 9, 10, and 11 as my speeds to use for comparison points. There is one particularly important thing to understand about changing the weight of these components, when you add or subtract weight, you may move the point of harmonic resonance. When I tested the heavier Hegner knob on the original clamps, I saw increased vibration, except at one point, where resonance had made vibration with the lighter clamp higher. In the results chart below, just know, the higher the number, the more vibration. Speed All Original Original with Hegner Knob All Pegas Pegas with Hegner Knob 7 15.0 14.4 12.1 10.7 9 35.1 34.3 20.2 20.5 10 29.0 31.8 28.1 45.6 11 39.8 37.7 35.1 42.2

  6. I've got 3 I use, but I have 5. My Hawk Bm 26 is my workhorse. Nearly everything is done on him. I've got a Hitachi CW - 40 I use & I keep a #5 blade in it. I've also got a 16" Craftsman. It's the back up. I've got a hardware store breed saw set up when my for when my bride takes a notion to saw. & the single speed Craftsman in pieces I learned on. It is addiction! But frustrating when you're in the middle of a project & have a breakdown!:

    Why multiple saws?

I have 2 EX-21's. One for winter use in the basement and one in the garage for summer use. Garage isn't heated, and MN summers are too short to be hanging out in the basement. I also have a Type 1 DeWalt, but I promised that to a nephew I'm looking into buying either a Hegner or a Hawk. Why? Because Iike the others are saying, it's an addiction.

  8. I got 2.Ex16, the reason is we are snowbirds so I did not want to move my saw with me but I need to keep busy for the 3 or 4 months south during the winter. I found a used Ex16 for a very good price soI bought it and she came with me in Florida. So happy scroller when I am in the South, wife can go at the beach andI can make sawdust.

    Why multiple saws?

Once the scrolling bug bites, the thought of not being able to scroll if your main saw breaks down is too awful to contemplate. Been there, done that and now have a backup saw. Rob

    Why multiple saws?

I had as many as 3 for a while, now down to just the one. I had the extras "just because". I had gotten used hegnar, but did't have the time to put in some maintenance to really make it sing, so I kept my old one. Then I got a deal on an Excalibur so I had 3. I had the room in my shop at the time so I would use them all depending on my mood. I sold the Hegnar at one point and then later got rid of the old porter cable when I got divorced and didn't have the room.

  14. Sorry I've asked so many questions lately - one more then I'll stop.... Why do some of you have multiple saws? Are they each for a specific purpose or do you just keep upgrading and keep the old one? Thanks in advance

  15. As I've always been into puzzles, that's what I chose to cut and sell the past 18 months. I've tried putting them in shops/stores but they haven't done well and that's because they need to be shrinkwrapped as the stores of course don't want to have pieces of wood getting scattered around. But what happens is people don't grasp the concept of them being puzzles since they can't handle them, take them apart, etc. and sales have always sucked versus when I sell them at craft events and everyone can handle them and I can make my pitch. I finally had a brainstorm... I'm slow sometimes... What about doing them as non-puzzles and they can be displayed unwrapped and ready to go. I cut 2 of them today and will be showing them to my "focus group" (friends) and get their feed back. One of them is a shopowner that has some of my puzzles on display (2 of them unwrapped). This may be a new avenue to go down and be able to put them in various gift shops here in town. We'll see... Maybe it's my sales pitch that actually sells them. ;-) Iggy

  16. Thanks, yep, using digital downloads. The delivery of the patterns isn't the issue. I'm trying to display/show each pattern for buyers so they can see what it looks like, but it can't be in a format that they can simply right click and SAVE AS and snatch it for free.

  17. Could you do something like this. Your main picture is under 200px. That makes it difficult to blow up and still get details. Then for the second picture, have it about 400px that's zoomed in to show some details so they can see what they're getting.

  18. Thanks, I was actually chatting with Charles earlier and had him playing around with one of the patterns to try to skew it, watermark it, etc. He was helpful and I'm still brainstorming with him.

  22. I love my EX-21 - since I do, mostly, intarsia, I dcon't have to worry about the constant blade connect/disconnect that fretwork cutters do. If I do have fretwork or inlay involved - I'm a bottom feeder, so a top feeding saw doesn't impress me. What I like, most, about the EX is the head tilts - not the table. When I'm cutting rings for my bowls, I have a nice flat surface to cut with. The only Con I have with the saw is the bottom blade clamp. I'm a chronic over-tightener, and I keep spreading the darn things. I have to replace about once a year. Having said all of that, if you want to look into a new saw - go find one, sit down, and try cutting some things. I know scroll saws are not the most common tool on the market, but vendors do carry them. And wood working shows do demonstrate them. Wood working clubs have them and even some schools have them. Maybe someone on the forum lives somewhat close enough they would be kind enough to let you try theirs. Finding a new saw is a fun thing, but I have found if you ask 12 people about the best saw - you'll get 12 conflicting opinions.

  23. Each of us works in different ways. I have one scroll saw, but 5 routers and am considering a 6th. I've accumulated over 2 dozen hand planes for some reason. When I bought my EX-21 a couple years ago, I considered keeping my Dewalt. Frankly if I had more room in my shop, it would have been a no brainer. But being space constrained and having a willing buyer within the extended family, made it an easy decision to sell it. Bottom line is most of us have multiples of certain tools because we can.

    Box of cut offs

Was realizing last night that i need to do some spring cleaning in my garage soon and I thought you folks would like to see this box of cut offs from my scroll saw projects. Please note that I placed a meter stick along the ledge and from top to bottom so you can see it's a full size trunk. Lots of work to do....I think I may have a problem... Lol Did not know where to post it but thought it would be fun to post here with the hope of others sharing photos and brag of thier scrap wood piles just for kicks. Curious to see Kevins pic...

Pass on this saw, parts are no longer available for it. It is no longer supported by Excaliber, and I don't know if parts are interchangeable from the newer saws. Len

It is old, looks to be in good condition. You probably would not be able to get some of the parts for it anymore, i.e., that motor and the linking in the arms,,, don't make 19" anymore. However if it runs good, it should last a long time. For $200, ya you could get $200 worth of work out of it. The blade clamps are the part of the machine that maybe is replaced most often, if the modern ones would fit it,, You could call Seyco and ask.

I get on here to see what ever' body is up to, & light up a post with my country boy learnin' & experience now & then. The friendship here, & close brotherhood of sawyers that pull together when one of us is in need of support is one of the main reasons I stay here. Thank you again for all your thoughts & prayers. I'll keep you posted as things go along. God Bless & keep makin' sawdust!

  31. The price made me buy them. My 226 came about because I needed a larger saw than the 220 for the projects such as my mirrors and shelves I was making at the time. Now it is my backup. The Dewalt fell in my lap so to speak. Would never had bought it but deals a deal. The Hegner was a deal I could not pass up at a woodworking show. and had that before the RBIs . Have that now for my angle cutting. Had a dremel before that but sold that for a few $$$. Please do not ask how many routers I have. Lost count for sure.

I have two. One as a backup, but I also ocaisionally give private lessons in my shop, so it's good to have the second saw.

  33. Yeah, I'm with Scrappile, I like playing with saws, and enjoy figuring out how to efficiently operate each of them. There is no rational justification. To myself, I can always say, "well at least I don't have near as many as Rick Hutchinson.

    Why multiple saws?

I had a Delta P20 and it was a very good saw but they quit supporting it so I gave that one to my grandson. It was still in good working order but I was concerned about being able to get replacement parts. I now have a Hegner Multi-Max 22v and a old craftsman I bought at a garage sale for $25.00 for a backup. If my Hegner goes down and I need to finish a project before I get it up and running the Craftsman will do in a pinch. I have a small shop so I don't have room for more scroll saws. If I find a good deal on a better backup saw I would replace the Craftsman.

  35. I just look for deals too good to pass up. At some point, I'll have to sell something. I still would like a Hawk and an Ex-21. Then I can really see the difference. Not that I ever cut much. Someday, I'm going to get away from the computer and go out to my shop. Someday. Ray

  38. I think the only thing better than having two saws would be to have three! If I ever come across a RBI that is a great buy, I will own it! Then I like to have at least 3 drill presses each with a different size bit in it..... than, I hate changing blades on a band saw, maybe several of those also....You just cannot have too many tools....

  39. 5 weeks ago this coming thursday, I had two heart attacks & a lung embolism. They flew me out of here to a bigger hospital with a Cardiologist & all the fancy equipment to figure out what was going on. That's when they broke the news to my bride about the two heart attacks & my lungs. He said my lungs had 2 large blood clots in them, & a smaller one that was going to have to come out that day. The way the Cardiologist explained it to us was the left side of my heart & lungs were getting no oxygen what so ever. Basically, he said, I was slowly dieing. Those clots had to come out that day, no matter what! He said on top of the heart attacks, those are an emergency. So, 6:30 that evening, we were in the heart cath room to remove the blood clots. It goes without saying, it has been a rough 5 weeks. in & out of the hospital 3X, bad weather here, all that took a lot out of me. And my bride wound up with the flu, & has been tryin' to look after me. We have home health nurses comin' in for PT & meds. In the mean time, this bein' the only site I visit, I get on here & see what everybody is up to, as I'm not able to get back in my shop yet. I'd like to say I may sound a little out of sorts at times, but that's not any of you. That's the ol' truck driver in me. Thank you all for your friendship, & bein' here to just be friends. All I'm askin' is throw a prayer our way on occasion, & let me hang out when I can, & post now & then. I'll keep you posted as this goes along. Thank you again for the friendship & brotherhood! It has been part of what's keepin' me goin'! God bless & keep makin' sawdust!
