  1. heppnerguy rattled my cage about this pattern a few weeks ago and said he was waiting to see it cut. So Dick, here it is. Was only 42 cuts. Found the pattern on Pinterest last year and really liked it. It is from Kandicraft on Deviant.art. Jeff

  4. Like a lot of folks I started off standing. After a while I grabbed a bar stool and found it more comfortable. After a few customer complaints the bartender banned me from scrolling at his bar. OK, seriously I do have a shop stool that is adjustable that I use.

  7. Just joined the group, I have been learning the scroll saw for roughly a year now. I am from Ely, MN but I have been stationed in Japan for 2 years, I do woodworking in my free time and bought a scroll saw since it has always interested me. Here are my recent projects:

  9. The beer mug was just for me to try to get my feel back after a year long break. I made the Cow Pi for the young lady we bought our house from last year. Her folks owned a dairy farm near here and needed her to come back to help run it. It has been in her family for 6 generations. The silly leaf was for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter.

    Saved a vase

I made this vase a while ago. I saw a meme on FB that said "Nude Art is Not Pornography." I contacted the artist, Francois Dubeau, and asked for permission to use his drawing for a scrolled vase which he granted on the condition that I didn't sell it. Anyway, I wasn't thrilled with how it initially came out and it sat around for a while and I came back and filled the fretwork with Filo and liked it much better. The surface wood in African Wenge and the inner layer is walnut and poplar. The vase design is based on a Steve Good design that I modified.

  14. Just had some time to try out the new FD blades that were delivered a few weeks ago.........Holy Cow!!!......what a huge difference than the blades from the big box store, that I was using. The first turn I made with the FD, the blade felt like it made a hard quick turn / cut all by itself........it turned fast!!!! At times it felt as if the blade was pulling the wood into it all by itself. I really, really like the FD blades.

  15. Add another one in for sitting. I have a bar stool type that can adjust the height up and down.

  16. I have to sit due to back problems. I use a drafting stool, which is height adjustable and has wheels for rolling it from the scroll saw to the lathe to the workbench to the ..... I try to get the working height of all my tools the same to reduce the times I have to adjust the height of the stool. I also like to sit fairly high to make getting on and off of the stool easier.

  17. Sit, want to be comfortable when cutting. Only stand when cutting a large piece and need to maneuver it around some.

  19. Depends on what saw I'm using and how ambitious I feel.. At the DeWalt saw I sit.. the rest of the saws are missing the stool, LOL ... I do move the stool from saw to saw sometimes however the other saws are different height and the stool is too tall.. or maybe it's the saw is too short, .. But to really answer the question.. I prefer to sit.. I just haven't adjusted the stands, foot peddle, and stools to make them work best for me.. but if I'm cutting for the whole day or something then I do move the stool.. but just playing around for a bit on one of the other saws.. I stand....

  20. For the life of me I don't know how anyone can stand and cut with a scrollsaw! That does not seem natural to me even though everyone stands to use a miter saw, table saw, band saw, etc. It just would not work for myself and that is the way I started, seating down on a stool than updating to an office chair or draftsman chair. At the time I knew of no other woodworker around the vicinity so I self taught myself and it was just natural to be seated. Erv

  24. Both of these saws were great in their day. I would never pay more than a few dollars for a saw that parts will become an issue. Not used to looking at Kijiji, but didn't see that much there that was a good deal. Also checked the Craigslist for Ontario, not much better. The Dewalts listed were stupid high (600 Canadian translates to 475 U.S), we can often find it new for close to that price here. With the options available to you on Kijiji, I would go for the cheapest delta (like $150 Canadian) and see if you can get the seller to come way down on that price, then save for the Excelsior which is one of your better options in Canada.

  25. I never put tape or liner on plywood because of the potential on lift off of splinters. I learned the hard way. I attach directly to the wood with 3M Super 77 and remove with mineral spirits.

  26. I prefer to sit. I'm more relaxed and comfortable. That results in a better scrolling experience, for me.

  27. When I first started I stood. Now I sit in a modified stool that I shortened about 2 inches. Much easier on the back and shoulders and neck.

  28. I used to use the blue painters tape, but had too many problems with it lifting splinters off the wood, so I switched to just applying the pattern directly to the wood and to remove I put a light coat of Mineral spirits on a rag and wiping over the pattern. It comes right off. Don't know about the whole shelf liner thing, seems like an unnecessary expense to me. Then again you have to go with what works best for you.

  32. So far, I sit at my Dewalt and stand at my Hegner. I may end up putting the Heg down low so I can sit in the same chair for both. My chair is a cast off office chair that I brought home and cleaned up. It just fits both my shop and my butt. Ray

  33. When I first started scrolling, I stood. Mainly because I didn't know any better and didn't have a decent chair to sit in, in the shop. I built a stand for my 1st scroll saw and made it a comfortable height for scrolling while standing. After awhile, I acquired a stool and tried sitting. My stand was too tall, so I put the stool on a wooden platform to raise it up. It was less than ideal. Several years later I upgraded to a Dewalt, which came with a stand. It was then that I committed fully to sitting while scrolling. I was lucky enough to snag an an adjustable, swivel stool from work that was getting tossed out. It needed some new upholstery and the back rest keeps working loose, but it is the ideal shop stool, for me. I've been sitting ever since. My stool has wheels, so I can move from the scroll saw to bench work easily and adjust the height as required. Getting a good stool is the key.

  38. I sit. No way my back could handle standing for the long periods I sometimes spend at the saw. That said I try and make sure I get up every thirty minutes or so and walk around a bit to keep the blood flowing.

    Stack cutting?

I use regular masking tape around the sides. Holds well gets thrown out once cut. There are many ways to do this. Try different ones and find the one that works best for you.

    Stack cutting?

I put my stack together ( blanks cut all the same size ) with the top piece covered with shelf liner and then use packing tape apply about 1/4 - 1/2 inch onto the top board and then stand the stack up and get them all lined up with each other.. fold the tape over the edge and around to the back side.. repeat all for sides.. only way I've ever done it..

    Stack cutting?

If cutting portraits, I use blue painter tape on the edges only. If cutting items from within, like ornaments, I use hot glue on the edges.
