I was in a pinch for some 1/8" dowels. I really wanted them made from padauk. I just tossed some thin scraps in the burn barrel. I pulled a piece out, ran it through the band saw to get a 3/16" x3/16" x 6" piece. Took that to the sander with 36-grit belt, and in a few seconds had a fairly round 1/8c dowel. I hand sanded to 180-grit and checked it with me guage. For thin dowels that are very close to round this was very fast and easy.3 points

The beer mug was just for me to try to get my feel back after a year long break. I made the Cow Pi for the young lady we bought our house from last year. Her folks owned a dairy farm near here and needed her to come back to help run it. It has been in her family for 6 generations. The silly leaf was for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter.2 points

I made this vase a while ago. I saw a meme on FB that said "Nude Art is Not Pornography." I contacted the artist, Francois Dubeau, and asked for permission to use his drawing for a scrolled vase which he granted on the condition that I didn't sell it. Anyway, I wasn't thrilled with how it initially came out and it sat around for a while and I came back and filled the fretwork with Filo and liked it much better. The surface wood in African Wenge and the inner layer is walnut and poplar. The vase design is based on a Steve Good design that I modified.2 points

Jules, welcome and great to have another one from Ontario, where in Ontario are you?. Just keep checking Kijiji every day. I've gotten some good deals for scroll saws on there. I have found 2 DW788 type1 for $150(or $125 sorry can't remember the exact price) and I found an EX21 for $300. I will keep an eye out for any good deals. Kurt2 points

Hello Jules, welcome to the Village, it's great to have you as a member. I think you made the right decision on not buying either of these saws, you cannot get replacement parts for both of them. You will find a good buy on a descent saw, just bide your time and keep an eye out for a deal. And just like you did this time, check in with us and we will let you know what we think of the saw. And sometimes you might even find someone on here, posting about a saw that they know of for sale. Something will eventually show up, you'll just have to be a bit more patient. Len2 points

Brad, I just finished reading what you last posted, nobody would ever think you were just looking for attention or pity. We all appreciate knowing how each other is doing, and if someone is in a pinch we do what we can to help the member out. For you to come on here to let us know of your issues and to ask for prayers, is something that we or at least I am glad to know and do for you. I only wish there was more I could do then pray for you, hopefully, the prayers we all will sending your way will be all that's needed. There's strength in numbers, and there's a fair number of us that will be praying for you both. Be well, and may God bless. Len2 points

Brad, I'm sorry to be reading about, how sick and under the weather you and now your bride is. It's tough enough when one person in the household is down, but when both are under the weather it's just to much. I'm happy that you have some assistance come in to help out, that has to help with worrying about each other. With the help you guys are getting, your medical issues will be well taken care of. Prayers will be sent your way, for both of you. And hang out here all you want, it's nice having you around and commenting on people's work. Just because you can't use your saw right now, doesn't mean you have to stop commenting. I value your opinion, and I appreciate you posting what you think. So please take care of yourself, but please post when you can also, it lets us know that you're still kicking. All my best to you and your wife, I hope you both start to fell better right away. Take the time to heal properly, don't rush things and do as the doc says. Take care!! Len2 points -
I wonder, would a hacksaw blade be any good to use as a cutter? Would one be longer then the shelf liner your using, you would need to know the width of the liner? I would use one of them as a cutter, if I could get one long enough. The blades already have a hole drilled in them, that could be used to attach them to the wood frame with. A new blade would last forever, I don't think you'd ever have to change it. Len2 points

Mr. Ray, sometimes its the ones you haven't met that bring a feller the most strength. I appreciate your kind words, brother, sincerely. I learned a long time ago when I was still truckin' that the folks I talked to on the phone, outside of braindead dispatchers & loud mouth brokers, were caring, God fearin' folks who just wanted the best for mankind. You remind me of one of those folks, Mr. Ray. Just a good ol' boy like me that wants the best for his friends. No, we've never met, but you're still my friend. That's the strongest point of this site is the friendship & brotherhood, as I've said before. I sincerely wish we could meet all of you face to face. Scrappile, your kind words sincerely mean alot, too. I don't want anybody to think, by any means, I've put this post on here to sound like I'm cryin' the blues. Because that's not it all. I'm just lettin' my friends know what has happened to us lately. My sincere apologies if anyone takes it that way. We sincerely appreciate all the prayers & support from everyone of you! I mean it from the heart! How we'll ever repay all of you, we have no clue, but we've never been shown such friendship & support! God bless!2 points -
Welcome to the forum. You have been given some good advise so far. The one thing I see in the photos is the table on the Delta is rusty. Rust is easily removed with steel wool and mineral spirits. But, if the table is rusty, what is the condition inside the saw? Something I would be worried about.2 points

Hi Jules, I have no knowledge of the EX-II but myself and CharleyL (another forum member) own Delta Q3's. Personally, I think it is a great saw but it is quite old now and not all parts are available. Mine has been very reliable though in all the years I have owned it. The only problems I have had is snapping the tension lever which is made of brass and the flexible air hose splitting. The Tension lever is available from Ereplacementparts.com for $4.74 USD. For the air hose, I simply use a piece of clear hose with some soft aluminium wire inserted into it so I can position it where I want. It is a "C" arm saw that pivots on a single point. That gives it an arcing cut which is quite aggressive which some people do not like. It may not be the easiest saw to learn on because of that aggressive cut but it is capable of fine work. Most of what you see in my gallery was cut on the Q3. I bought a second hand DeWalt DW788 as a back up saw but the motor died within three months. I now have a Hegner but the Q3 is still going strong. Rick Hutcheson has some info on the Q3 and a review at http://www.scrollsaws.com/ Let me know if you have any questions and good luck, Rob2 points

If you can look for a wood working/scrolling club in your area. If you find one go, ask questions, try saws. There are people from that area on this forum I believe, they may have helpful info for your area. Do not be in a rush. I personally would pass on those two unsupported saws. But that is me.2 points

Keep the faith and hoping for good reports. You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers.2 points -
Both of these saws were great in their day. I would never pay more than a few dollars for a saw that parts will become an issue. Not used to looking at Kijiji, but didn't see that much there that was a good deal. Also checked the Craigslist for Ontario, not much better. The Dewalts listed were stupid high (600 Canadian translates to 475 U.S), we can often find it new for close to that price here. With the options available to you on Kijiji, I would go for the cheapest delta (like $150 Canadian) and see if you can get the seller to come way down on that price, then save for the Excelsior which is one of your better options in Canada.2 points

Clock Selling??
Sam777 and one other reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Kevin I understand but those batteries last for over a year and by the time they have to reset or change a battery they forgot anyway. I have a few inserts that did not work from the get go. The flag ones are some of the worst. I can only find them through Wildwood and I use many of these. Can not find the blue flag ones any more. Only the white background. I ordered some of the 2-3/4" from Wildwood and the whole desig was changed and do not fit in my projects like the others use to. I buy 2" also. I use so many in my military clocks. I have asked here as well as other forums as to a source for some of the inserts I use but have come up empty. getting tougher to find my inserts.2 points -
You’ll get a lot of opinions on this. Parts for either saw will be hard to find as Excalibur doesn’t support those old saws anymore either. If it were me and I wasn’t sure if I’d like scroll sawing, I’d go with the Delta. But I might also wait a bit for a better more modern saw too. While the one saw is $280 and you mentioned $250 plus fuel and a road trip. I’m guessing you’d be able to pay more for another saw that could show up closer to home? If both saws are somewhat close to each other make arrangements to go look at both in the one trip and see what one looks / works best then make a decision2 points

Clock Selling??
CharleyL and one other reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Kevin just about all my projects are dipped in Watco Danish oil and let dry then I buff with Watco satin polish. This gives them a nice warm glow and feel as these that I have show were. I have been sticking those things on with scotch tape and never had a problem. Being on the bottom they do not get played with or touched much at all. As you see I also place felt dots to keep the clock bases from scratching furniture or anything and also helps keep that paper off the base to prevent from rubbing. As you said the instructions probably will get tossed but that is why I try to keep with the clock. If they are small clocks and people have a hard time getting them out they could take to a watch dealer and have them change the battery or ask a younger person to do them. The 2-3/4" inserts are also push in inserts. I do not like leaving a hole in the back if the project can accept the full depth of a clock insert. Sometimes you have no choice. Here is an example of that. The billiard ball clocks and also the golf ball for this golfer's clock. You do not want holes in the back of these.2 points -

Thank you, Len and Kurt. Wow, Kurt, those are great deals indeed! I will keep looking for sure. The used Dewalt saws on Kijiji right now are at least CAD$500. If you're spending that much money, might as well go for a NEW one over at Busy Bee Tools for CAD$599 - with stand and light. So far, that's the best deal I've seen on a new one, at least here in Canada.... in case anyone is interested. Also, I found two saws that Canadian members may be interested in: (1) a used RBI Hawk (Model 226M; 26-inch) in "excellent" condition selling for CAD$695. (2) a used EX-24 listed as "very good" condition. Also $695. They're in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Unfortunately, they're over my budget (for now). I'm sure I'm being dumb for not grabbing either one of these. Hope everyone is having a great day, Jules1 point

I never put tape or liner on plywood because of the potential on lift off of splinters. I learned the hard way. I attach directly to the wood with 3M Super 77 and remove with mineral spirits.1 point -

I did a little cutting for a couple of hour after a late breakfast. I used the shelf paper for the first time. Wonderful stuff. I like it much better than painters tape. The tack is strong enough to hold and removal is a snap. I bought Duck shelf paper from Wally World. I'm using a poor man's fuzzy removal remover that works fairly well. I don't scroll enough to justify the expensive flap type sanders. I run it at about 1400 rpm. Should have had this system in Florida to remove chad from election ballots. But that's another story...1 point
