this was a custom order and the client sent me the pattern so i am sorry i do not know to whom i should give credit. i love luan. if you take your time and use a reverse blade all 8 layers are usable and fits glued in a dollar tree frame. the frame here was about 30 years old i bought in an estate sale. delivered 2 of these in matching frames and the other 6 will go in $1 frames. i had to hot glue the figure to the bottom of the frame or it would move about.2 points -
I had a custom order request early this week and I thought I'd make the requested Brittany clock from a puzzle pattern.. Just finished cutting this... Still needs a mounting base and a sanding and finish applied.. Just can't decide if I like it or not.. Thinking I should have put the clock out front of the dog.. but was trying to keep it small so I put it there under the dog.. What you all think? I can always finish making a puzzle out of it and make another style clock Maybe the I needs more definition at the bottom? LOL anyway .. having fun playing around making ornamental fire wood ... This way I get to enjoy the saw time.. then later I get to enjoy the camp fire time with family laughing at my mistakes2 points

Some new cuttings
new2woodwrk and one other reacted to penquin for a topic
ere are a few cuttings I finished up and wanted to post. The Black Panther, Ironworker, and porgs are by Mahendra from the Scroll Saw Forums site. The UCLA and USC are a couple I glued up from some on line art I found. All were fun cuts and had a lot of fun doing them. The NA shield was a request also. Thanks for looking at em. jim2 points -

Finishing Oak Puzzles

Due to the open grain in oak I use a product called Deftoil. It is Deft's version of Danish Oil. I have tried the various plain oils. Bottom line you need a product that will dry / harden.2 points -
1" Belt Sander VS Oscillating Spindle Sander
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to Woodmaster1 for a topic
I have a 6x48 disc belt sander, the rigid sander, and a1" belt sander. I accumulated them over a period of years. I use the ridgid and 6x48 sanders all the time, the 1" sander I rarely use. I have stand alone spindle sander that I replaced with ridgid today. It will go to my son for him to use.2 points -
The rigid sander like shown above is what mine is... that I don't use much, LOL.. my go to sander is the 4 x 48 belt / disc sander..2 points
-
WOW! Had not seen one of those before.2 points

You might want to look into one of the units that is a combination belt sander and oscillating spindle sanders.2 points
-
I have and use both. I would not substitute one for the other. I do use the 1" belt sander more often, but I would not be without either. I also have a 4x48 stationary belt sander with a 9" disk sander and two random orbital sanders, various sanding blocks and mini sanding tools. I do have a handheld belt sander that never gets used.2 points
-
I used the spindle sander a lot when I did intarsia. I use it on wooden vehicles to remove saw marks. Other than that it takes up space. It sounds to me like you should replace your 1" sander with another one. Why not build a small bench to keep one on and the other stored underneath?2 points
-
Probably depends on the type of work you would be sanding.. I picked up a spindle sander a few years back.. It's great for sanding contours etc.. but you cannot sand any flat work on it like you could with the belt sander.. I have the belt sander as well.. I rarely use the spindle sander.. but I also don't do much sanding other than to sand flat surfaces.. Maybe if I was doing intarsia type work then the spindle sander would do most of the work.. both sanders are nice to have.. you just have to weigh out your decision based on the type of sanding you do most..2 points

We have a couple of importers locally. I go gather their old busted up pallets. Scored some great European oak that way. Russ2 points -

It is nice as is. The next dog/clock puzzle could have the dog with the BALL(clock) in front of the dog, just an idea.2 points -

My 1" belt sander is on its last legs. It doesn't owe me any money. It has been one of my "go to" sanders for a lot of my work for many years. But .... Have always wanted an oscillating spindle sander. Have never actually used one - but think it can do the same work and more. So. Am thinking of replacing the 1" belt sander with the oscillating spindle sander - I do not have room in my shop for both. Is this a reasonable swap? The one thing (I think) the spindle sander will NOT do is sharpen metal blades - lawn mower blades, kitchen knives, carving knives, chisels - all of which I do and do well with the 1" belt machine. Far as I know this is the only real downside. What I like about the spindle sander is that it will sand tight curves where the belt leaves me looking for other equipment (dremel, drill press) - despite what I said about metal sharpening I do a lot more wood sanding than metal. Advice??? Thanks, Jay1 point

Pattern makers / cutters
Lucky2 reacted to savethebeer for a topic
Pattern makers of the Village I salute you. Portrait cutters of the village I stand in awe of your skill. Below is what Mahendra produced for me and then is my first cutting. I looked closely at the detailing of the pattern and the size of things like the eyes so i decided to use some unknown type of ply to do a practice cut. (the fact that it is minus 3 and snowing and having to set up my table saw outside on the patio to cut down 4ft by 4 ft BB into useable sizes has nothing to do with not having BB to play with) I have done faces before but not real people so it did not matter if there was some small element of cross eyes or mouth too far on one side or the other. Portraits have to be spot on. especially when you like the person. I was reasonably happy with my cutting here especially around the eyes, I got caught out 2 or 3 times where delicate cuts were only done after surrounding supporting wood was cut away. I knew that I would get lots of grain lifting when I remover the tape, but I also noticed how changing the angle of viewing gives you different result. This wood is 5mm and my BB will be 6mm. I've posted two photos of the same wood showing different angle but I dont know if the site will let me upload them due to size. If it does accept the 2 of them, see how some faces show better at one angle than another. [This is probably true of all cuttings but I've never noticed till now.]1 point -

Just got back a short time ago from the craft show, wasn't a disaster did better then I thought, $200, not many others sold anything, I sold mostly eagles things, if it wasn't for that , I wouldn't have done well. Quite a few vendors didn't make it, had an empty spots on either side of me. The storm that we had knocked out power in the surrounding areas, We were lucky, although I had trees down in my back yard, and they were on the township property, saves me money. Now I can rest for a while. edward1 point

I got the kit from a Canadian company called Stockroom Supply - http://stockroomsupply.ca/shop/drum-sanders/24-x-4-v-drum-the-works-kit.html I got it at a wood working show about 7 years ago and I know it wasn't as expensive as the website shows. I don't know where you are located, but you can check to see if any shows are coming to your area here - http://www.thewoodworkingshows.com/ I made the top plate for it out of some laminated 1/2" MDF and layered that with Formica. You have to get your own motor. They include a DVD with videos and instructions on how to build the box and mount the hardware. I think, if you search around their website, the videos are there, too.1 point

Great cutting and another great idea. I'll have to try that. I guess it depends on how much glue you put on the wax paper.1 point

That Ridgid Belt/Oscillating Spindle Sander looks really interesting - pretty neat - I'd never seen anything like that before - started reading reviews and will take a look at You Tube videos today while I'm in the shop.1 point

Thanks everyone - looks like - so far anyway - there is some pretty clear writing on the wall ...... Dan: I wish I did have the option to have both - but I've pretty much crowded my shop out of any choices that could add even one other small piece of machinery ..... Jay1 point

No Kevin is not the same thing. Depending on the brand and formula, Danish oils contain oils and varnishes. It is also very expensive. You can buy a quart of boiled linseed oil and a quart of mineral spirits for about the same price of Danish oil, and you get two quarts of mix.1 point

I think it looks really nice. It might look better out front but tough to say without seeing it. Another thing is maybe make the reveal of wood around the clock much smaller. Just a thought.1 point

I honk it looks ok as is. Especially if you put a nice looking base on it. Since you think you want to do one with the clock like a ball, why not go ahead and make that one. Show both to the client, and let them decide. Take pictures of both and put on your site then when people order, they can “see” both and make their choice.1 point
-
Kevin, do you have some scraps of the oak you could try the mineral oil on so you could see for yourself if you will be happy with it. I am pretty sure I did a couple of puzzles out of oak and used it and it seemed fine and showed the grain.(Not at Home to look and see for sure.) try both and see which you prefer.1 point
