    Bobscroll Trivet

8 inch trivet cut from a NZ native rimu drawer front, just under one inch thick. Pattern is by our very own Bobscroll and is in the pattern library. Each leaf should have five vein lines but I got lazy and decided not to do those. I think it still looks ok without them. Finish is 50/50 BLO and mineral spirits. Thanks for looking. Rob

  5. I'm not going to get into an argument with anyone about this subject but, I want to say that I think Jes brings up a very good point. I also think JT made a valid point about , and I quote here for accuracy, "it is a set of typed words. There is no pause for effect, no highlighting of a specific word, or no way to show word deflection because you can not hear that person's response, only read it. " I think the bottom line is to contemplate HOW we say things before we post and TREAT ONE ANOTHER WITH RESPECT. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Returning

Hi from St. Louis! I began scrolling in late 2009. A few years back I burned out. As my skills increased, so did the difficulty of my projects - and the time it took to complete them. But birthdays and Christmas kept coming at the same speed and time at the saw became more like work than fun because there was always a deadline. So I stopped. Halfway through a project I just up and stopped. I still have the pieces though, lol. I've done a couple of small things here and there, but very little. This spring I really want to get started again. My saw is in the garage so warmer is better - at least until warm turns into hot. I imagine it will take a while to knock the rust off. My rust. There's no rust on the saw. I make sure to keep it waxed, even if I am not using it. I saw my first robin of spring last week, so I am ready when the weather breaks for the better. I like fretwork the most. Well, I did then. I don't know what will grab me this time but I have downloaded a nice wolf pattern from the library. I might take a whack at that. It'd be really hard to tell where I go outside the lines anyway and I am sure I will be doing that for a while until I get the knack back. Thanks for having me back.

Very good and if it was mine I'd make a masonite square larger top to fit over it to give you more table space and even a zero clearance blade hole or with a material of you choice. Roly

HI Take the hold down off, all it does is make it hard to make turns and tight cuts. Nobody uses a hold down, I have been sawing for 30 years and never use one.Learn to grip your wood with finger tips and use one for a holder and one with a lighter touch for pivoting. have fun and good luck Bill

  11. I am very impressed. I did this one and it took me 14 hours of actual cutting time. You don't work fast with Jatoba because it is so hard but your letters are even smaller than mine. This is similar in size. Keep up the good work! I am sure your Dad loved it.

  12. Someone from a dog show / club contacted me about making a Brittany clock.. She referenced the clock to my pheasant hunting clock.. so I asked about if she wanted the hunting clock with a Brittany in place of the pointer dog.. she said no just a Brittany.. So I made the clock from Harvey's / Iggy's puzzle pattern ( posted on here a couple weeks ago.. I sent her photos and she said that's not what she wanted.. she wanted the hunting clock with a Brittany, LOL.. Lady make up your mind, LOL.. she wanted me to call her to talk about the clock.. so I call and she didn't have anything to say that she hadn't already said..other than she is in charge of the prizes for this organization and has a healthy budget to get Brittany items for the prizes and a raffle.. asked if I had any other ideas for items... Dang.. I tried my hardest to send her to Iggy's web site... as I could tell already she is going to be one of those dreaded customers that has you make all sorts of things then doesn't want anything in the end, LOL Anyway here is another Brittany themed clock for her... if she frowns on this one I'll send her to anyone here that might like to deal with her because I'm done after this one.. BTW I cut this on my old Hawk 220VS and used several different blades to experiment with some different blades.. and I did get some slight burnt ends on some of the pointed spots.. won't use the Olsen Mach Speed for cutting Cherry.. they was cutting good.. and didn't have the saw speed up much.. even turned it down to around less than half speed.. FD-UR did the same for me too.. but the Pegas.. no burnt edges even on high speed.. Gotta love those pegas MG series blades..

....this is my idea of fun. First, after an hour playing w/this beauty, there is no comparison w/the Wen. ....'nough said. No instruction for installing the lock knob. I guess Delta figures if you can figure out how to put the lock knob on the table tilt.....you can use the saw correctly. Not real sure about how to adjust the hold down. Either too tight or not enough. Now I need a cabinet/stand for it. Sit or stand.....?????

  22. I started out with a 16" Craftsman because of price and uncertainty of the hobby. Well, it wasn't long and I was hooked. A year later I upgraded to a Craftsman 20" because I was doing bigger projects. Then one day I was in a specialty tool store that carried Excalibur. There on display was a 30" Excalibur and to top it off they had reduced the price. After doing my research and reading endless reviews on this saw and company I took the plunge. That was almost 20 years ago and I haven't regretted ever since. This saw is amazing. It for sure will outlast me. I would go with the saw within your budget because all three brands are good and if operated and maintained properly will give you the same end result. Like buying a car. They will all get you from A to B. Good luck with your decision.

  27. First off, welcome to the SSV. Nothing but fine folks here. As to your question, how big of a hurry are you in? That's a big budget you have there and just about any of the top end saws will fit. You must first decide how much saw you are going to need. I for one started with a used Dewalt that I bought off of Craigslist for $250. I'm still learning to use it. But a deal came along on a used Hegner with all the current upgrades on it. I bought it for $300. That's a $1500 saw, So, the world is open to what ever you want to buy. Most of the people here who have jumped to the more expensive saws are using the Excalibur 21 inch. They were discontinued for a while but have recently come back on the market. There is a ton of info here on the SSV about them. Anyway, until you figure out how serious you are going to be with the hobby, I'd go for a good used Dewalt. And there are many out there. Try to find a Type 1 if possible but if you find a nice Type 2 that runs well, jump on it. You can always sell it later on and buy UP. Ray

  28. John, you are so right. I have tried so many times in so many ways to find my answers before asking the questions. I have spent many hours watching youtube videos regarding dust control but I could never find just what I was looking for. I came away with a ton of info to put in my memory bank. Then I came here and asked my question regarding dust control/Dewalt saw. That's when I got the answers I was looking for. In the end, I designed and built my own system but I incorporated what I had learned both here and on youtube. I guess what I'm trying to say is, even though there is no such thing as a "stupid question", do try to find some of the stuff on your own. You will be glad you did. I DO enjoy reading the questions and answers on different things here. I have even ventured out to the other forums here on SSV and found great enjoyment from most of them. This is a great place to hang out. Ray

Pretty cool, huh? Pretty high tech. A scrap of walnut, a magnet from Lowes, a foot of #6 ground wire, cheepie LED light from HF and some tape. I made it for changing the lower guides on my band saw. Seems it will have a dual life now.

  31. Here's one for you. It'd be the perfect day to choc coat a raw egg, or boiled, and wrap it as the real deal. You don't get this chance very often. You know you want to do it now that you've read this. It's stuck in your mind and you can see the funny side to it. Go on, be daring, do it.

That way I could get back behind the Scrollsaw and try too more of the other projects knocked out . Any comments are welcomed .....8

  33. New2woodwork good luck with your new saw. I hope it gives you tons of fun and of course we want to see pictures of what you create with it. As the others have said they all need maintenance at some point if you want then to survive. I still have my Old Delta SS350, that truly was a great entry level saw. I switched to a new Hawk G4-26 in 2005 that has treated me very well! I always find the discussion about having to get permission to buy a tool very humorous, does the wife ask permission to buy shoes, or pocket book (sorry that is a bit sexist) as long as the bills are paid and we are not spending the grocery money it should never be an issue. JMO. I will admit that my wife does spoil me with some amazing toys for my birthday and Christmas. We do talk about all large ticket item that go into the house but unless it is a really big purchase like a new Jeep or it impacts both of us like a big screen TV we both do what we want. I am truly blessed.

    Scam pop ups?

I'm not sure but I don't think this would be a pop up they get money for. This is something from amazon telling me I won or could win. Then it's impossible to close I have to exit back to my home screen. I could be wrong but just seems more like scam or virus.

  36. Thanks to all. I think what is wrong is when I do exactly as you all have suggested, I see the file on my screen. I hit the save button and then I try to access the file that I have just uploaded and it takes me right to my desktop screen where I have the file. It then gives me a "save" option. I have already saved it a couple of times so that is not working. I'm going to try it one more time and see if you folks can access it. Maybe I can't access a file on my computer that I upload. Anyway, here it is again. Let me know if you can access it. Ray kennethstand.pdf

That is a very stout looking stand. I like your vacuum system. So, you are vacuuming the dust off the top of the table as opposed to blowing it off. What are the blue flex tubes? Where did you get those? I like the idea of sucking it all up before it gets blow all over.

My shop is 9 x 13 and I have a lot of equipment in it. Two scroll saws. But with that said, the stand that I built for my Dewalt sits pretty much back in a corner but it will move. I have been trying to come up with some sort of "lift" mechanism so that it can be rolled but so far, I haven't found one I like. I don't want to lose the "firmness" that it now has. I did buy some of the H/F foam mat and put that under it so it doesn't move at this time and is very vibration free. Anyway, there are many ways to do it and the stand I built could have wheels incorporated into it. It depends on how creative you are. I don't recall where I found the plans. I made the top so that it can tilt to give me different working angles. Oh, and I also made a dust control system for for it that incorporates a Fein vacuum. I'll stick a pic here. Also the plans. I found them so I'm including them. Dang it. I'm having trouble posting the plans. I'll figure it out and post them. Ray

    Metric???

Starting the learning curve from scratch, I can definitely see the advantage of the metric system. I still have no interest in personally using it. It doesn't slow me down at all, because I'm strictly a hobbiest and speed is at the bottom of the list of my priorities. I'm pretty sure I could make just as many errors with the metric system as the Imperial. It's a gift.

    Jewelry Patterns

I found them!!! Most of these I made as pendants, but you can make them a bit smaller for earrings. It is a bit surprising how light weight wooden jewelry can be. The line on the top is the middle. Drill a hole to attach a jump ring or bail. The pdf called Necklaces, is an article I wrote a few years ago about jewelry making pieces and how they work. Also, never underestimate a simple shape with pretty wood. Some of my favorites are not the most intricate. I would be happy to help if you have any questions.
