Some of my first scroll saw projects
frankorona and 4 others reacted to Adam_Leslie for a topic
A few of the things that I have made in the last 2 months as a new scroller. The W was done by my 7 year old son with a just a little help from me to hold the piece down and make tight turns. Got the idea for the spiral from a couple of other designs I had have seen on here and other scroll saw sites. And being from Las Vegas have to support my Las Vegas Golden Knights.5 points -
New Feature - Achievement Awards!
barb.j.enders and 3 others reacted to Travis for a topic
Howdy All. I just added a new feature which I think will be fun. We're adding achievement awards. These are fun little awards for certain things. Such as medals for participating in challenges or contests, contributing to the Ornaments For Charity ebook, participating in projects or events. There are also trophies that are unlocked by reaching certain milestones, like uploading a profile pic, getting a certain amount of posts, uploading to your gallery, getting or giving a certain amount of post reactions, etc. They don't do much other than being a fun way to recognize folks who participate in SSV. The medal and trophies will show up on your profile page. There will also be a nice little icon below your name on forum posts showing the last 5 or so awards (you can see an example under my name). You'll be able to hide specific awards from your profile page if you want to. But I think it's fun to see. You'll start to see notifications pop up in your feed. Right now, I'm awarding them to participants on the monthly Scroll Saw Challenge going back to last October. After that, I'll slowly add new awards.4 points -

good evening ssv! hope all is well! i have to say today has been one of the more emotional days i've had in some time. i had a check up with my cardiologist today, & frustration has built since the last check up. after a verbal altercation with him, & explaining to him he twisted the wrong bulls' tail, i wasn't there to sit. i wanted answers. he told me he weren't goin' to be treated like that, & i said good! me either! start actin' like a sawbones. he come around & we finally got some of the answers we been after for sometime! he released me to go back to the shop!:):) he did tell us some information about the medications i'm takin'. answered several other questions. even told me i could drive.;) then i get on here, & my likes say i won two trophies! one for lending a hand, & the other for an ice breaker! what do those mean? not to sound dumb, just would like to know what i did to "win" trophies? it made things a little better to end the day.:)3 points -

Two things: 1. Congrats on being able to drive. Gotta be a great felling. My wife said I have never been able to drive! 2. Got my "Awards" yesterday. Just assumed that an award & $2 will get you a cup of coffee. Seriously, the more postings by others has to be a good thing. jerry3 points -
T- Storms today - shop shut done - you?
new2woodwrk and 2 others reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
No that is the short answer. Now that is if it is a direct hit and then the only way to protect electronics is to have them unplugged. Surge protectors such as whole house protectors and those ones that you plug small appliances in are protection from within the house. Every motor in your house such as tools, refrigerator, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and such change the voltage on the wires within your house everytime they start. Without getting into the tech side of things power reduction and then power surge when up to speed increases amps and if a piece of electronic equipment is sensitive it can over time wear it out. Todays modern appliances take these things into consideration and are (hopefully) protected to a certain degree from their own start ups and shut downs but do not take in the whole house. You see this happen when something kicks on and the lights dim for a bit. Even if you have switches in off position or starters not energized, if you get a direct hit to your power system the amperage generated can jump an air gap very easily. If a transformer down the street gets hit, it will send that power through the lines and down stream. people put lightning arrestors on their houses and use a ground grid to help dissipate a strike but it is not 100% guaranteed to stop all damage. Are you better with surge protector than without, the answer is yes but I explained why. Now we are even more vulnerable in the summer months because power companies cut back on power delivery or else you get brownouts and could lead to blackouts because so many houses and businesses have air conditioners and so much electrical equipment today.3 points -

Ok, so I think I have the fix so I’m posting this in case someone else has this issue. Again, this is for iPad users. Go to settings, the general , then iPad storage, then click safari. There you will see the websites that do not clear when you hit the “clear history” under the safari section. From here, click on websites, scroll down and “clear all sites”. No issues since I did this.2 points

I'm starting to populate the trophies section. So you'll start seeing some notifications of achievements that you have earned a long time ago. Things like "Ice Breaker"...earned when you make your first post. Bear with me as I get through this backlog.2 points

Dick, since you are now in AZ - rather than trying to use it to unglue something - it would be better to save it and use it for when you get that inevitable sunburn. At least that is what I had used on me as a child. Hated it, always thought you smelled like a pickle after!2 points -

I vote to just toss it and start over. I once attempted the heat trick. Sure it worked but took a lot of time. The real issue was once I got the pieces apart I found the heating caused the pieces to warp. Good luck with what ever you decide. Let us know.1 point -

I started out years ago on the SSWC board.. never did really love the site but for a long while that was the only one I found and knew .. I'm there under a different name but I don't think I've posted on there in several years.. and rarely even look.. Also on Steve Goods forum... but again.. don't check in much.. and last time I tried I couldn't get logged on for some reason. and still can't get on it. The Facebook groups are fairly active.. but I don't partake in them very much..1 point -

I went through the same thing many years ago. Was told I had a bad cold. Three days later I was having sever problems breathing, got rushed and admitted to the hospital for pneumonia and asked why I didn't seek treatment before. Wife explained I seen a Dr 3 days prior and was told a bad cold. I had a 10 day stay to get better. Needless to say never seen him again. Praying your Mrs. recovers quickly and fully.1 point -

Glad to hear that you and the Cardiologist came around and worked it out together and you got some positive information and good news. Nothing going to make you feel better then getting into your shop and being allowed to drive. Glad the trophies just added icing to your cake for the day. Now, looking forward to seeing what you do in your shop.1 point -

Thanks for the information! I saw yesterday that I had two trophies! Didn’t know what it was about but is a nice thing Travis is doing. As a side bar this site has sure taken off as much as the other one has went downhill. They show 39,000 members but only 133 active. I feel we need both to promote the scroll saw hobby. Thanks Travis for all the work you put into this site!1 point -

Don't remember where I found the pattern...prob from a Google search! The blue backing is cut from an antique wooden wheel barrel. The wheel barrel was in pretty bad shape but I took it apart and use the slats for different projects. Not sure what to use the metal wheel for!1 point -

Just guessing but... I think a lot of them are coming up for sale because... One.. they are mostly the old ones coming up.. and.. most of the old ones are owned or was owned by older folks.. most all of them I see in my area say in the add.. Dads old saw or grandpa's old saw.. typically saying the they are no longer able to use it or they have passed and they are cleaning out his old shop.. How both my Hawks came up for sale... Hawk sold a lot of those back in the day.. On a side Note.. I also see tons of Hegners up for sale too... just the ones I see are the old ones that are either single speed and or doesn't have the quick release at the front of the saw..1 point

The best advice I received when I first started scrolling were two simple things: Relax, drop your shoulders down. I did realize until I read that that I was so tense when scrolling I had my shoulders up around my ears! Breath normal, which also means relax.. I realized I was holding my breath do to being tense. Paid attention to these to things and I really started enjoying scrolling.1 point

i am sorry. i had posted pics before but should have included one here. this is the one peeling up. the tiny piece between hulks hand and the gun. here is the back i scroll portraits mostly. i am also using, posters (Beatles) , photos of friends , comic book covers (hulk) and album covers and i use them as a pattern. each part of the pic is cut out in a way that lets me glue the parts back together in the layers this was in real life. counting the background this one is cut into 9 pieces and in 8 layers. before glued back together in 7 layers that help?1 point

Varnish or not to Varnish??
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
I do not know what you do so I can not add anything useful. I wish you would include what you are trying to do. Your sign-on name means nothing to me so the 3D stuff is not ringing any bells. Would like to help. In pen turning we put decals and photos on pen tubes all the time and cast and maybe this can carry over into what you are trying. Maybe a photo or two can help too. If not then I assume the help you have gotten does work for you. Good luck.1 point -
Yes, I'm glad you mentioned that. I bought a wallpaper seam roller to smooth things out and get the glue to spread evenly.1 point

This does not answer your question but I have not heard about varnish for many years. But, as a kid I remember my mother varnishing things. I think that's the last time I heard about varnish.1 point
