Tom started buying patterns from me a couple of months ago and had a lot of custom ones made for his local area. Funny... he called me to tell me this, then he posted it on a Facebook page we both take part in. LOL ==== Tom wrote: My wife has been less than enthusiastic about me spending so much time in my shop on the scrollsaw working on these puzzles. She agreed to help me with one show, so this past weekend she worked this booth with me at an arts festival in our hometown of Ocean Springs, MS. She started out just doing the credit card sales portion for me, but as time passed and we were selling more and more, she got involved in the total process. By the end of the weekend, she couldn't stop talking about it and last night she informed me that we made $1540! Fast forward to this morning. I woke up at 5:30 and rolled over to find her not only awake, but looking at her phone. Before I could say a word, she said, "Well, it's about time you woke up, sleepyhead. You need to get out there and start cutting some wood!"5 points

I'm so tired of this "cold" weather (my version of cold is much different than most of the rest of you. LOL) but I'm ready for warmth... then I can bitch about how hot it is in the shop. Last day of cool weather for us today. At least I haven't been out there building a new fence and a shed like the guy I hired... he looks cold out there as I peer out my window. ;-)3 points

Just had to add this post to the topic. I have been using this New set up for controlling the excess dust and let me tell you all something. NO DUST GETS AWAY FROM MY Dust Sucker Tubes. Using a Vac named BAD ASH.... It is about Half the Loudness of my normal Shop Vac. Very tolerable to me. Still able to enjoy my Background Music. I don't know how I have been Scrolling for over a Decade without knowing about this set up. Been using the Square box fan with Filter along with the lil fan blowing across the table for Many, many Years. This set up does work Good, but not all the Dust is contained on that filter. Anyway this just be my 13 cents worth of thoughts. Danny :+}2 points

Donation piece
Lucky2 and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
One of my new neighbors asked if I would like to donate a piece of my woodworking to her Church fund raiser and of course I said that I would be delighted to do so. This is the first on several that I am donating. I am keeping it simple so that I will be able to give her several pieces. She was looking for a cross to start with so this is the one I decided on Dick heppnerguy2 points -

Leaving a bandsaw blade in tension shortens the life and is so easy to do. I had a piece of wormy oak laying around so I used it to help me remember. (I am sure I am the ONLY ONE in the Scrollsaw Village that needs that kind of help!!) The sign sits on the bandsaw table when the saw is untensioned and hangs from the shop door when the saw is tensioned so I have to duck my head to miss it. IMG_0868.JPG 1.9 mb · Done2 points

You guys are killing... and I love your humor.2 points -
It is more than the steel. The following is from the Timbersaw bandsaw blade website: "When you are done cutting for the day, take the tension off your blade. Band saw blades, when warmed up from cutting, always stretch; and upon cooling shrink by tens of thousandths of an inch each cooling period. Therefore, blades, when left on the saw over tension themselves and leave the memory of the two wheels in the steel of the band, which will cause cracking in the gullet. When you leave the band on your saw under tension, not only do you distort the crown and flatten out the tires (which makes them very hard), but you also place undue stress on your bearings and shafts. Believe it or not; you can, and will damage your wheel geometry sooner or later and considerably shorten bearing life. You are also crushing your tires or V-belts."2 points

This is from a pattern used for Schensenity, which is a German folk art. The black parts are cut out with special scissors and laid on a black background. Then the image is painted using folk art techniques. I'm going to place it on a black background and my wife will do the painting. Then I think I'll frame it. The technique is similar to scroll sawing, so I figured I would try it. My cutting is on the left and the pattern on the right. Lew1 point

I have cut this pattern just a few times in the past, but I wanted to post here because this is probably the best I've ever cut it. This is one of those patterns that gives me opportunity to improve myself with every cutting. I don't cut it often because it doesn't sell well . . . . because I have it priced way too high . . . because it is a pain in the backside to cut. (Cross Posted to SSWC) In case some of you wonder how I can cut that small, especially since my eyesight is not the best . . . I am of the belief that most of the veteran cutters on this forum are better cutters than I am, but I cheat by using 4+ reading glasses plus a magnifiying lamp along with plenty of light. Here is what it actually looks like under heavy magnification. The trick is not cutting small because in metal that is easy. The trick is clearly seeing the pattern. Of course seeing it clearly, sometimes means printing it on quality paper, not cheap copy paper. (CA glue seeps through some paper, making it fuzzy/muddled)1 point

ALEX FOX Tri-Plane
Lucky2 reacted to spirithorse for a topic
I just finished the Alex Fox Tri-Plane for which he generously offered a free pattern and a video of assembly. My finished product definitely would NOT have stayed together with-out glue like Alex's did but, over-all, I am very pleased with the end result. 1/8th inch Baltic Birch and I don't have a customer for this; I just wanted to see how accurate my cutting could be. Thank you very much, Alex! God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -
Does anyone rent space for their shop?
OCtoolguy reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
My shop is in my basement. The local storage places frown upon you working on anything in them. Where I have my unit I rent there isa guy always there doing something and they don't seem to bother him, not sure what he is doing though.1 point -
Kevin, they look Fantastic.I have a lot of catching up to do.1 point

Years ago I tried renting a storage unit to have shelter for storage and working on a old classic car I was restoring.. Needless to say they declined me once they knew I wanted to work in the unit.. for insurance purposes etc they said they couldn't allow me to work in the unit.. as it's a storage unit not a shop.. plus they also said if I was working and something caught fire it'd not only burn up my car and the storage unit.. but it was putting every one else that had neighboring units at risk for damage.. This was 30 - 35 years ago... most of these places I would think would be much more strict on working in one now than they was way back then.1 point

I don't think I would scroll as much if my saw wasn't at home. I like the convenience of having my kitchen so if I want a drink or a snack I can. I personally don't think that flee markets are good places to sell, the people who go are looking for a bargain not handcrafted at. Just my 2 cents1 point

What kind of exposure could you expect in a rental unit? I guess I have just not heard of such a thing here. All the storage units around here have a locked gate with an office out front to give you access. I guess I know nutthin' bout Florida1 point

Welcome to the forum from another Navy Veteran. I think the projects you were inquiring about are most generally just called Layered. Post some pics when you get a chance. God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -
If the storage unit is like the ones I've rented there is no adequate lighting, windows, electrical outlets, etc. I would not dream of scrolling under those conditions. I scroll because it is entertaining and stress relieving. But that's just me.1 point

My shop is in the basement....not too bad a spot, Plenty of room and decent temp all year. I also have a tin shop on the opposite side of the wood working area. Not sure about using a storage unit as a retail shop....may be zoning or storage rules against that..... If you want to sell some of your work, local craft shows and markets may be the way to go.....not too much of a monetary investment. We have our home on the market and a place to work is def a consideration looking for a new place! lew1 point

I think your custom beach puzzles will sell better as non-puzzles because customers will buy them as a display item instead of a toy to be took apart. Duke1 point

1-1/2" wood will tax any saw. The reason the skip tooth blade cut better is it does not have reverse teeth. Pegas MG blades ar a reverse tooth blade. The reverse teeth don't allow the sawdust to clear the kerf as well hence, the slow cutting. I use Flying Dutchman Polar blades in 3, 5 and 7 for compound cutting. They have a slight set to the teeth. This make a slightly wider kerf to help displace the sawdust. Even with the right blade, it will still be slow cutting, but can be done. I routinely use hardwoods for compound cutting such as Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Mahogany and more. I've even cut Yelloheart and Purpleheart with the Polar blade.1 point
