    Just projects

Completed my first "official" scroll project. I love the sun/moon images. I have them all over. Now, I have one that I created. I put a couple of coats of deft on it. Decided that there was no better place to put it than on my new cabinet from where it came. The first of many to come. First lesson learned.....relax.

Been a while since I've posted anything. Kind of burned myself out scrolling and took a break for a while. Anyway back in the shop and just finished this Charles Hand pattern. Was good getting back to the saw. Mike

  4. I'm experimenting with some new projects to make for this coming Christmas Season. One of these is the mailbox attached. The pattern is a slightly modified version of one by Dianne Thompson. I made a few small changes, but it's mostly the same as her's.. It is about 3 1/4" tall and was all cut from one piece of wood, but the flag and shaft were cut out separately from the same piece of wood and then attached with a small spot of glue. No other glue joints exist in it. The original pattern has the flag sticking out of the top center of the mailbox, which allows it to be cut as all as one piece., but it just didn't look right to me there This mailbox was cut from poplar, but I have made a few others from pine. The red flag and the leaf color was done with marking pens. I'll be trying to find a better way on future mailboxes. I used a Flying Dutchman #1R blade for this. I'm also trying different cut sequences and blades, hoping to be able to cut it faster and easier in the future. It took about 50 minutes to cut this one. Line following accuracy is absolutely necessary for this to look good. Making these is quite challenging. Charley

  5. Day 1 of a 2 day event was today. I had to shake the rust off and remember how to do this! :-) Sold 40 today with a decent sized crowd ($885). Tomorrow should be better since today wasn't a holiday for many folks. Goal for tomorrow is to sell 60. Dogs were the number 1 selling item as usual selling 14 of them. I sold several items I only had 1 of on hand, so I'll have some cutting to do next week to restock. Next Saturday I heard about an event called WoofStock... a dog festival. Dog parade and everything. LOL I'll give it a try and see if enough dog crazy folks show up.

  8. You may remember that I posted a cross about a week ago that was for a donation. Well today I put together all three of the pieces that I made for the religious school fund raiser. Here they are. I know they will not bring a lot but every dollar counts. I just did not have much shop time lately. Dick heppnerguy

    Compound Cuts

These are just a few of my compound cuts. I like cutting compound cuts, because once you remove the wood from sides it's like opening a box of Cracker Jacks and seeing the surprise inside. I use 1.5" x 1.5" x 5" Bass wood (the wood wood carvers use). I found the best price for buying Basswood is on Ebay.

    Blade Storage

I finally got around to using the tubes I purchased a couple of months ago. Replaced the PVC tubes I had been using. I guess the thing I like the most is the fact I can remove a tube and keep it next to the saw. I frequently stop at some point on a project and when I returned to it I could not remember what blade I was using. I don't remember much period.

I to keep my blades in tubes in a stand. I keep the tube of the blade I am currently using out of the stand so I know which blade I am using.

Trust me jes, you're not alone. my Father used to tell me forgettin' things comes with age. As Doc Holliday once said "not me, I'm in my prime"! Well, the prime is gone, I'm afraid, but the clock hasn't struck midnight. yet. My memory ain't what it used to be, I admit it. The biggest mistake I make is thinkin' I'll remember that, I don't need it to write it down. Yea right! I don't keep any blades around the saw except the ones I'm usin'. Confusion sets in, & then a huntin' party to look for blades if I keep to many.

I have that same issue. So I keep all my blades away from the scroll saw and only have a package of the blades I'm using next to the saw.

    Packing Tape

If you want to see it work, stack two pieces of 1/8" plexiglass and make some cuts with and without packing tape. I was sold at that point.

  21. My 6 year old grandson has been spending his Spring Break with us. We have been working on this ALex Fox pattern of the Humvee. I stacked cut two, this one I will keep, the second one will go home with him for him and his dad to put together. We had a great time with it. It took me two days to cut all the parts out. Putting it together was easy, just following Alex's video. Thanks Alex for the nice free pattern.

    Blade Storage

I use those same tubes to store my blades, and keep them all in a plastic box. Then I made a small holder for one tube which I attached to the scroll saw stand, so I could keep the tube I am currently using close to hand. The box is stored under the scroll saw stand.

    Dentist

Just finished cutting this for my Dentist. It's made from 4mm Baltic Birch Ply and finished with 2 coats of sanding sealer and one coat of lacquer. This is the second one of these I have cut, the first was a few years ago and was for my Dad's Dentist. Many thanks to Grampa for the great pattern.

  44. I use 2" sellotape all the time and certainly notice the difference if I don't use it and it helps keep the pattern down in the places you need to hold down as you cut. I'm just saying. Roly

  50. I am very impressed. I did this one and it took me 14 hours of actual cutting time. You don't work fast with Jatoba because it is so hard but your letters are even smaller than mine. This is similar in size. Keep up the good work! I am sure your Dad loved it.
