I'm recouping well from my neck surgery but will still be out of the shop for a while. I made this some time back. I worked on a farm for several years during high school and college. I recently saw this cool picture of the wife of the farmer that I worked for on her facebook page and surprised her with this. The layout of the picture made for a fun wooden 3D representation of it. Hope to be back in the shop in a few weeks.7 points

So, I took a normal Celtic Heart cut, then using the Arbor Press/Dapping Kit from Harbor Freight to dome it. Turned out pretty neat I think. ------Randy6 points

BD gift for Dad
Lucky2 and 2 others reacted to GPscroller for a topic
Showed Dad a pic of this pattern and he rattled off what year the truck was and how the scene reminded him of growing up. It is his birthday on the 20th of this month, so decided to cut it for him. Alex Fox pattern, stack cut three 1/8th BB ply, 11 X 14 using mainly #3 Sawbird ultra reverse blades. Jeff3 points -

The very first thing I do with those cans is cut that plastic ring off. When a can of Danish oil gets gummed up I usually have other cans of mineral spirits or acetone that I empty and just save the caps. Those cans at HD do come with lids and can get in quart or gallon. I will usually put left over room paints in them and label. When I pour danish oil back in can I use a funnel designated for this. I am constantly pouring in and out of those cans. I love my Watco Danish oil. When Home Depot stopped carrying it and Watco stopped making it I was a maniac going from Homer to Homer buying up all I could and I still have some left which I am guessing maybe 25 years ago. The new stuff when they got so many people screaming for it and brought it back on line they changed the formula to meet certain guide lines and it is not quite the same but still good stuff.3 points -
I use a wine bottle with a screw cap & just give the top a wipe before rescrewing the cap back on.The best part is emptying the original contents.3 points

Workshop Challenge - Scroll Saw Challenge
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to Travis for a topic
Howdy All. The calendar tells me it's spring, but the weather doesn't seem to agree. Regardless, it's time to get into the shop! I know I love seeing shop pics. I don't know what it is about them. I just love seeing how other people work. So, this month's challenge is to share pictures of your shop...mess and all. Share a pic of your workshop. Multiple pics are encouraged. Or, if you're so inclined, h'bout a shop tour video!? It doesn't have to be fancy. When you post, tell us a little something about it. What you like or don't like about the shop? What improvements would you like to make? What kind of work do you typically do? Any unique setups that make your work easier? I think this will be a fun challenge. I can't wait to peek inside your world. Have Fun!2 points -
Just projects

Completed my first "official" scroll project. I love the sun/moon images. I have them all over. Now, I have one that I created. I put a couple of coats of deft on it. Decided that there was no better place to put it than on my new cabinet from where it came. The first of many to come. First lesson learned.....relax.2 points -
Finished my chess set after starting on it about two years ago. Set it aside doing other projects knocked off the dust and finished it. Made with cherry, walnut and poplar. The pieces are from Diana Thompson's pattern. They are made out of poplar and the dark ones are stained walnut. The board pattern came from Woodworker's Journal, Rick White. I made every thing 3/4" bigger to go with the bigger chess pieces. The size is 4 1/2" x 21". I think I will make a table for it. May take another two years LOL.2 points

Lowes sells them too. As does some hardware and paint stores.2 points -
When painting I usually do a quick coat of something clear. I use the same acrylic top coat that I use for the finish, but you could use the pre-stain stuff. The first coat seals the grain a bit and make the pain go on a bit smoother. I use acrylic craft paint. I typically use this stuff from Michael's, but there are other similar brands at all the craft stores and even walmart.2 points

I paint mdf projects by sealer or primer first then paint spray or craft paint. I very rarely paint real wood. Fredfret2 points

Call RBI and give them the serial number. Ask them if it has one of them Fasco motors which had problems. I had done that. Good luck Sam2 points -

I don't paint a lot of my work. The few pieces I do I use a water based craft paint. Seal the project first to prevent raising the fibers.2 points -
Painting projects

The sun/moon was my first scroll saw project that I painted. It was painted after. I use spray paint. It takes some time because it has to be taped off to paint the different colors. If it's going to be a saved project, I would spray a clear coat sealer after all the painting is done.2 points -

Something you can do for keeping the lids so they twist off easily is to wrap the threads of the jar with Teflon tape. Same stuff used for plumbing. Finish won't stick to it so opening and closing is good. If the tape wears thin or anything just re-wrap the threads on the jar and your good to go. I learned this one the hard way while using canning or mason jars to keep special blends in. Wrap the clockwise and apply about 3 layers of tape seemed to work best for me.2 points -
Mayo jars, thanks Dan. I use lots of mayo so I can get all my cholesterol in one shot. I'll save them. I'm thinking I could place wax paper on the top before screwing on the lid. I also like to see through the glass.2 points

frame HELP!!! please
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
The formula as I've read it is: W of piece + w of framing * 2, - width of rabbet. So, an 11 x 14 piece with a 2" frame with a 1/4" rabbet should be: W = 11 + 4 - 1/2 = 14 1/2 W = 14 + 4 - 1/2 14 1/2 x 17 1/2 HOWEVER - that never works for me LOL - I simply measure the width of the piece and that becomes the "short" edge of the miter and subtract the width of the rabbet. I prefer to use 'L" molding rather than fuss with miter cuts since I've not used my router more than once LOL Also, I always cut both sides together so they are always the same length - top and bottom have to be equal and left and right have to be equal2 points -
frame HELP!!! please
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
The easiest way I found and quickest is to cut the miter on one end. I go back to my bench, lay the art work on the frame upside down and mark the corner of the art work. Take a small carpenters square and bring that mark up to the top, line up the blade on my chop saw then make the mitered cut. Seems to eliminate getting measurements wrong and does not take much time to do it this.2 points -

I use 50/50 BLO and mineral spirits. I also use some other things for finishing. My problem is, when I put those things in a jar to save them I have a problem removing the lids when I use them again. So the question is how do others store these things? I am thinking of finding something like a plastic container with a plastic lid that won't stick when trying to open it. So, give me some advice.1 point

i use a lot of luan. it is so easy to pull fibers out as you remove tape. i have learned to use blue tape only to tape layers together for stack cutting and applying "Duck" clear shelf paper to glue the pattern down. but above all never remove either "with the grain". slowly remove across the grain and you will have much less tear out. -chris1 point
