    Cardinal's manager

That jealous place that drags me away from the saw (i.e. work) brought the manager of the St Louis Cardinals to campus. They asked me to do a piece for him to sign and then auction off for a benefit. I made these two,. One to auction and one for him to keep. He loved it. The only fee I asked was to let me get a picture with him.

    Love Door

Whilst at a local charity for brain tumour patients that I volunteer at a guy I have known for a while said he had found a door in the skip and challenged me to make something out of it to make it worth keeping, he has recently tied the knot with a lady he met whilst sat on a bench in the park. I came up with this and will hand it back to him next week when I go in. Hopefully he likes what I have done and holds onto the door.

  8. Here is my first Puzzle cut project - this was a lot of fun, and a bit hectic. I prepared the wood with the sticky shelf paper, then glued the pattern to the wood. When I started cutting, realized I glued the pattern to the wrong side and glued it to the bare wood... OH NO! I kept going, and had to hold the pattern down because it kept coming off the wood! Any way, I made it through the cut. I used 2, 1x3 pine boards joined together as the base. Cut with one of my new Pegas 3 MG blades. No finish yet, not sure what I want to do with it - may end up being painted? Comments, and suggestions welcome. One picture laying down, one standing Cherry stained the Dragon with a semi gloss spray lacquer Please feel free to critique, it's the only way I'm going to get better at this point! Thanks as always in advance for looking!

  11. Howdy all. I love running SSV and am happy to provide a place for folks to talk shop. But, SSV is a big place with lots of posts and forums and other nooks and crannies, it's hard to keep up with. If you need my attention for whatever reason, please tag me or send me a PM. Otherwise, there is a high likelyhood that I'll miss your post. Tagging is great for mentions, or questions for a person that are relevant to the thread. Naturally, private matters should be done with a private message. If a particular post is problematic, you can always click the "Report Post" in the upper right corner of the post. A moderator will take a look at it. You can tag any member by putting the @ symbol before their name. This will put a notification on their notification bell at the top of the screen. So mine would be @Travis. I hate missing questions directed at me and it goes unanswered. I don't want anybody to think I'm ignoring them. I probably just missed it. I hope this helps. Thanks All!

  13. I came to the same conclusion. Life is already too short but to waste time making something that can be bought, even though the price gags you, your time is better spent on actually doing something you enjoy. Ray

  15. OK. Now that you have all settled down I'm going to show you my dust collection system. I need to go to Woodcraft and get another gate and rework some things. I visited the local ACE and picked up some odds and ends. The hose that terminates under the saw table comes from my CPAP machine. It couples perfectly to 1" PVC. The green hold down clamps are of my own invention. Real men use duct tape. I use painters tape. Not sure what it says about me. The 1" tubing is six feet long so only used a short piece. I did find out that reducing the suction intake does not increase suction but does the opposite. However, it has plenty suction to do the job. I plan to replace the green clamps with clamps made with rare earth magnets. Soooooooooooo here comes Dust Control. I've settled on the last photo that I'll go with.

  16. I never even heard of sanding mops until I noticed this thread. I'm not sure whether or not I would have a use for one, so now I'm off to do some research. I can tell you that I'm pretty sure that if I decide that one would be of use to me, I won't spend my time making one -I will buy it.

  17. The one being discussed here is the sanding mop. Tgiro has a great example of how to make them. I made them in a very similar manner and wore out multiple blades cutting them. Can you save some money....yes. But, I just buy the refills. The second picture that octoolguy posted is a Mac Mop. I use it for more delicate work while a sanding mop for heavier work. You can also vary how they work by changing speeds. My drill press has infinitely variable speed by turning a knob so easy to find best setup for each sanding operation.

  18. A few years ago, I read an article on Steve Goode's blog on making sand mops -- http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.co...-on-cheap.html So, I ordered some Gold Flex sanding rolls from Klingspor and tried it. It worked great. But did I save any money? A little bit. At Klingspor, a 2" wide roll cost $14.95 and the mandrel cost $9.95 = $24.80. A pack of 48 pre-cut strips cost $29.95, with the mandrell = $39.80. But you have to consider the cost of drilling and cutting the strips. You will be cutting cloth backed sandpaper, so blades do not last very long. I use the FD-HD blades which cost about 50 cents each. It takes 6 - 7 blades to cut the fingers in the strips - add $3.50. One of the pictures, below, shows what happens to blades after cutting 6 2" lines. You need to drill a 1/2" hole through the strips. Don't try that unless you have a method for sharpening drill bits. I use a Drill Doctor, but not everyone has something like that. By making your own, you will get 60 strips out of a roll of sand paper, vice the 48 that comes in a pack. So, you will have a bit larger mop than a pre-cut one. A well used mop will last two or three years (at least mine do). Now that I only have to buy the sanding roll and blades I get away with a cost of $18.50 per mop - plus the time it takes to make it. Compared to the $29.95 for pre-cut strips, I save money. But, I'm a retired hobbyist. A production shop would have to reconsider time & materials. Something to consider - save a little money by rolling your own.

  22. I went to Labcor today to have a blood draw. I was wearing a red shirt. When the little gal was about to wrap my arm I asked if she had wrap that would coordinate with my shirt. Sure enough she reached in a drawer and came up with a red wrap. I could perhaps, find red painters tape to match the saw.

  23. Nice shop Kevin, 24x32 is still not enough room is it. I have 30x33 and still need more. I have to give up one bay for my wife's car during winter. I wish it would stay warm very soon so I can reclaim the whole garage.

  24. This kind of discussion seems to come up every few months and I guess I really don't understand it - there are - at least for me - a few items where I notice costs - and replacing my sanding mop refills is not one of them - they last forever - in my six years of scrollsawing I have purchased sanding mops twice (I checked) - both times I purchased two refills - and still have a spare refill waiting for the next time I need it - so I guess what I am saying is that sanding mops are not a big expense. My top three expenditures - by a lot - are: propane (winter heat); hardwood (walnut, oak, cherry, elm); and rattle can polyurethane - any significant costs associated with purchasing sanding mops refills really don't even get to the ball park. 28. I used to wish for a four car garage allowing me to work on my cars. That was a longtime ago. Now I can scarcely bend over. I envy my son-in-law that does all his own auto work. My friend that completely restored his 1967 Caddy. You are fortunate not only to scroll successfully but have room to work on other projects like your cars.

  29. I use Danish oil on puzzles. I put the pieces in a zip loc bag with the Danish Oil and shake them up. I take them out, dry with paper towel and put on wire rack to dry. Some sanding may be needed if your finish raises the grain. The one below was done with two different colors of Danish Oil.

  32. i am sure i am not the only one so i would like to brag about my wife ( spouse ). without her support and moreover her encouragement in my scrolling endears it would not be so much fun. she always has an kind word and gentile push to help me go where my heart and saw sends me. today she gave me this stamp.... she told me "you should put this on the back of all of your projects to remind yourself to create what brings you joy and to inspire others." she is more than i deserve and all that i could hope for. so.... 3 Cheers for those that have our backs and our hearts! (thank you " your spouse's name here "I Love You)

  35. If you already own the correct sandpaper to make them from probably worth it to make em but if you have to buy the cloth back paper it's cheaper to just buy them. That's What I found when I was looking anyway. I'm sure the manufacturers know this and price accordingly. I doubt it's a coincidence it's just about same cost to make as to purchase.

    Hawk Dust Blower

Brad, I have the link-loc from Bushton. To mount it requires drilling holes in the stationary arm. The bracket supplied will not work so I'll have to fabricate another one. Also the link-loc is way too long. I'll have to remove four or five links. I"ll have to remove the arm which is easy in order to drill and tap the arm. They did not make it simple.

  43. Oh, I forgot. When I was in Texas with my Army buddies, I discovered something that I did not know. My friend was talking about how they had purchased 5 different VW Vans over their married life. He had enjoyed them so much that he was even thinking about getting another one. Immediately, I decided to cut one for him as a little surprise gift. So I did and it is on it's way to him now. Fun to surprise someone with a gift they did not know they were going to receive.
