What a relief!
amazingkevin and 3 others reacted to Old Joe for a topic
I have gotten into doing relief scrolls as of late. I did a few variations of Steve Good's Wood Spirit a while ago. Yesterday I finished this Kopopelli Arrowhead adapted from a pattern that I think I found on here, but now I regrettably can't find it to give credit where credit is due, though making it into a relief piece was my idea. At first I made a mistake, thought it was kindling, but then figured a way to save it. It came out "okay." The second relief is from a Steve Good butterfly relief done out of African Padauk. I wasn't thrilled with the empty fretwork, so I filled it with colorful Fimo clay, baked it and got a quasi-inlay effect.4 points -

Hi guys and gals. Well I gave this a shot. It's one of Steve Goods patterns. I was able to cut two at a time so I can keep one and give the other one away. They are a little tough to put together without getting any glue squeezing out. I still have to other one to put together yet. I have to see if I can get the pattern that Dick did. I like that one to. This is almost 3 inches tall and 10 inches wide, cut with # 3/0 reverse.3 points

An elementary school teacher from a nearby town contacted our club to ask us to give a demonstration of things to make/do with wood working tools. We spent two hours there with the 24 children ranging in ages from four to eleven. We brought ,with us, toys that were finished but needed wheels installed. Those that wanted to , painted them (cars and critters) and installed the wheels. Five guys from our club attended and we had the kids nailing into boards, (they loved that) nailing together small bird houses and installing the wheels. I also brought thirty 3-d cut horses and I taped them back together after cutting so the kids could take the pieces apart and reveal the horse inside. It is good we had five of us there. Four would also have worked but no less. There were three teachers there to help, also. With all that adult supervision the children were very well behaved. (Of course, a lot more fun than arithmetic!)3 points

I am gluing up a detailed fret piece that has sections the need to be glued together. I was wondering how I was going to clamp the pieces, I did not have any real small clamps. Then I thought of something. Wood clothes pins. I ground the ends down on my disc sander so they would fit in the small spaces and it has worked great. Here is a picture of one clamped section. I stood up one of the "clamps" so you can see how I sanded it. It only took a few minutes to sand the ends of 10 on the disc sander. I don't know what my wife will say when she discovers some of her clothes pins are gone.... She rarely uses them anyway.2 points

Reverse Blades
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to Rockytime for a topic
Hi Bill, I do exactly what you do. Sometimes. Every so often I think I can make this corner, no problem and I bind the blade. I was cutting 1/2" oak with a #7 FD Ultra reverse. Onsofter or thinner woods I do not have a problem.2 points -
Reverse Blades
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I've had reverse tooth blades grab for me from time to time. Mostly, I figure it's because I wasn't holding the piece securely or trying to take a turn to quickly, especially in thicker material. When I'm cutting very sharp inside corners, I like to follow the line into the corner, stop, back out a little, then cut across the waste area to the intersecting line. Then I'll cut into the corner point from the intersecting line, turn around in the newly made opening and proceed to cut along the next line. This allows me to cut a sharp point, without trying to spin so hard in the corner, where grabbing can be a problem.2 points -

Use them all the time. I mentioned this many times here. I use Penguin silver reverse #5 FD blades in just about all my cuttings. I cut mostly red oak maple, walnut and never ever ever ever had a problem with pulling up of wood. I allow the saw to do the cutting and do not push. never in a hurry here.2 points -
15 hour day... I'm beat...
frankorona reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
My biggest 1 day event is DONE! It was my best 1 day event last year selling 96 puzzles. And today, I sold... 96 puzzles... and not only that, but I made EXACTLY the same amount of money. That's like a one in a gazillion possibility... well not quite, but it's still mind boggling. Perfect weather, huge crowd. 96 puzzles in 8 hours = 1 every five minutes... EXHAUSTING. Load in time for my zone was 5:30am-6:30am, I got there at 5:45. I just got home after the 2 1/2 hour drive. I'll see ya all in about a week. :-) Iggy1 point -

A few related suggestions 1 If your clothes pins are made from wood, add a coat or two of shellac or poly to them and it will keep the wood glue from sticking to them. 2. Plastic clothes pins also will not allow wood glue to stick to them. 3. Plastic clothes pins can also be found in areas whee they sell the snack bag clips for keeping your potato chips, etc. fresh and there are wider ones available too. Charley1 point

The Right Font Problem
oldhudson reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Here is a small modification for the small areas that may help some. If you are cutting it into a plaque , you will need these openings as I did with the 'D' and 'G' or you will end up with a hole instead of a letter, But I guess you probably already know all this. Just trying to help with a suggestion Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Really nice, Dick. You are always several steps ahead of me. I like that bowl so well I bought three of his bowl patterns. Thought I would do them in order of my reprieved difficulty. This one the most difficult. I haven't got to any of them yet.1 point -

Reverse Blades

I bought some Pegas blades to try as there has been so much hype on them. I found that I did not care for them because they are too aggressive for my liking. However, It I was cutting3/4 inch hardwood, they will be the blade I will use. the teeth are bigger on them then other brands, hence the aggressive character. But as far a reversible blades go, I doubt I will ever buy blades that are not reversible for most of the things I cut. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
