    Yin and Yang

Finished this yesterday for my Granddaughter. I want to thank Alex Fox for the pattern. It's about 8 inches in diameter. Made out BB plywood and one stained.

  4. As I outlined in the thread: Steve has been providing several Stick(wo)man patterns in his daily blog and I am making a few of them. Today, he has offered plans for a chess set and board and asks $5 for it. I have already downloaded it and will start work on it soon. Here are a few photos of the set: Notice the way that the board rises on both sides. Here is a link to Steve's announcement of the availability of the plans: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/2018/04/clockclock-scroll-saw-pattern-stickman.html

  5. This is a Steve Goods pattern I wanted to try. I used poplar and it's about 8 inches tall. It was a little tricky to do but I managed to finish it. I started out using a #5 polar but when I cut out the U and the V, I noticed that the underside was a little wider when I took the scrap piece out. I guess the blade was wandering a little underneath so I changed to a #7 polar and seem to cut a little better but it was a slow process. The block of wood was 1.5 x 1.5. Maybe I'lll try a #9

  6. I personally like a round backer but bobscroll's idea may be the best of all.

  7. I don't saw in the winter. Take my Delta apart every fall for greasing. Have learned to stand 2 X 4s on edge along the edge of the bench top to form a fence. You will have pieces try to reach earth orbit. Learned that the hard way after spending 30 minutes looking for a piece. jerry

  8. Great deal if it's truly what he says.. as for the picture.. looks to me to be a stock photo from a web site that sells them rather than an actual photo of the saw.. which is a real turn off for me when looking online.. I certainly wouldn't drive very far to look at an item with stock photos like that... also could be a scam.. may not even have a saw.. LOL

  9. Hi Kevin...A square backer with ornamental pieces in the corners maybe? Great looking clocks by the way!!! Bob

  10. You know what would be nice if you take photos of what you are doing or anyone for that matter to document it for others to see and refer to. seems there are many Dewalt users here and they seem to be constantly looked at and worked on. It would be nice to archive some photos of work being done on them. Maybe this thought can be applied to other saws as well if you have to do major surgery on them. Just a thought and I have plenty of those.

  11. BLO is an acronym for boiled linseed oil. MS is mineral spirits. For a 50/50 mix you add equal parts oil and mineral spirits. It thins the oil down so that it is more easily absorbed into the wood. Steve - love that pattern. Very nice job cutting!

  12. It's taken me a long elapsed time to complete cutting and painting all the pieces, but I finally managed to find the time. Here is a photo: Next I need to work on a drawer under the board to hold the pieces. This was not in Steve's plans

    Dewalt DW788 Rebuild

Just starting to rebuild a 788 I picked up. Ordered the bearings and sleeves as suggested in previous posts, short of some wear on the screws (to be replaced) and some sloppiness around the smaller bearings the unit seems to be in good shape. I had a question about the large, sealed bearing on the motor end of the "con rod assy" (connector rod assembly? Part Number 286280-00). Should this have a loose fit between the bearing and the rod? I can move the rod almost a quarter inch in and out of the bearing. Pretty sure if I worked it enough, the rod would come right off the bearing, leaving the bearing attached to the counterweight. Is this normal? Thanks

I decided to paint the second bowl to see how it would look. What do you think. Plain or painted.

Why is BB pw a better choice?

  17. I just cut across one corner with a sharp knife, cutting only halfway through either side, bend the cut corner and peel.

  18. A circle cutting jig is very simple to make and use. Do a youtube search and you'll see what I mean. Not much involved at all.

  19. The way I do things like that, with using a backer, I do all the fret work first but not the outer cut, then tape the 2 together (the fret and backer ) and cut them both out together this way they are both perfect to each other, RJ

  20. Yeah I have a bandsaw.. but I need practice using it to cut a circle, LOL.. I can get decent results stack cutting the backers and clock pieces out at the same time.. but. I also like to enlarge the backer a little bit 1/4" or so larger than the clock face.. just think it gives a nicer look.. that is if i can cut them and glue them nice and even LOL...

    MDF

I hae herd that MDF is hard on your lungs. I would use Baldic Berch ply the cost is about $20 pr 5'x 5' sheet. I stack 2 pieces at a time. IKE

    Dewalt DW788 Rebuild

No. Absolutely not. On mine, the bearing was not extremely tight but it didn't move like that. I still had to "knock" it out with a hammer and punch but it wasn't difficult. I keep an eye on mine. I think the connecting rod is stretching on all of the saws and it allows the bearing to loosen up. I'd purchase a new rod. I think it might come with the bearing installed. Not sure. That could be your vibration if you are chasing one. On my saw, I found the other end of that rod had come loose. After tightening the screw I solved about 99% of my vibration but I still went through and checked all the bearings and sleeves. Be sure to get some good synthetic grease. You can get a one pound can on Amazon for about $12 if I recall. I used a pipe cleaner to grease everything. No need for the injector needle that Bob Brokaw used. Good luck and let us know how it comes out. Ray

    Letter spacing in Word?

yes it is called kerning. I don't use Word but is probably in format area. You can generally kern with the arrow keys in very small steps. Oh no I remember it is in the font area on the home tab in Word.

    MDF

Baltic Birch plywood in my opinion would be a better choice. I have seen people just use a clear finish on them and sell them. Gives people an option to paint their own colors if they want. Probably cost is close. MDF would never be my choice of materials for crafting. Just my opinion.

    Painted Bowl

I'm going to point out the obvious, as you can clearly see, woodworkers (such as we have here) typically are going to prefer the "plain" show me the wood look BUT if you are trying to figure out what a "customer" would like, you would get a lot more for the painted look probably. So, you might have both available if you are looking to sell and see which ones work for selling. You can always have a painted one to see and take orders for "painted" with color selections available and that saves from having to paint some until you "need" them. Good job.

This is a Sue Mey pattern and it is the first time that I used the torch to burn the wood, I kind of like the results.

  36. As long as the wife is away for a few days, I thought I would just go make her something more to add to the basket, I cut for her a couple of days ago, to give her for Mother's Day. I only had some BB Ply to use so that is what she gets this time. This is a pattern from the newest Scroll saw woodworking and crafts magazine. She saw it and liked it and even said she wanted me to make her one, some day. So that day has come. Dick heppnerguy

Where in Indiana? There's a lumber yard in Cincinnati that carries a great assortment of hardwoods, softwood, and exotics for reasonable prices.

I use Rustoleum 2x paint and primer for my spraypaint stuff. They have an nice assortment of colors and even some glitter types. I use the clear version for the top coat of most of my projects.

    MDF

I always prime mdf before painting. I like tinted shellac, but it's spendy, and I've only seen it in gallons. Plus I use dry wall putty on the edges (I use Red Devil Vinyl) it fills that open 'grain'. Another good product to seal/prime is Zinsser, their cover - stain formula. Zinsser I'm sure you can get in a quart at any BBS.
