This is a little something I cut out yesterday for my Grandson who plays the Saxophone. Made out of 1/2 inch Oak and Walnut and stands 8 inches tall. This is one of Steve Goods patterns. Pretty easy cut with a UR#3.Hope he likes it.

  8. My first SS was a new Craftsman about 4 of 5 years ago. It lasted 4 months before it needed warranty work. Then I found a Type 1 Dewalt on CL and after a year or so learned to top feed. I really liked top feeding and it helped doing fretwork like the piece in my avatar. Thought I would never go back. These days I am doing more intarsia and no detailed fretwork and the Dewalt is like me (getting old and tired ). So, I just got a Hegner 18-V for an REALLY good price from a scroller friend. Its older, but seems to have all the options I would want. I scroll from a chair, so the stand had to go. I am just starting to learn to use it so here are some of my initial impressions. The table has a really nice finish! Wish it were bigger!!! The cut is not as aggressive as the Dewalt, but I think that makes it more accurate – at least for me. Because of the lower vibration level, I can turn the speed up and still feel in control. All the cast iron frame parts look impressive. Interesting blade clamps, especially have using the Dewalt. The Quick Clamp is nice, but I am surprised there isn’t an different option for the bottom clamp. Bottom feeding on the Hegner is overall not as bad as I thought it would be. I did it before and can do it again. I knew going in, that fretwork was not Hegner's strong point, so I pushed my other three project aside and started a new one – Steve Good’s eagle. I enlarged it to 15” across and am using 3/4” oak. Thought this would be a good test for the saw (and me) and it is. I still need to set up dust collection for the lower end but so far I am a happy camper! Jim

  13. I've now finished the remaining 5 pieces of this limited edition and will be driving to Hearst in the next few days to deliver them (among other things). By the way, there is still a lot of ice on Lake Pivabiska so I am not sure that I will be able to make it to Pellow's Island on this visit. This picture was taken this morning:

  15. The first pic is from today. The others from a few months ago. Small, cramped, cluttered, and dusty, but it's mine. When we built our house, I had the extra bay built with a wall and door between it and where we park our cars. I built the floor furniture. Everything but the two work benches (far wall and far left) are on casters. I put my bench grinder on my table saw when I shape my intarsia pieces. Most all my projects are scrolling, with an occasional honeydo for the house. I give the shop and tools a good cleaning between most projects.

  16. I am working on a project of 1/8" baltic birch with 1/8" backer and mounting in picture frame. I got my fretwork done...........made a backer just a bit bigger......painted it...........used MMM spray glue on the back of the fretwork and applied it to the backer. Worked out great for me.

  20. Wow. I don't know what I should be more impressed with? The size - it's larger than the lot my house sits on. The wealth of equipment - I counted 3 band saws THREE. The cleanliness - my goodness do you have paid staff that comes in and cleans the shop every night? Beyond belief, maybe all the pics are "photoshopped"

    Top feeder no longer

It is interesting, but I have a Hegner.... would never part with it unless it was a trade in for a newer Hegner. I find it easier to bottom feed on than my Seyco for some reason. I really don't understand why, the upper arm does not go as high as the Seyco but it is easier for me. And I do intricate fret work all the time on it. Smaller table yes, but I increased the size of mine with a piece of 1/8" masonite easily. Anyway, Congrats on your new to you saw. Oh, and I really have no problem with the lower blade clamp, but I do not scroll to make money nor am I in a hurry. I am just totally comfortable with the Hegner.

    Use Dewalt question...

I would also be looking for excess vibration. Mine had some vibration problems that were corrected by disassembling it and checking for loose screws or bolts. It turned out that mine had the main drive bolt coming loose. I tightened that up and cured most of my vibration. The rest was just in cleaning and repacking the bearings in all joints. If it runs smoothly and cuts as it should, $250 is not a bad price. I paid that same amount for mine and it came with the factory stand and light. I use neither of them anymore though. I built my own stand and I bought a H/F magnifier lamp. Good luck with your negotiations but try to get it for less than the asking price. R

    Trophies

I'm with Frank, I often use that guy. If you click on the face, and then click on Categories on the top right side of the box that opens, and then select "Emoticons" - you will find the original ones we have always had here on the forum. Once you use it, it will appear at the top in your "recently used" list. Those of curse will change around as you start to use them so if you use him regularly like Frank and I, it should stay in our recent list. I found it interesting though that the "oops" or "embarrassed" is not a "standard" emoji. I even double-checked on my phone and iPad and looked pretty closely and is not there. I think it needs to be added to the "standard" emojis!

Looks like they are back now. I see them under all 3 of your names next to your post. Looks like we got a lot more new emojis under the emoji face too. Thanks Travis for all you do to keep the village fresh and updated.

    Trophies

Nope. They're still around. The trophies under your avatar on the forums was causing some issues yesterday, so I turned off the display. But they're still available on your profile. I'm updating some software this week. I'm hoping the update will fix my issues and I"ll turn on the display again.

  49. The main portion of my shop is 12 x 14 on the lower level of a bi-level home. The space is supposed to be a bedroom. I have forced air HVAC and blocked the vents. The ceiling is really low, especially where the HVAC runs are - but I'm really short so not much of an issue. Many of the pics here are a few years old, none the less everything is essentially the same. I supposed some equipment may have been purchased or moved? I have one window but it's full of stuff like my 20" box fan dust collector. The door is in the SW corner. I'm a Shopsmith user. It's my main power tool and you'll see it in my pics. It's my table saw, belt and disk sander, lath, band saw, jointer and drill press. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to put comments with specific pics so.... I'll point out a couple of things here, sorry. In pic one is a bench I made. In the 5th pic is my router table and in the 4th you can see how I store it so I can keep the floor space open. Notice that the tables are actually different. In one is a Rockler and in the other a Kreg, a more recent pic. In pic 6 is the Shopsmith set up in drill press mode. I drill 37mm holes for cabinet doors. In pic 8 & 9 is a drying rack I made. It's great if you have lots of parts drying. I've mentioned before in a couple of threads I prefer to apply finish before assembly. In the next pic you can see how I store it in the garage. Pic 10 is the flip top work station planer and chop saw. It looks a lot different today because I've take sets to collect more dust from the saw. I posted a thread about it some time ago. Pic 12 is the Shopsmith in band saw configuration. I was cutting a large piece. The last pic is the Shopsmith in table saw mode with a hand made cantilevered out-feed table. The new portion of the shop I'll post tomorrow. As it turns out it took a lot longer to post these other pics.
