Been away from the Village for a few weeks. Miss alll the good folks and their great work! My wife and I have been in Vermont 4 out of the last 5 weeks house hunting. Leaving Saturday for another 4 days. I did get to complete another Indian portrait during the few days we were home....It needs shellac and mount and then I'll post it .Settlementt here in Maryland is Aug 23 if all goes well , so we need to find a new place ASAP! But anyone who has sold and bought a home knows that the deal can go south real quick and leave all parties empty handed! Stressful times!!! See you all soon and be safe!! Lew2 points

For the first time in forever, General has updated their website. It has literally been years and prior to this update, it looked like the site had been abandoned. I guess General Lives . . . for now. They better get quality up on their Chinese production lines or it will be short lived. ------Randy1 point

Finishes Mixing Your Own??
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Finishing really can be an art, unto itself. It sounds intimidating and complicated, which is why many woodworkers dread it and usually pick the simplest type of finish and use it for everything. Personally, I think that philosophy leads us to miss out on a lot of benefits of using different products and application methods that may be better suited to specific applications. I recommend either or both of these books for anyone who wants to learn more about finishing. https://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Wood-Finishing-Comprehensive-Troubleshooting/dp/1565235665 https://www.amazon.com/Tauntons-Complete-Illustrated-Finishing-Taunton/dp/1627107673 Every woodworker who struggles with choosing and applying finishes would benefit from either of these books. They really contain a wealth of knowledge, borne out of the authors' own experiences.1 point -
I cut a lot of basswood and do not have much problem as described. I bet it is Balsa. Somewhat softer than Basswood, although it hard for me to imagine them making wine boxes out of Balsa wood..... I have not seen many wine boxes in my life... I buy the cheap stuff!!1 point

Saving Used Blades
OCtoolguy reacted to SCROLLSAW703 for a topic
I used to keep used blades separate from my new ones until I invested in my first Hawk. I kept enough blades in clamps, there weren't any need to keep used blades anymore. I do the same with my BM 26. Once I've worn out the blade in the clamp, it gets pitched in the trash & a new blade replaces it in the clamp ready for when it's needed. One of the many benefits of Hawk ownership.;)1 point -

maybe some confusion on your order date, miss marge? I live in NW Kansas & get my order from them in 2 days. Realizin' of course you bein' in Australia, shipping may take a bit longer. An email to them with your order date may be a consideration, ma'am.1 point -
I've been wanting to purchase a Klingspoor sander for some time and finally did so. I bought the 6" because the larger ones would interfere with my dust collector. I spent last evening breaking it in on some scrap wood. I had been using a Scotch Brite 2" ball and it did fair. I can see the Klingspoor 220 grit can be quite agressive. I'll have to be gentle. It seemed to me I still need something for de-fuzzing small areas. I have several Dremels which work but are not that convenient, having to hold the Dremel in one hand and the scrolled piece in another. I had sheets of Scotch Brite left over when restoring a milling machine. A sheet of Scoth Brite, sharp knife or scissors, a 1/4-20 bolt any length, two 1/4-20 nuts and two fender washers. I used just one layer of Scoth Brite but they could be piled up to make a thicker unit. Instead of punching a hole I just cut an X near the center of the pad with a knife. It works beautifully in narrow slots and other small areas. The grey pad is less aggressive than the green. Scotch Brite is readily available nearly everywhere. I bought mine on Amazon. It's a cheap little device and works great. Scotch Brite can be sometimes stolen from the kitchen but you did not heard it from me.1 point

I have started putting my sanding mop in my cordless drill to defuzz my 1/8" and 1/4" fretwork. I will lay it on a piece of plywood to give it support while I run my sanding mop over it.1 point -
Your chair looks very comfortable. I have two chairs which are similar in my clock shop. However, they are too low. They are similar to those in a doctors office. They are adjustable and comfortable. I really need an adjustable drafting chair but am too cheap to buy one.1 point

Making Checkers
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to trackman for a topic
I have a checker board that I made awhile back. Now I need to make a set of checkers to go with it. I was thinking about 1 1/4” around. Now the question, what would be some of your ideas on best way to make them? Thanks1 point -

SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Hummm, I would do it on a lathe, and as the part off each piece, I'd cut a recess on one side and a small rabbet on the other so I could stack two together when they are "kinged". Well, maybe I wouldn't be good enough with the lathe to do it, but I would think about....1 point -
Lesson Learned
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to rdatelle for a topic
Well after reading all these posts I decided to go check my saw for square. Sure enough, it wasn't square. I guess I forgot to set it back to zero after I did a compound cut. It was 2 degrees off. I was wondering why some of my cuts were off a little. I keep a little block of wood with a straight line on it and all I do is place it behind the blade to square it up.1 point -

Saving Used Blades
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
If I have a blade that still has life left in it I do as Kevin does, have a bunch of extra clamps and just leave in a clamp and place it in the package the blade came in. I use very limited amount different sized blades so no problem storing them. I always keep blades in package they came in. just nip corner off top and take out blades as need be.1 point
