Still Chasing planes. Found a line drawing of a Lockheed Constellation ( not a super) built a lot of bridges (3D paint). A beautiful Queen of the Sky. Looking at a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser for my next project. Missed the age of luxury flying. Too many trips on a 737 middle seat, row 24 and the vent and recliner were broke and #24 for departure.5 points

I made this as a special order: Cedar box measures 9"x 7" x 2.25". Inlay the name in the normal way but applied the logo on top of the box using a method I used to decorate boxes before I learned to do inlay. I printed this image onto tissue paper that I had attached to regular printer paper. Printed this on my inkjet printer. When the tissue, with the image on it, is laid on the box I wipe on thinned poly and most of the tissue paper "disappears" The tissue paper covers the whole lid, edge to edge. It is a fussy procedure and works better with smaller images. Easier to get wrinkles out of smaller pieces. Three coats of wipe on poly.5 points

Hi everyone, Just wanted to show this word art sign I just finished. I want to thank Wayne Mahler for doing this pattern for me. He did a great job on it. I hope I did it justice. Thanks again Wayne. All you pattern makers are so appreciated that you can't even imagine. Us less talented scrollers wouldn't know what to do with out you all. Thanks again to all of you. Ralph.4 points

I mentioned in a post recently that Harvey was undergoing heart surgery. He just called me from his hospital room to let me know the surgery went well yesterday. What was supposed to be a 4 hours surgery ended up being 8 hours as things were a bit more complicated than they saw on the MRI, etc. But the end result is positive. He'll be in the hospital for 3 or 4 days, then home to recuperate. He'll call me when he feels up to drawing custom patterns, which should be pretty quick since he'll be bored just sitting around. I have 2 customs ready for him already. Iggy4 points

I agree with John, give it a try. Mask off small sections and label them for whats been done. You'll have the results and can make your decision. IMHO I don't think you will get poplar to look like cherry or oak without more effort than Watco. Here's a picture of a vanity I did a couple of years ago. All the dark wood you see is poplar. I don't remember all the coats nor the order - too old. But I like the look. (Not that it's relevant to the thread, but it might be of interest. The door panels are reeded glass. I painted the backs of the glass with silver paint. The other item I was pretty proud of was the bottom drawer. In most vanities there are double doors that cover the sink plumbing as is used to store bathroom cleaning supplies/equipment. I thought it a waste of space and made that area smaller with a false bottom and added the full width drawer. Great space for towels and tp.) Good luck finding your solution, that's a lot of wood.4 points

the thorn in my side has been making "good" frames. with building stock for the con in oct i needed a frame for every book cover so... i made a jig to make frames fast. with super glue and accelerator i did 11 frames in about 15min 1/4" luan cut into 1/8" strips. and finished on a cover with jewelry box corners to hide my sins... I WAS FRAMED!!!! -chris3 points

Colored / Stain Danish Oil??
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
Might want to consider using a dye. I have and it works pretty good. Mix the dye with denatured alcohol, dries quick and you can achieve the richness of color your want with multiple coats. Then top coat with what you want.3 points -

Colored / Stain Danish Oil??
WayneMahler and one other reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
I too have used dyes to color wood but you are doing something different when dying wood as oppose to staining it. I have used Rit dyes in alcohol but the thing to remember here is it is tough to even out the color if doing a large project because you can see the swipe marks when working with brush or even a rag. Wiping back over a dyed area makes that area darker. I have used this method on birdhouse ornaments but have dipped because they were small enough. If wanting to dye wood then I suggest using TransTint Dyes. Best on the market for depth of color and a little goes a long way.2 points -

Anyone use the Danish oil finish with color / stain added to it? Just wondering what your thoughts are on the stuff.. I have a big pile of Poplar lumber given to me last year.. couldn't refuse the deal.. though I don't care for the look of poplar for many of my projects.. free poplar is free poplar right? Anyway, now I'm setting here getting real low on my Cherry and Oak lumber that I use the most and keep looking at the 150 bft. of Poplar just sitting there.. I realize I'm probably not going to get the "real look" of cherry or oak.. but just wondered how well this Danish stain oil works? I normally use the natural color Danish oil.. ever been a big fanatic of stains etc..but I have a lot of Poplar just sitting here.. who knows.. maybe I'll learn a way to get nice results using this poplar up.. like the way it cuts etc.. and well... price of Poplar it way less than Cherry or Oak.. So anyway since I am not a experienced wood finisher since I've never experimented with anything other than dipping oils.. what is a good way to use up my pile of poplar besides a nice bon fire, LOL ( won't do that for real BTW.. )Just trying to learn new finishing methods etc.. and try to expand my brain a little.. I can put a nice finish on a car or anything metal.. but when it comes to wood........ LOL..... Thanks in advance for your input on finishing procedures etc..1 point

My First 3 Day Event
frankorona reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
A local beach town has a massive July 4th celebration that runs for a solid week. Arts and Crafts vendors get to set up in the local park for 3 days. With July 4th being in the middle of the week, it's Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this year. My first year doing the event. I've heard great things about the event from other vendors that I know. I set a goal of 40 puzzles a day and after getting set up this morning and the start of the event at 10am, I sold 34 in the first 3 hours. I started getting concerned about having enough inventory on hand. But I didn't have to worry for long, I only sold 9 the remaining 5 hours from 1pm to 6pm. LOL As is the case for much of the country we're having a bit of a heat wave here so the crowd dropped off big once the temperatures rose. So, in the end, day 1 was a success selling 43 puzzles. I'll be at it again tomorrow.1 point -

First Projects - Scroll Saw Challenge
Tomanydogs reacted to Travis for a topic
I'll start off. This was my first project. I probably made this around 2007-ish. This was originally a pumpkin stencil that I put onto wood. Cut on birch plywood from Lowes. I don't remember if I used a spiral blade or a flat blade. But this was my maiden voyage. I wanted to get into woodworking, but woodworking can be expensive since you need so many tools. Then I discovered the scroll saw and realized I can do quite a lot with such a simple tool. And thus began my journey.1 point -

I like most all of the hardwoods.. but probably Cherry is my most used wood.. Love to cut walnut but for my projects I find the darker wood doesn't show all the details in the cutting like a lighter wood would.. I get a large amount of my wood from my brothers sawmill or my uncles.. but if they don't have what I'm looking for then I buy it at a local place called Johnson's workbench.. try to only buy it during their wood expo sale.. as they offer some really awesome deals. ave to buy a lot because the expo is only held once a year.. First part of Sept. I under estimated and ran out back in March-April so I've been picking up a few boards here and there from the mill.. but the stuff from the mill is usually not dried out good..1 point

Colored / Stain Danish Oil??
Joe W. reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Kevin I have used the different colored Watco danish oil stains and had good results or at least achieved what I set out to do. Have used med and dark walnut, cherry, fruitwood and a few others. I have also used minwax stains with good results. I have used them on oak and maple only, never poplar. Have done some pine too but that is always blotchy and do not like the look no matter what additive you use. They change the color of the wood which is what they are intended to do. Oils penetrate deeply and can be top coated without problems. Will say this whatever color you use only one coat is needed because with oil you can not deepen color with additional coats. The pigments lay in the grain and build to a point where they can not hold any more. If you start trying additional coats the stain does not dry and becomes a sticky mess. Thus flood the project and let soak and wipe dry and be done. Being I use oak so much I have also learned that if staining it is utmost important to keep wiping dry as the stain will continue to ooze out of the grain and could leave puddles of a sticky mess. Again the warning of disposal of rags is needed to be taken serious. The thing you have to keep in mind is that they color wood, not change texture of wood. In other words no stain is going to make a piece of pine or poplar and make it look like cherry or walnut. It will be able to get the color close to those woods but never exact because of the grain patterns and texture of woods. You wanting to replace the look and color of cherry with poplar will never happen. You are changing the natural look of a wood to imitate another. Now I suggest you give it a try and see for yourself and maybe this look is something you like and use and not treat it as an instead of wood but as an also wood. I use to offer many of my shelves, mirrors and clocks in different colors because people use to be big into darker furniture. Now today light is in so i stopped doing that but can custom make if need be. I never misrepresent wood types though. If cherry is wanted then cherry is what they get.1 point -

I just recently received and installed the same, Pegas Heads for my DW788. I was impressed with how well machined they are and how precision they fit, specifically the precision sleeves that go through the arm bearings and also through the head pivot holes. The stock DW cast heads ride on the threaded part of the mounting screw as the sleeves do not extend beyond the sides of the arm pivot heads/bearings. I started a review of them, but felt I should use them a bit first and have not gotten back to using them yet. One thing that I noticed and am concerned about, despite all the precision in the sleeves and head, the DW bearings (needle bearings) themselves have a lot of slop, so there is still a lot of wiggle in the heads, particularly the lower arm on the upper head. I wonder why there is so much slop in the bearings. Is there a design/function purpose for that, or just cheaper bearings. I checked the bearings to be sure the Pegas sleeves fit properly. The sleeves fit precisely into the bearings and the bearings would not take a precision gauge pin that was 0.001" larger in diameter, so that tells me the slop is within the needle bearings, not the fit between the bearing needles and Pegas sleeve. So, the heads were loose before pulling tension and trying a few small cuts. The heads tightened up a lot when tension was applied to the blade. I was very impressed with how much less sideways blade movement there is and the cuts seemed WAY smoother and easier to control. It was like I wasn't fighting anything anymore, turns were easier and the wood didn't seem to be jumping all over the place. So far, I am quite impressed and pleased. Rick1 point

It seems like I read or heard somewhere that PVC actually is quite toxic. That being said cutting with a scroll saw or sanding it might present some issues that make it a material I wouldn't care to use.1 point

@Travis, just an FYI - I just uploaded a number of different manuals for many of the saws that did not yet have them uploaded. Didn't take too much effort, quick google searches turned up many of them. Just wanted you to know that I had done several in case you suddenly notice a large data storage increase or some other issue. Hopefully not an issue. Right now, all of the saws should have manuals uploaded for them now except for the following which I have not been able to locate. If anyone has one or can find them for these saw, it would be great if you could upload it. If you have the manual, but don't know how to upload it - let me know and I will be happy to help. Those presently listed in the Reviews section and still needing a manual uploaded as of 7/5/2018 are: Eclipse, Excelsior XL-30/100, PS Wood Machines 14" and 21", Rockwell RK7315 (I think I found the parts list only and uploaded it), and the Scheppach Deco 405. I also noticed that the newer Seyco saw is not yet listed. Since I own it, I will add it and get the manual up for it as well.1 point

Very pleased with how these two came out. I don't know what the wood is but it's pretty. I haven't decided whether to back them with black fabric or a black painted wood backer. I do have some good looking grand kids though. Finished...Went with flat black wood backer and made stands from same wood portraits are from.1 point -

I'm getting too old for this stuff... LOL 3 days of hell is complete. As a reminder, this was my first time doing this event so I didn't have any basis for what to expect other than hearing from other vendors how great it is. We were fortunate to have 3 days with no rain at all. But it sure was hot, same as many places in the country right now. The venue is a nice, large, wooded park. However my booth was one of the very few in full sunshine pretty much all day long. If I hadn't taken a large fan with me I'd have roasted. Anyway, all went well, I set a goal of 40 puzzles a day (with a stretch goal of 60 for the final day), my final numbers were Day 1 - 43 Day 2 - 42 Day 3 - 47 I'm consistent if nothing else. I'm very happy, especially considering it was Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. The event always ends on July 4th. So next year it'll be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and I'll likely sign up for it again since I did well this year. I'm skipping my weekly farmers market this Saturday as my inventory is depleted... and I'm exhausted too. I'll enjoy some cutting time the rest of this week while I'm still on vacation from the day job.1 point
