  1. This is my first attempt at whittling. It’s a little rough but I’m happy with it for first one.

  3. I recently got myself some thin sheets of King William Pine from Tasmania. It looks nice and it looks sturdy, I thought it was just right for Christmas ornaments. I have just spent an hour preparing the wood etc., and cutting a special ornament for my son in law but as soon as I started taking the pattern off I knew it was toooooooooooo fragile and yes it broke in two places. Even if its glued back together its still going to be fragile. The moral to this story is, never judge a piece of wood by its beauty. Marg

    Wood jackpot

I bought all this wood for 80$. I am set for a very long time. Well a coup!e of projects and get my money back plus more. The guy I bought it from had it for two years and never did anything out of it so just wanted it out of his garage. My son thought I was crazy. I think it is really cool and already got projects going.

  11. I've taken to using a lot more BB plywood for Christmas ornaments the past several years. I prefer natural wood, but durability is a concern. I also like them to be thin. I think they look less clunky, plus I can stack cut more at a time. Sure, I can carefully and successfully cut and give out 100+ ornaments without any casualties, but these ornaments become keepsakes and are intended to be around for many years. I'm always sad to see one of my ornaments has gotten chipped. I've offered to re-make a few, but the problem is I can't control how the recipients handle and store these ornaments. I usually try to give special warning of their fragility, when possible, but the BB ply seems to offer the best compromise. If I think they need jazzing up a bit, I will use dyes, paints and even spray glitter to lend some color to the otherwise bland look of the BB ply.

I cut this pattern and used it for a #5 Pegas MG test. I had purchased the Pegas blades when I first started scrolling. I knew nothing about blades so I just picked up some Olsen blades as well as a dozen Pegas blades from Woodcraft. I tried the Pegas and did not like them as I thought they were too aggressive. I did not think I could control them. About two years later I had two blades left and tried them on this pattern. Having scrolled for some time they no longer seemed too aggressive. I found that they did not tend to wander off the pattern line. They worked very well on straight cuts. I'm sold. Last evening I ordered a gross including #'s 3, 5, 7, 9 blades. cutting is yet to receive a finish.

  21. I also just used a piece of wood to cut a cross that I was not too sure about. It was a veneered ply but the veneer was really thin. I had to give it a try anyway. I was lucky and only lost a couple of really small pieces of veneer so It will work but I will only use it for backer board from now on. Sorry you had this problem Dick heppnerguy

  35. For those wanting a better understanding of wood finishes, I highly recommend both of these books; https://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Wood-Finishing-Comprehensive-Troubleshooting/dp/1565235665/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1532301945&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=understanding+wood+finishing+bob+flexner&psc=1 https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/tauntons-complete-illustrated-guide-to-finishing-jeff-jewitt/1103130674?ean=9781627107679&st=PLA&sid=BNB_DRS_New+Core+Shopping+Top+Margin+EANs_00000000&2sid=Google_&sourceId=PLGoP211668&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4rqtpe2z3AIVBEwNCh38iA_LEAQYASABEgJYrPD_BwE Both books go pretty deep into aspects of finishing and finishes that are probably more than most hobbiest woodworkers want to know, but they are excellent resources for any woodworker who wants to know more about choosing and applying different finishes. Check them out at the local library if you want to see what they are about, but I think every woodworker should have at least one of these books in their own personal collection.

  36. Kevin, basically if it has the word oil in it it is a penetrating finish which means it gets absorbed into the wood and dries and depending what is mixed with it can harden somewhat. These oils are made from various nuts, seeds and or plants. There are many and there are many different names for the products derived from them. If they are truely pure oils the dry time is greatly increased. Artificial driers are added to shorten this time. As I said add poly or varnish and now you crossed over to the surface finishes. But again with the amount of mixture will determine its state. That is why Danish oils fall in the middle along with tung oil. Now take the percentages up of polys, shellac, wax, varnish and such and these become strictly surface finishes along with lacquers. Then you get into waterbased and oil based. Broken down even further you get into brush-on, wipe-on, spray or combination. The use of all these finishes comes down to the application needed. Feel like wood, withstand elements both surrounding and environmental, ease of use, looks and color, time to dry. Remember when using oils the odor is a factor too and takes longer to dissipate than sealing in with a surface finish. Finishing is a whole world in itself

  39. Welcome to Bob from Edmonton, I am Norm from Nipawin, 10 hours away from the next province east. been to Edmonton many times.there is another Canadian in this blog from Grande Prairie , been there as well in fact in my Crane operating days I had opportunity to erect some steel beams on the train trestle over the Wapiti River, way back some 50 years ago.The fellowship of scrollers is vast and we feel association with each other. The feller from Colorado that is not ashamed of the Gospel often pops up in various blogs, his info is always a treat as is many others.
