Mourning cross
amazingkevin and 8 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
We have a friend whos mother died a week ago. Her mother lived to be 102 years old. She was a wonderful, God loving woman and I just had to make this cross and send to her daughter. The photo is pretty bad but the cross really did turn our nicely. I know they will hang the cross in a place of honor, as the entire family loved this lady so very much. Dick heppnerguy9 points -

I'm not lazy but... I cannot leave good things alone. When doing lots of clamping and un-clamping adjusting the lock line each time becomes irritating. I made a simple swing arm. This allows me to just swing the lock line away from the blade. It has a stop so it always swings back to it's original setting. Easy Peasy3 points

Just finished this one .It seemed to take me ages but I finally got there .The reason I am showing it is because of the large amount of Scroll Saw work involved in it.I am Quite happy about how it turned out but doubt if i would attempt something like this again .I have plenty of patience for my Scroll Saw work but not for something like this. Yes, I have insulated garage doors on my shop as well as the entry door.. insulation below the concrete when it was being built.. If.. I keep the shop shut up my highest temp was 84 on a day that was 98 outside... But.. I only get sun until around mid day.. as once whole side and back is pretty shaded.. and.. as we all know.. heat rises.. I have a loft / upstairs.. It used to get well over 100 up there.. but i insulated the roof ( I have black shingles ) with 3" styrofoam sheets between the trusses. Now it is tolerable up there... You'd be surprised just how much hanging a piece of plastic helps.. I intend to hang up that bubble wrap stuff that has aluminum foil stuff on both sides over my insulation.. They say that stuff does wonders.. even without insulation as the foil is heat reflective.. You can get some nice colors on those doors too.. Below is a few pictures as they was building the shop.. I have three windows in the lower ( workshop area ) one on each side and one in the back corner.. I put my saws so I'm back in the one corner and can look out all three windows.. Up stairs has 4 windows (two on each end.. I do my finishing and have built flooring back behind the main trusses for my storage area.. So the main 14 x 32 area is still open up there.. great for parties when it's a rainy day and this way we don't have everyone inside the house.. intend to build shelving back there with drawers labeled with my finished pieces.. but for now I just use plastic drawers or totes.. which work really well.2 points

You are just too modest, Paul. You are about as good with spiral as anyone out there. I have seen so many amazing things you have cut with your spiral blades and because of your expertise, I am trying to do my work better. I know I will never reach the expertise that you have but don't slack off or, who knows, why down the road I may get just a little closer to being able to cut some of the things you have in your box in your basement.………. You are right, I never will get that good Dick heppnerguy2 points -
Looks like a pro to me. You did you usual awesome job! There will come a day when spirals are just another tool in the box and you will be as comfortable using that tool as any other. I love spirals for many things, but they are just another size, type of blade, just like flat blades only different.... And, I say with a little practice you can cut just as straight a line with a spiral and you can with a flat blade... The only thing I have not been able to do with a spiral is make sharp pointed corners.... well, Charles Dearing (who says he has never used a flat blade) says he can and told how in something I watched several years ago, but doing as he says I am only successful about 30% or less of the time.2 points

I used to be quite active in a number of scroll saw forums, but due to a few different things gave it all away about 6 years ago. Finally got back down the shed, serviced the saws and am having a great time breathing saw dust. Cheers1 point -

Insulated doors are great and keep the shop cooler but I am a nut for light. I added several LED ceiling mounted lights when I set my shop but I wanted more. I have 4 windows in the shop but still not enough. I contacted a garage door company and they installed some upper lighted panels in my garage doors ( 3 car garage) Whow! what a difference. Sun comes in in the morning and I always think I left a light on over night! My work bench faces it and working is so much better. Tech took about 45 minutes to install just the replacement upper panels and adjusted the springs and lubed to make sure they were working properly. Great choice, no regrets!1 point

I stone the back edges of scroll saw and bandsaw blades using this stoning tool, made for this purpose: https://www.highlandwoodworking.com/bladeroundingstone.aspx For bandsaw blades, I just hold it against the back edges and rotate it while it is running. A few small sparks fly off now and then, but generally a very tame operation. I am careful to not rotate it far enough to ever touch the teeth (same for scroll saw blades). For scroll saw blades, I first mount the blades upside down and stone the back corners, and move up and down to be sure to get the entire length of exposes blade as it oscillates up and down. Then I turn the blade over and repeat. This is to ensure the entire usable length of the blade gets stoned. I do this for the two reasons stated earlier, to reduce drift and for making tighter turns. I used to use stones from my father's machinist tool box, but the above stoning tool is substantially coarser and handier to use. Rick1 point

While searching google for miniature cannon plans I came across this site: www.getdrawings.com/civil-war-cannon-drawing Don't know why this does not show as a web address but if you cut and paste into the address line it does work. I downloaded the attached pattern from this site. I took it to Office Depot. They copied it turning it into red and enlarged 200 percent. The red is so much easier to see when cutting. The site has probably been posted before but there are lots of free drawings suitable for scrolling.1 point

Thanks everybody! I will try those polar blades first, as that is the cheapest. I'm 60 and have never really been around scroll saws before. The one I am currently using feels like it is skipping, though that may be the blade. It's only a 100 dollar craftsman. I know some of you do beautiful detailed work with scroll saws, but what I'm working on now is as much as I will be able to do. I enjoy this though - gives the feeling of old time toys at Christmas. Sounds like a polar blade, if I can master it, will leave a lot less finish work for me. Thanks!1 point

Thank you for this post. I had not looked into PS saws before. I see that they look like robust saws and are made in the USA!1 point

Hello everyone!! This time, I bring you a project that I made some months ago, piece by piece. It´s called "Freedom Wings", and the design it´s from the group of the main characters of "Attack on Titan", a manga (a comic kind) that I read. It´s made from 5mm plywood, and i´ve used the natural colour of the plywood for the right wing, and two different dyes: walnut for the left wing, and car oil for the spaces in the emblem and the base I leave you the design in which I focus too, so you can compare it with the result. I could make it blue, white and grey, but I think that all the wood tonalities make it special, and kind of personal too. Hope you like it!!1 point

Custom Racecars!
Lucky2 reacted to harvickfanjoey for a topic
I’ve been very busy lately. Business has been doing really great. I thought I would take a minute and share some of my latest creations with my fellow scrollers. I made my own patterns for all of these. The Sprint Car will be given out as a trophy @ my local dirt track. The 3 CNYUAS Kart trophies are going to Syracuse, NY. They are for the Top 3 in points for the Central New York Unlimited All-Stars. Some where for Father’s Day presents, Birthday Presents, Proud Parents, Fans, and the Drivers Themselves. Hope you guys like these.1 point -

I ordered some clocks from them about 6-8 years ago.. they took a very long time to get here... While they were good clocks and I didn't really have any issues with them.. The slow shipping is why i never ordered from them again.. at the time I ordered.. I didn't know they was from Canada.. until I looked at my packing slip when my package arrived.. then it was like.. OH.. that's why it took so long..1 point

I get it. I had to ask though. Family is the best reason. We wanted to live close to our son in Colo.Sprgs. but we couldn't find an area in the town that we liked that was affordable and it snows there too. So, he and his family will have to come here to visit.1 point
